And this bizarre image<br \/>\nis proof that if you’re ever there at night, it’s<br \/>\nbest to bring a camera. TONY HARRIS (VOICEOVER):<br \/>\nDeer Lodge, Montana– October 2018. Don Bromley is working a ranch<br \/>\nequipped with more than 100 motion control trail cams<br \/>\nto spot predators and catch potential trespassers. One morning, Don checks<br \/>\nthe cameras and realizes, they’d caught a trespasser<br \/>\nunlike any he’d ever seen. DON BROMLEY: It<br \/>\nwas one of those– just an eerie feeling<br \/>\nI had looking at it. It had the two legs, but<br \/>\nit didn’t look right. You could see the head was<br \/>\ntoo big and a little off. Really made you guess<br \/>\nand question what it was. TONY HARRIS (VOICEOVER):<br \/>\nNow, take a closer look, especially that bulbous head. Does that look human to you? Don doubts it. The camera was miles away from<br \/>\nany sort of road or trail, so he went back to conduct<br \/>\na photo experiment. DON BROMLEY: I found the exact<br \/>\nspot where that being was and where I was and<br \/>\nput them side by side. And I’m glad I did it because<br \/>\nthat one really hits it home. It really shows what a<br \/>\nperson should look like, and then there’s no<br \/>\nexplanation for the other one. TONY HARRIS (VOICEOVER): So<br \/>\nwhat are we looking at here? A Bigfoot? CLIFF BARACKMAN: Montana has<br \/>\na rich history of cryptids, in general, Sasquatches<br \/>\nbeing number one on the list because it is excellent habitat. They are there. TONY HARRIS (VOICEOVER):<br \/>\nMontana was also a hotspot for UFO activity. CHASE KLLOETZE: There’s cattle<br \/>\nmutilations, horse mutilations. There’s just a lot<br \/>\nof activity that is unexplained to this day. TONY HARRIS (VOICEOVER):<br \/>\nIn fact, in 1950, Montana was where it’s<br \/>\nbelieved a man named Nick Marianas made UFO history. CHASE KLLOETZE: He<br \/>\nsees two shiny objects moving through the sky. He gets the 16 millimeter<br \/>\ncamera and films this. As far as we know, this is the<br \/>\nfirst UFO captured on film. So did Don’s camera captures<br \/>\nsomething equally momentous– a Bigfoot, an extraterrestrial,<br \/>\nor something entirely new? We sent Don’s photo<br \/>\nto our experts, starting with our<br \/>\ntrusty forensic image analyst Michael Primeau. TONY HARRIS (VOICEOVER):<br \/>\nThe first question is whether or not Don<br \/>\naltered this picture. MICHAEL PRIMEAU: We<br \/>\nperformed, essentially, an X-ray of the<br \/>\nimage that provides any kind of distinction<br \/>\nbetween something that’s been copied and<br \/>\npasted onto a picture. But I didn’t detect any alerts<br \/>\nfrom my image authentication software to notify<br \/>\nme that there were any kind of inconsistencies<br \/>\nwith the image. This is a camera original. TONY HARRIS<br \/>\n(VOICEOVER): OK, we know it’s not a fake photograph. So then, could it be<br \/>\nthe famous Bigfoot? We take the photo to<br \/>\nanthropologist Kathy Strain. KATHY STRAIN: Obviously,<br \/>\nit’s not an animal. So this is something<br \/>\nthat’s walking upright. It’s clearly bipedal–<br \/>\nit’s not on all fours– and there’s not a whole lot<br \/>\nof cryptids that are bipedal. Bigfoot walks on two legs. TONY HARRIS<br \/>\n(VOICEOVER): But that may be where the<br \/>\nsimilarities to Bigfoot end. KATHY STRAIN: Doesn’t seem to<br \/>\nbe heavyset, wide-shouldered. It’s clearly not hair covered. It doesn’t appear to be<br \/>\nthat much difference in size than Don himself, so it<br \/>\ndoesn’t make any sense for that to be a Bigfoot. TONY HARRIS (VOICEOVER):<br \/>\nSo if it’s not a Bigfoot, could it be something<br \/>\nelse inhuman? KATHY STRAIN: Your<br \/>\ninitial thought is, wow, is that an alien? Is that what we’re looking at? But if you look at<br \/>\nit more closely, you can see that, to me, anyway,<br \/>\nthat he’s wearing a hoodie, and that’s why his head<br \/>\nlooks so funny shaped. And he’s not wearing<br \/>\na backpack, but it’s clearly a trespasser, to me,<br \/>\ngoing through the property. I use game cameras a lot<br \/>\nbecause we put them out at archaeological sites to catch<br \/>\nlooters, and based on that, it has all the elements of<br \/>\njust an overexposed photo. And it’s a malfunction,<br \/>\nI think, of the camera. Like, this is an<br \/>\noverexposed mountain lion. You can tell it’s a<br \/>\ncat, but you’re not going to get much<br \/>\nelse out of that because it’s so over-flashed<br \/>\nthat you can’t get any details. In this other photo, because<br \/>\nit looks like a human, I’m going to conclude<br \/>\nthat it’s a human. So we can say<br \/>\nthat the photo is authentic, despite the<br \/>\nsuspicious blurring around the distorted head. See that right there? But Kathy Strain’s cat<br \/>\npicture convinces me. For now, at least, our<br \/>\nverdict is blurred human. One note, though– Don says<br \/>\nnone of his other cameras recorded any trespassers,<br \/>\nso that bit of