Hachik\u014d is known in Japanese as ch\u016bken Hachik\u014d (\u5fe0\u72ac\u30cf\u30c1\u516c, &#8220;faithful dog Hachik\u014d&#8221;) \u2014 hachi meaning eight, and a suffix k\u014d meaning affection.<\/p>\n<p>In 1924, Hidesabur\u014d Ueno, a professor in the agriculture department at the University of Tokyo, took Hachik\u014d, a golden brown Akita, as a pet. During his owner&#8217;s life, Hachik\u014d greeted him at the end of each day at the nearby Shibuya Station. The pair continued their daily routine until May 1925, when Professor Ueno did not return. The professor had suffered a cerebral hemorrhage and died, never returning to the train station where Hachik\u014d was waiting. Each day for the next nine years, nine months and fifteen days, Hachik\u014d awaited Ueno&#8217;s return, appearing precisely when the train was due at the station.<\/p>\n<p>Hachik\u014d attracted the attention of other commuters. Many of the people who frequented the Shibuya train station had seen Hachik\u014d and Professor Ueno together each day. Initial reactions from the people, especially from those working at the station, were not necessarily friendly.
