  1. Became the first New York met to throw a no-hitter. the downfall about that was his career went downhill after that no-no.

  2. On August 19, 2007 — Johan Santana also sets a team strikeout record, this one for a single game, when he fans 17, two more than the old Minnesota Twins record. Santana throws two-hit ball and walks none in a 8-inning gem to beat Kevin Millwood, 1 – 0, in a pitcher's duel. Michael Cuddyer provides the game's lone run with his 12th homer of the season. Michael Young, the All-Star shortstop, leads the K crowd by striking out all four times against Santana.

  3. He just had to throw his 94-mile fastball and after, his devastating change-up, he showed that you didn't have to have crazy pitches in your repertoire, just a change of speed could make batters lunatic. Obviously he threw the changeup and the fastball in the same way, there was no way to know when the pitches were coming.

  4. Santana went 8 innings, 2 hits, no runs, no walks, no HBP, no catcher interference, no errors, 17K , 112 pitches. So 2 Rangers got on base. Twins won the game, 1-0.

Twins made one error, but that was Joe Nathan who made it.

Kinda surprising that Santana had 112 pitches after 8 innings, considering only 2 Rangers reached base.

Both Rangers hits were by Sammy Sosa. 🙂

I think the reason why the Twins manager pulled Johan after 8 innings was because Johan already threw 112 pitches AND it was a 1-0 game, so he wanted to make sure that Johan left the game on a positive note with no possible self-destruction in the 9th inning.

And also, the Twins closer was Joe Nathan (who was pretty much a sensational closer in his career).

Kevin Millwood also pitched nicely for the Rangers (7 innings, one run, which was a home run by Michael Cuddyer). But Millwood did have 5 walks and 4 hits also, so alot of baserunners. Millwood only threw 98 pitches despite having all those baserunners.

Also, earlier in this 2007 season, Johan faced the Rangers again (in Texas), and he went 7 innings, one run, 13 strikeouts.

  5. Some fun facts about this game:

Rangers had two hits this game; both by Sammy Sosa. 🙂

Sosa was part of rookie Kerry Wood 20 strikeout game in 1998 against the Astros

Twins were honoring the 1987 Twins this series, which was when the Twins won their first of two World Series titles.

Twins also inducted Gary Gaetti into the Twins Hall of Fame during pregame ceremony

  6. Coming back to watch this after Pablo Lopez threw 7 scoreless last night in the playoffs against the Astros. I remember how fun it was to watch Johan pitch. He was something special. It was great to see a Twins pitcher with another gem of a game in a playoff series!

  7. he was the best pitcher from 2006-2010, bartolo colon robbed him a clear cy young in 2005. He was really dominant pitcher with "velo-changer" style. His fastball-change up combo was lethal, both pitch looks the same but with different speed that destroyed hitters, that was the reason he was 3 times leader of K. For me he is a hall of famer.

  8. Dam that fastball was more powerfull then 93 mph power fastball for sure