the mystery is still lingering. TONY HARRIS (VOICEOVER):<br \/>\nIn October 2017, a man is about to step into<br \/>\nhis sister’s bathroom in Alor Satar, Malaysia, when<br \/>\nhe notices something crawling out of the toilet. The 28-year-old<br \/>\nimmediately rushes out to tell his sister, who<br \/>\nwhips out her camera and captures this video. WITNESS: [non-english speech] TONY HARRIS<br \/>\n(VOICEOVER): The footage shows a strange,<br \/>\nslithering creature emerging from the<br \/>\nbathroom with its head poking out of the door. It surveys its surroundings<br \/>\nbefore finally crawling out onto the tiled floor. Let’s take another look. The creature appears to be about<br \/>\n6 feet long with a small head, thick body, and a short tail. Field researcher Ken<br \/>\nGerhard has studied river monsters, lake monsters,<br \/>\nand, now, sewer monsters. It’s large. It’s slimy and black. It’s crawling out of a toilet. That’s about as bad as it gets. People don’t generally spend<br \/>\na lot of time, if any time, in a sewer, so we<br \/>\nreally don’t have any idea of what types of creepy<br \/>\ncrawlies might be down there. TONY HARRIS (VOICEOVER):<br \/>\nGerhard says, the most persistent<br \/>\nurban legend involves the sewers of the Big Apple. KEN GERHARD: There are<br \/>\naccounts and rumors going back to the 1930s that describe<br \/>\nsizable alligators actually living and breeding in<br \/>\nthe New York sewer system. There is one theory<br \/>\nthat, perhaps, these were pets that were somehow<br \/>\ndiscarded and flushed down the toilet when they<br \/>\nwere small and then grew to massive sizes in the sewer. TONY HARRIS (VOICEOVER):<br \/>\nOf course, not all sewer animals are monsters. Sometimes, animals just get<br \/>\nstuck in the sewers, trapped by size or circumstance. And everything from giant<br \/>\nrats, feral cats, even cows have been found in sewer<br \/>\nsystems around the world. And Marine biologist<br \/>\nDr. Shea Conger says, in Southeast Asia, giant<br \/>\nsnakes turn up down there, too. SHEA CONGER: It’s a really<br \/>\ntropical, forested environment. In fact, it’s been<br \/>\nknown that there have been snakes<br \/>\nthat have emerged from toilets or plumbing. TONY HARRIS (VOICEOVER):<br \/>\nIn fact, in 2019, this 14-foot Cobra was found<br \/>\nin a sewer in Thailand. Sewer creatures have been<br \/>\nmaking headlines for decades, but it is rare to<br \/>\nencounter anything this big and this disturbing. So could this be a giant<br \/>\nsnake or maybe just some form of camera trickery? Let’s go to our video expert. MICHAEL PRIMEAU:<br \/>\nThis recording has been compressed pretty heavily. So in layman’s terms, it’s<br \/>\ntoo blurry to see anything, to be able to identify<br \/>\nexactly what we’re seeing. However, in terms<br \/>\nof authenticity of the way that the<br \/>\nrecording is playing and the way that the camera<br \/>\noperator is capturing this object, I don’t see<br \/>\nanything to suggest it’s been CGI’d or Photoshopped. TONY HARRIS (VOICEOVER):<br \/>\nSo if the video is real, is this thing a snake? Dr. Conger says we<br \/>\nneed to consider other slimy creatures<br \/>\nknown to slither across this part of the world. SHEA CONGER: Malaysia is home<br \/>\nto amphibians that we call caecillians, and these are<br \/>\nsalamander-like animals that don’t have limbs or any<br \/>\nexternal appendages, so they look a bit<br \/>\nlike giant worms. These animals can actually<br \/>\nget 5 to 6 feet long, but what you have, in<br \/>\nessence, is an animal that’s only a few inches in diameter. And so my idea that this could<br \/>\nbe some sort of caecillian goes out the window. TONY HARRIS (VOICEOVER):<br \/>\nConger has another thought that’s even grosser. SHEA CONGER: Malaysia is pretty<br \/>\nwell known for its leeches, which are blood-sucking<br \/>\ninvertebrates, but if this were a leech, it<br \/>\nwould have to be 30 or 40 times bigger than a known species<br \/>\nof leech, which I think is really unlikely. TONY HARRIS (VOICEOVER):<br \/>\nProfessor Floyd Hayes, who has been fascinated<br \/>\nwith snakes since childhood, is pretty sure he knows<br \/>\nwhat we’re looking at, and it’s not some sort<br \/>\nof mythical serpent. There are quite a<br \/>\nfew different species of snakes in Malaysia. This one appears to<br \/>\nbe very thick bodied, and there’s not<br \/>\nthat many species that would look like this. It looks a lot like an<br \/>\nelephant trunk snake. TONY HARRIS (VOICEOVER): Hayes<br \/>\nsays that the baggy skin, which gives the impression that<br \/>\nit’s too big for the animal, is the telltale sign. So our verdict? Based on its known<br \/>\nhabitat and size, we think the sewer monster<br \/>\nis an elephant trunk snake. And while they usually<br \/>\nmake their homes near rivers and lagoons, this<br \/>\none chose a toilet, instead. No accounting for taste. TONY HARRIS<br \/>\n(VOICEOVER): May 2020. It’s nightfall in<br \/>\nSaskatchewan, Canada. In the pitch black<br \/>\ndarkness, there’s something amiss in the yard<br \/>\nacross from this driveway. WITNESS: The heck was that? TONY HARRIS (VOICEOVER): Let’s<br \/>\npush in and slow this down. Something’s hiding<br \/>\nbehind that rock. But every once in a while,<br \/>\nit peeks its head out and then goes back really fast, then<br \/>\npeaks its head out again and goes back really fast. And then, they<br \/>\nturn the flashlight off, wait a few<br \/>\nmoments, and turn it on, and, poof, there it is. The shadow, if nothing else,<br \/>\nshows you that this thing really is there. TONY HARRIS (VOICEOVER):<br \/>\nNumerous comments on the internet suggest the<br \/>\nfigure might be evidence of the small creatures<br \/>\nknown as the Mannegishi in Native American lore. Legend has it, they are<br \/>\nhairy, six-fingered goblins without noses who capsize canoes<br \/>\nand steal when disrespected. They are mischievous. They are out to get you. You want to keep your distance. TONY HARRIS (VOICEOVER):<br \/>\nAnd according to folklore, these Canadian creatures<br \/>\nalso want to avoid being seen as best they can. Is this night somehow<br \/>\nthe exception? What we do know is that the<br \/>\nvideo isn’t easy to evaluate, as the creature comes<br \/>\nin and out of the light, but I’ll tell you this, though. When I froze on this<br \/>\nframe, I thought I saw what looked like a stick<br \/>\nfor manipulating a puppet. Let’s see what the<br \/>\nexperts have to say. [music playing] TONY HARRIS (VOICEOVER):<br \/>\nTo authenticate the footage, we return<br \/>\nto forensic video analyst Michael Primeau. MICHAEL PRIMEAU: It’s spooky. This is definitely<br \/>\na recording that I have a hard time explaining. When you watch the<br \/>\nvideo, the movement appears to be consistent<br \/>\nwith what I would expect to see from<br \/>\na recording that was created in this environment. TONY HARRIS (VOICEOVER): Primeau<br \/>\ndoesn’t believe the video has been manipulated or altered. So, then, could it<br \/>\nbe a nocturnal animal like, a raccoon or a possum? We return to our wildlife<br \/>\nbiologist Lucy Eckersley. LUCY ECKERSLEY: This<br \/>\nlooks like something bipedal, that walks<br \/>\non its back legs and can utilize its front limbs. So from what I can<br \/>\nsee, I think that this is a humanoid creature<br \/>\nbetween 3 and 4 foot tall. TONY HARRIS (VOICEOVER): And she<br \/>\nthinks it’s not just humanoid. It’s a human, a<br \/>\nyounger specimen. From everything<br \/>\nI’ve seen here, I think that it’s most likely<br \/>\nchildren having a bit of fun. TONY HARRIS (VOICEOVER):<br \/>\nAnthropologist Kathy Strain disagrees. I have never quite<br \/>\nseen anything like it. TONY HARRIS (VOICEOVER): Strain,<br \/>\nwho’s well read in legends of the Mannegishi, says you can<br \/>\ntell by the nearby dog house that the creature is not large. Must be nocturnal because<br \/>\nits eyes are adapted to seeing things at night. It was standing out in the<br \/>\nopen, looking towards them when the flashlight was off. TONY HARRIS (VOICEOVER): The<br \/>\nsize, eyesight, and behavior match the Mannegishi. Strain says this video<br \/>\nmay be proof they’re real. KATHY STRAIN: I think<br \/>\nwhat we’re seeing is a real animal<br \/>\nthat is represented in those traditional stories. So neither Lucy<br \/>\nEckersley nor Kathy Strain thought it was a puppet. And based on its compact size<br \/>\nand ability to stand upright, we’ll say it’s likely<br \/>\na little humanoid, but whether it’s a<br \/>\nlegendary Mannegishi or just a little human,<br \/>\nwe’ll let you decide. TONY HARRIS<br \/>\n(VOICEOVER): April 2021. Cristina Ryan is asleep in her<br \/>\nhome in Palm Beach, Florida. But while her eyes<br \/>\nare shut, her home security camera is<br \/>\nwide awake, and it captures this wild footage. The video, just<br \/>\nfour seconds long, shows an animal running<br \/>\nacross the front yard in the dead of night. Let’s slow it down<br \/>\nand take another look. It’s hard to tell<br \/>\nexactly what this is, but there is no doubt<br \/>\nin Cristina’s mind about what her camera recorded. My immediate thought<br \/>\nis it’s a raptor or some type of a dinosaur,<br \/>\nthe way that it’s running. And just the entire shape and<br \/>\neverything indicated to me dinosaur. TONY HARRIS (VOICEOVER): Field<br \/>\nresearcher Ken Gerhard agrees. The blurry but<br \/>\nextremely intriguing clip screams<br \/>\nVelociraptor to him, too. It appears to have kind of a<br \/>\nlong and powerful, sturdy tail. This is kind of<br \/>\nthe classic image of a small, bipedal<br \/>\ntheropod-type of dinosaur. TONY HARRIS (VOICEOVER):<br \/>\nAs crazy as it may seem, Gerhard shares that there<br \/>\nare many modern day accounts of living dinosaurs, just<br \/>\nlike Cristina Ryan’s, right here in the US of A. In Southwest Colorado, there<br \/>\nhave been many sightings, and they’re referred to as