…Anti-magic swordplay? Granted, this place already has explicit use of fairies, magic and magitek, but still…
The military ranks have also been a trouble to translate if only because modern verbal convention has transformed the inferred meaning of some of the words. The biggest offenders for this one are “Captain” and “Commander”, since they’re both meant to be specific ranks but gets commonly used to describe the person in charge of a ship instead. (And in the case of “Captain”, also gets commonly used when speaking in terms of a person in charge of small teams, so that one gets triple duty issues.)
For example, I thought about using “Commodore Tact Myers” as the way to address him in the previous game, but it omits his station as the one in charge of the Luxiole. On the flip side, “Captain Tact Myers” would express his station (as a certain fictional pirate would emphasize), but from a technical standpoint it’s an incorrect designation because that’s not his rank (at least not anymore). As the compromise: Use “captain” only when discussing ranks, use “commander” only when describing whoever’s in command of a ship.
So anyway, here’s the ranks I’m using for this translation series. They’re somewhat based off of real ranks, but I’ve also fallen into the narrative trap of using ranks that don’t quite match for the status given (or aren’t even used in a naval setting) but sound cool. Ordered from lowest to highest: Ensign (archaic replacement of private?), Lieutenant, Corporal (wrong branch?, would have been Commander but see above), Major (wrong branch?), Colonel, Captain, Commodore (archaic replacement of brigadier general?), Vice Admiral, Admiral, Fleet Admiral (may be changed to Supreme Admiral depending on how grandiose I want to sound)