river<br \/>\ndinosaurs or river lizards. These are, basically,<br \/>\nsmaller types of theropod-like<br \/>\ndinosaurs, just like we’re seeing in the Florida video. There are also<br \/>\ntraditions in Southwest Texas of tall, bipedal lizards<br \/>\ncalled Mountain Boomers– larger versions of a<br \/>\nknown smaller species. These sightings are<br \/>\nfleeting, but they do happen. So is it that crazy to<br \/>\nthink that other dinosaur species could be alive<br \/>\nand well in Florida? Let’s ask our experts. MICHAEL PRIMEAU: Because it’s<br \/>\nmoving at a high rate of speed and the encoder is not set<br \/>\nto capture that information with a high quality,<br \/>\nit’s essentially blurring and<br \/>\nelongating some of that with motion trail<br \/>\ncompression artifacting. The pixel information<br \/>\nthat was captured was not captured with accuracy. TONY HARRIS<br \/>\n(VOICEOVER): So Primeau says the footage<br \/>\nhasn’t been altered, but it still may be<br \/>\ndistorted in the camera. The tale of this creature<br \/>\nmay not be what it seems. So we brought in our resident<br \/>\nzoologist, Foxy Furman, who reminds us<br \/>\nwhere this happened, and why that may be a clue. ROXY FURMAN: Florida is famous<br \/>\nfor its exotic pet trade, and also, they obviously<br \/>\nhave gators in the region. The way it moves<br \/>\ncould be reptile-like. It moves kind of side to side<br \/>\nin this waddle-like manner, but its body pattern has<br \/>\nno indication of scales or any different coloration<br \/>\nor variation along the back. So to me, that kind of rules<br \/>\nout any kind of reptile. TONY HARRIS<br \/>\n(VOICEOVER): That would eliminate giant prehistoric<br \/>\nreptiles, like raptors, too. So if it isn’t a<br \/>\ndinosaur, then what is it? What I think is most likely<br \/>\nis a dog that’s got loose. You can see the tail<br \/>\nrunning behind it. TONY HARRIS (VOICEOVER):<br \/>\nThe tail looks like a lizard’s due to<br \/>\nthe picture distortion Primeau identified. ROXY FURMAN: And it also looks<br \/>\nlike there’s something kind of dragging, like a<br \/>\nleash, and that would also explain kind of this<br \/>\nwhite area that we see around the head,<br \/>\nwhich would most likely be a reflective collar. And it’s just kind of running<br \/>\nthrough someone’s garden. So our verdict? This is just a dog on the<br \/>\nloose, not a runaway raptor. But again, thanks to<br \/>\nFlorida’s laid back exotic pet regulations,<br \/>\ngigantic lizards have gotten free in the Sunshine State. We’ve brought you stories<br \/>\nof strange creatures suspected of being<br \/>\nalien corpses before. They’ve turned up in Charleston,<br \/>\nSouth Carolina, Russia’s Alma region,<br \/>\nand elsewhere. So when we saw evidence<br \/>\nof another mysterious case, this time from Down Under, we felt it was<br \/>\nour duty to investigate. March 2nd, 2022. It’s morning in the suburb<br \/>\n of Marrickville, just outside Sydney, Australia. After days<br \/>\n of intense rainstorms, a jogger is enjoying a break<br \/>\n in the weather to take a run, when something unusual<br \/>\n on the ground suddenly catches his eye. It appears to be<br \/>\n an oval-shaped creature, perhaps two inches long. Take a closer look. Is that an eye? And a tail? Whatever it is, it not only<br \/>\n surprised the jogger, but researcher<br \/>\n Ken Gerhard as well. [Gerhard]<br \/>\n I don’t see any scales. I certainly don’t see any hair. It almost kind of has<br \/>\na gelatinous look to it. It’s kind of slimy, kind of pale, gray or silver. [narrator] In fact,<br \/>\n as far-fetched as it seems, the gray nature and fetal form<br \/>\n of this creature has some<br \/>\n on social media theorizing this could be remains of<br \/>\n a developing alien life form. Perhaps the last time<br \/>\nan alleged alien baby made news headlines<br \/>\nwas in 1996, in the Ural mountains of Russia. Referred to as<br \/>\n the Kyshtym Dwarf, there was a strange<br \/>\n humanoid creature that was found<br \/>\n by a local woman. It was only<br \/>\n about ten inches long. To this day,<br \/>\n many of the villagers in this particular region<br \/>\n still wonder whether it was in fact<br \/>\nsome type of alien creature. [narrator] We analyzed<br \/>\n the Kyshtym footage in an earlier episode, and now, with this<br \/>\n strange life form, could there be a link between<br \/>\n these mysterious creatures appearing around the world? In 1961, astronomer<br \/>\nand physicist Frank Drake proposed what’s been called<br \/>\nthe Drake Equation as a way to come up with<br \/>\na mathematical formula to estimate how many other alien<br \/>\ncivilizations are out there. Looking at this, I don’t think<br \/>\nthere’s any question that it appears to be some<br \/>\nsort of early stage life form, but what? And is it alien? Let’s ask the experts. We begin with marine biologist<br \/>\n Dr. Shea Conger. [Conger] People might think<br \/>\n this looks a bit alien, because it’s kind of gray. It doesn’t look like<br \/>\nit has skin or scales. But I don’t think<br \/>\n that’s what we’re seeing here. It looks like it almost<br \/>\n might be something like a squid or octopus. [narrator] Okay,<br \/>\n so Dr. Conger thinks we’ve got an earthly<br \/>\n organism here. But wait a minute.<br \/>\n Why would a fetal squid or octopus be on the road? It could be a phenomenon<br \/>\n called “animal rain.” These animal rains tend to<br \/>\nhappen in coastal environments where there’s<br \/>\n a lot of dynamic weather. [narrator] How would<br \/>\n that be possible? We take that question to<br \/>\n meteorologist Juan Hernandez. The weather conditions<br \/>\nacross Australia were very rare<br \/>\n for this time of the year. That led to above<br \/>\n normal rainfall, in addition to tropical<br \/>\n cyclones across the region. [narrator] Hernandez explains<br \/>\n that the severe weather could have led to a cyclone<br \/>\n effect known as a waterspout. [Hernandez] The updraft<br \/>\n speeds of waterspouts oftentimes exceeds<br \/>\n 20 miles an hour. Given the radar data<br \/>\nthat we have from that day in Sydney, it is possible that this<br \/>\norganism was picked up and deposited somewhere else<br \/>\ndue to waterspouts. But another<br \/>\nexplanation is birds. Birds come have around, picked up the animal<br \/>\n from the water, and as they’re flying, dropped<br \/>\n the animal somewhere else. But since there’s no obvious<br \/>\n injury to this creature, it more than likely did not come<br \/>\nfrom a high distance in the sky. [narrator] And,<br \/>\n on closer examination, Conger makes<br \/>\n an important discovery. She believes whatever this is, it didn’t come from the ocean. I can tell that this<br \/>\nlong tail-like appendage is actually likely<br \/>\n an embryonic notochord. The notochord is<br \/>\n the predecessor to the spine. We all have this in the womb. In addition, these kind of<br \/>\nridges that we see here to me look<br \/>\n a lot like gill slits, and that’s another interesting<br \/>\n aspect of mammal evolution. Mammals in the womb,<br \/>\n as embryos, actually have gill slits as a remnant of our history<br \/>\n beginning as aquatic fish. So I think this is actually<br \/>\na terrestrial organism. It’s just in a very early<br \/>\nstage of development. If I had to guess, I would say this is probably<br \/>\n a marsupial embryo. Maybe something like a possum. Especially because<br \/>\n this is in Australia, which really is<br \/>\n the land of marsupials. Marsupials don’t develop<br \/>\n fully in the womb. At some point, they actually<br \/>\nmigrate from the womb to the maternal pouch<br \/>\n of the mother and continue development there. So it’s biologically possible that something<br \/>\n could have gone wrong during the early development<br \/>\nof this animal. So instead of ending up in the marsupial pouch,<br \/>\nfor example, it ended up in<br \/>\nan unnatural environment. [narrator] But how<br \/>\n did it get here? Hernandez may discount<br \/>\n the animal rain theory, but he still believes<br \/>\n Mother Nature played a role. The atypical weather conditions<br \/>\nthat we saw around Sydney contributed to significant<br \/>\n flash flooding, and it’s possible<br \/>\n that this particular organism lived somewhere<br \/>\n far away from Sydney and was deposited in the Sydney<br \/>\narea due to flash flooding. Our verdict? We’re going<br \/>\nwith a possum embryo. It seems to us both Hernandez<br \/>\nand Conger’s takes on what it is<br \/>\nand how it got there add up. And unfortunately,<br \/>\ndue to climate change, it also seems<br \/>\nthat Australia will see more and more<br \/>\nintense weather events like the one that likely washed<br \/>\nthis creature into the streets. 2021, in<br \/>\n an indiscernible location, an anonymous TikTok user<br \/>\n is sweeping up a tiled floor when he comes across<br \/>\n something unusual. A broomstick prods at an amorphous transparent<br \/>\n blob on the ground. It seems to slide<br \/>\n across the floor with little to no resistance, fluid and dappled,<br \/>\n like the surface of a puddle. It’s pretty weird.<br \/>\nI mean, anybody finding something<br \/>\nlike this in their kitchen would be pretty freaked out. [narrator] Field researcher<br \/>\n Ken Gerhard points out there might be truth<br \/>\n behind the famous Blob so ingrained in pop culture. The iconic sci-fi movie<br \/>\n The Blob was actually based<br \/>\non a real incident that occurred back in 1950. Four Philadelphia police<br \/>\n officers encountered this weird Blob-like creature that was about six feet<br \/>\nin diameter, about a foot thick, and it appeared to be alive. And I’m wondering if this<br \/>\ncould be somehow related to this weird thing that we’re<br \/>\nseeing on this kitchen floor. [narrator] Or perhaps<br \/>\n this strange anomaly is another, more<br \/>\n mythical substance. Star jelly is a clear<br \/>\ngelatinous goo that has been found<br \/>\n on grass and plants, and according<br \/>\n to some mythology, it’s deposited on Earth<br \/>\n following meteor showers. Typically this star jelly<br \/>\nsubstance just disintegrates and leaves behind<br \/>\n no trace or residue. [narrator] Even if this<br \/>\n gooey figure is in no way related to star jelly, Gerhard thinks<br \/>\n we might be looking at something extraterrestrial<br \/>\n in nature. [Gerhard] Some alien<br \/>\n theorists think that if we do find life<br \/>\n elsewhere in the universe, it would not have<br \/>\n evolved on our planet, so it might not even<br \/>\nbe carbon-based like we are. It could be<br \/>\n made out of silicone or some other substance. There’s a strong chance<br \/>\nthat it’s gonna look more like this as opposed to anything that we<br \/>\nknow of from the fossil record. Some scientists believe<br \/>\nthe first aliens we encounter will be simpler life forms<br \/>\nor microorganisms. That’s because of a discovery<br \/>\nof some bacteria here on Earth that can survive in acidic lakes or boiling hot springs<br \/>\nlike this one in Yellowstone Park. These so-called<br \/>\nextremophile organisms might be found on planets with harsher<br \/>\nenvironments than Earth, but was one found<br \/>\non this kitchen floor? Let’s ask the experts. First, video analyst<br \/>\n Mick West examines whether this footage<br \/>\n could have been faked. If we zoom in on bits of this, we can see these<br \/>\nkind of ridges in the object. And when it goes over lines<br \/>\nlike it does here, you can see it’s actually<br \/>\nrefracting the light and causing<br \/>\nthese lines to break up, and we see it interacting<br \/>\nwith the environment. Like right here, we see it<br \/>\ngo up against these pipes. Uh, there’s a little wave<br \/>\nwhere it goes over the pipes. I think this is actually a real<br \/>\nobject that we’re looking at. [narrator] Next, West points out<br \/>\n that the substance star jelly may be less mythical<br \/>\n than it seems. One of the explanations<br \/>\nfor star jelly is that it’s, uh, animals vomiting frog spawn. They eat the jelly<br \/>\nwith the frog eggs in it, they partially digest it,<br \/>\nand then they throw it up again. [narrator] Birds,<br \/>\n presumably, eat frogs. The mucus jelly expands<br \/>\n in the bird’s stomach in contact with water, and the bird vomits it up. But in this case, he’s not sure the star jelly theory<br \/>\n holds together. [West] Star jelly typically<br \/>\n falls apart when you pick it up, and this holds<br \/>\ntogether very well when he’s pushing it<br \/>\naround with the broom, so I don’t think<br \/>\n it’s star jelly. [narrator] Next,<br \/>\n marine biologist Shea Conger considers the alien theory. She agrees<br \/>\n the first aliens we meet might be simpler life forms. But she thinks that would mean<br \/>\n us going to them, not them coming to us. The technology needed<br \/>\nto travel to Earth from millions<br \/>\nof light years away would be incredibly complex. I don’t see any evidence<br \/>\nof anything like a complex brain or central nervous system so the idea that<br \/>\nthis is some kind of advanced extraterrestrial<br \/>\nlife is pretty unlikely. It would probably be<br \/>\na little more technologically and anatomically defined. [narrator] We don’t know<br \/>\n where it happened, but Conger thinks there’s a<br \/>\n clue to that and what this is. [Conger] This object looks like<br \/>\n a lot of decaying jellyfish that I’ve seen on the shore. And what we’re seeing here is part of the natural<br \/>\n decomposition process when a marine<br \/>\n invertebrate ends up in a dry environment<br \/>\n like the beach. It’s possible<br \/>\nthere could have been some sort of high tide<br \/>\nor a flood and this animal ended up<br \/>\nin these people’s house. But either way, it somehow<br \/>\nmade its way from the ocean into a populated area. Our verdict?<br \/>\nThis is a jellyfish. A dead one who’s in<br \/>\nthe process of decomposing. How it made its way<br \/>\nto this person’s kitchen is anyone’s guess. It’s March 21st, 2022. Maroochydore Beach, 60 miles<br \/>\n outside of Brisbane Australia, Alex Tan is strolling<br \/>\n along the coast when he stumbles across<br \/>\n something unusual. He takes out his camera<br \/>\n and records this. I honestly don’t know<br \/>\nwhat it is. [narrator]<br \/>\n An odd-looking creature, which appears to be deceased,<br \/>\n lying in the sand. Let’s take a closer look. It sure doesn’t look<br \/>\n like it came from the sea. More like something<br \/>\n out of an H.G. Wells novel with its dog-like body<br \/>\n and rodent-like head. So I’m trying<br \/>\nto figure out what it was, and it had the color of,<br \/>\nyou know, like a chicken nugget. It was just weird.<br \/>\n It really just threw me off. I was just so fascinated<br \/>\nat what I had found. [narrator] Author and journalist<br \/>\n Erin McCarthy says when the video went viral, thousands of social media users suggested this<br \/>\n could be a Bunyip. Sure, it could,<br \/>\n but what’s a bunyip? A bunyip, which is<br \/>\nactually a creature from indigenous<br \/>\n Australian folklore that, it’s said,<br \/>\n loves to eat people, specifically women and children. It’s a creature that lives<br \/>\n in waterholes, lakes, and rivers around Australia. It’s been said<br \/>\n to look like a seal or sometimes a swimming dog. The word “bunyip” actually<br \/>\n first appeared in print in the 1840s when some discovered fossils that were theorized<br \/>\n to be a bunyip. There was actually what was<br \/>\n said to be a bunyip skull displayed in the Australian<br \/>\nMuseum in Sydney for a couple of days<br \/>\nin the 1840s. [narrator] McCarthy also wonders if this creature’s odd<br \/>\n appearance could be explained by some sort of mutation<br \/>\n caused by nuclear testing. Some have actually speculated<br \/>\nthat this creature is a mutated wallaby. Between the early 1950s<br \/>\n and the early 1960s, the British government<br \/>\n performed nuclear tests at three sites<br \/>\n across Australia: Emu Island, Maralinga,<br \/>\nand the Montebello Islands. There were 12 major tests<br \/>\n performed at these sites, and some of the weapons<br \/>\n that were detonated were actually as big as the bombs used<br \/>\n during Hiroshima. Those particles have caused<br \/>\n a lot of problems for the wildlife<br \/>\nthat live in those areas. [narrator] One other thought. There’s also<br \/>\n a biosecurity sciences lab located in nearby Brisbane. Could this thing<br \/>\n have been the subject of some secret<br \/>\n medical experiment and somehow gotten loose? This show is no stranger<br \/>\nto odd beach carcasses. One of our first segments<br \/>\nfocused on this strange creature found in South Carolina. Some said it had escaped from<br \/>\na nearby off-limits island where thousands of monkeys<br \/>\nare bred for research. Could something similar<br \/>\nhave happened here? Or perhaps this is<br \/>\nthe legendary bunyip, or some new<br \/>\nundiscovered species from Australia’s vast Outback. Let’s let our experts see<br \/>\nwhat’s up Down Under. We begin with forensic video<br \/>\n analyst Michael Primeau to see if this video<br \/>\n could have been altered. We were able to confirm<br \/>\nthat these four recordings came from an Apple iPhone. There were no programs that<br \/>\n interacted with these files and changed the evidence<br \/>\nin any way digitally. [narrator] If the video<br \/>\n hasn’t been altered, what could we be seeing? We turn to marine biologist<br \/>\n Dr. Shea Conger to test the popular online<br \/>\n theory that this is a bunyip. It looks like a mammal to me, but there’s not<br \/>\na lot of definable features. The bunyip is said to be<br \/>\n kind of an aquatic animal, and what I see here looks to be a really typical<br \/>\n quadrupedal animal. So I think because of this fact, it’s very unlikely to say<br \/>\nthat this is a bunyip. [narrator] But if it’s not<br \/>\n a bunyip, what could it be? Wildlife biologist<br \/>\n Stephanie Schuttler takes a look to see<br \/>\n if this could be the result of radioactive<br \/>\n experiments in the area. Radiation can damage DNA cells, and any time there is damage to<br \/>\nDNA during replication process, this creates mutations. Usually from radiation, the DNA<br \/>\n makes mistakes in replication and keeps replicating cells,<br \/>\nand they’re tumor cells. [narrator]<br \/>\n Damage caused by radiation, like in the Chernobyl disaster, usually leads to side effects like cancer<br \/>\n or radiation sickness, which can cause hair loss. Schuttler has<br \/>\n another theory that explains why this creature is hairless. You can tell the tide<br \/>\nis going down, so it’s very likely<br \/>\n that this creature has been in the water for a long time,<br \/>\n in the ocean. And when they’re exposed<br \/>\nto the ocean water and the sun’s rays, it can cause the fur<br \/>\n to come off as part of<br \/>\nthe decomposition process. [narrator] So what about<br \/>\n the wallaby theory, a creature known to be<br \/>\n widespread Down Under? Wallabies are very<br \/>\nsimilar to kangaroos, but I don’t see evidence<br \/>\n that it’s a wallaby. If it were a wallaby, you would have<br \/>\n more powerful hind legs. They would be longer<br \/>\n in comparison to the forearms. And in this case, they seem<br \/>\nto be pretty equal. It looks more like an animal<br \/>\nthat walks on all fours, rather than hops<br \/>\n like a wallaby would. [narrator]<br \/>\n If it’s not a wallaby, what are we looking at here? Australia has lots<br \/>\nof possum species. I think it’s<br \/>\n the brushtail possum. The limbs are<br \/>\n similar in length. Opossums have naked tails. They don’t really have<br \/>\n any fur on their tails. Our verdict?<br \/>\nThis is a brushtail possum in the stages of decomposition. It’s missing its hair<br \/>\nbecause it’s been in the ocean. June 29th, 2017. On Yale Lake<br \/>\n in southwest Washington, two men take their kayaks out<br \/>\n for a relaxing afternoon when the calm waters<br \/>\n are suddenly disturbed. [man] Weird [bleep]. [narrator] The video seems<br \/>\n to show bubbles rising to the surface of the water<br \/>\n in the center of the lake as the kayakers<br \/>\n paddle towards them. [man] Just bubbles coming from<br \/>\nthe bottom of the lake. No current. [man 2] I’m afraid to put<br \/>\nmy hand in the water. [narrator] One kayaker dips his<br \/>\n camera below the water line, and we see debris and thousands<br \/>\n of bubbles swirling. [man] Something weird,<br \/>\nthough, dude. [narrator]<br \/>\n The bubbling is so intense, the other kayaker panics<br \/>\n and paddles off. [man] Go, go, go! [narrator] Then an ominous burst<br \/>\n of murky brown water erupts, as hundreds of leaves are<br \/>\n belched up to the surface. [man] What the [bleep]? What the [bleep] just happened? [man 2] Something just happened<br \/>\nthat we caught on camera. Dude, it stinks. [narrator] Field researcher<br \/>\n and author Ken Gerhard tries to help us understand<br \/>\nwhat we’re seeing in the video. My first thoughts are “Is there something alive<br \/>\n beneath the water that’s creating these bubbles and this disturbance<br \/>\n in the water?” Yale Lake is connected<br \/>\n to the Columbia River, which has been said to be home<br \/>\n to this massive creature called Colossal Claude. Sightings date back<br \/>\n to the early 1930s. The general physical description<br \/>\nis a huge animal, about 40 feet long, with a serpentine, although<br \/>\n a very thick powerful body and what was described<br \/>\n as a very evil snake-y head. Many of the lakes<br \/>\n around the world where these monsters<br \/>\n have been reported all boast healthy populations<br \/>\n of salmon and trout. So perhaps these lake monsters<br \/>\nmight also live in the ocean and follow<br \/>\n the salmon populations into fresh water to feed. There are dozens,<br \/>\nmaybe thousands of undiscovered creatures<br \/>\ninhabiting the world’s lakes. Recently, researchers uncovered<br \/>\naround 40 new species in Lake Mweru,<br \/>\nlocated between Zambia and the Democratic<br \/>\nRepublic of Congo. But was whatever these kayakers<br \/>\nsaw a creature from the deep? Let’s see what’s swimming<br \/>\nin our experts’ thought bubbles. Marine biologist<br \/>\n Dr. Shea Conger begins her analysis by addressing<br \/>\n the lake monster theory. [Conger] The number of salmon<br \/>\n in the Columbia River has dramatically decreased and this is an important<br \/>\nresource not only for humans, but for wildlife. So if there was some sort<br \/>\nof abnormally large animal in Yale Lake, it wouldn’t have<br \/>\n a lot of food to live off of. And so it’s pretty<br \/>\n unlikely that there are undiscovered large<br \/>\n animals in Yale Lake. There are actually a couple<br \/>\n of freshwater seal populations in the world, but if this were something<br \/>\n like a seal or a whale, we would definitely<br \/>\n see the animal itself. And seals really<br \/>\n only hold their breath for maybe<br \/>\n 20 minutes at a time. [narrator]<br \/>\n What about those bubbles? Geologist Bob Anderson<br \/>\n helps us figure out what could be happening here. Natural gas and oil are formed<br \/>\nbetween sedimentary layers and you get a lot<br \/>\n of Carboniferous materials that are from a time<br \/>\n before the dinosaurs. And these areas<br \/>\n get buried deep down and that pressure and heat<br \/>\n causes those organic materials to break down<br \/>\n into hydrocarbons. And all it takes<br \/>\n is a crack in the rock and they just release<br \/>\n and they pop real fast. [narrator] The Carboniferous<br \/>\n period occurred 300 million years ago. So these organic materials<br \/>\n have been building pressure for quite some time,<br \/>\n just waiting to blow. When you look at the video and you add in<br \/>\nthe combination of those bubbles and the smell at the end. [man] Dude, it stinks! [Anderson] It’s a dead clue<br \/>\n that it’s some type of natural gas<br \/>\n that’s coming up. [narrator] This happens<br \/>\n all over the world. Massive underwater craters<br \/>\n have been discovered off the coast of Norway, up to 147 feet deep<br \/>\n and 2,624 feet wide. Researchers have deemed<br \/>\n them the cause of expulsions of gas rising to the surface<br \/>\n in the area. Our verdict? Natural gas. The smell was the clencher. The kayaker complained<br \/>\nabout the horrible aroma, which is a common<br \/>\nattribute of methane gas when it mixes<br \/>\nwith hydrogen sulfide, causing a rotten egg odor. While the men didn’t come across<br \/>\nColossal Claude, they did still stumble upon a remarkable piece<br \/>\nof natural history.<br \/>\n<br \/>\nWOW!
