In a mysterious world where humans and demons coexist, it has been a lifetime since humans ruined the environment and fell into a state of constant war. A parched desert now covers the globe, and water is the most precious resource. The Royal Army, serving under the King, controls the only known source of water. Those transporting the vital fluid through the dry wastelands find themselves beset by demons (who get thirsty too, you know). Among them is Beelzebub, the demon prince, son of Satan himself — and you know Beelzebub is a bad one because he doesn’t respect bedtime, and often doesn’t brush his teeth. When the stern, no-nonsense Sheriff Rao visits the demons’ village, and asks for their help in locating a fabled oasis (thus bypassing the tyrannical king’s control of all remaining water), it’s Beelzebub and the grizzled old demon Thief who join him on this desperate, dangerous quest. They’re not long out of town when their troubles really begin!
Though he’s best known for two series from the 1980s, cult favourite DR. SLUMP and the world-renowned sensation DRAGONBALL, celebrated Japanese manga creator Akira Toriyama has crafted many other, shorter manga tales. Among them is the mini-epic SAND LAND, a demon-infested, post-apocalyptic screwball romp which appeared briefly in 2000. Toriyama’s countless fans can rejoice because now, a quarter century later, an anime adaptation has further rekindled the work’s appeal.
Fantasia’s crowd can take particular pleasure in this news, because the director is none other than the talented Toshihisa Yokoshima, a deft master of CG animation whose short film COCOLORS won a Satoshi Kon Award at the festival in 2017. Yokoshima is no stranger to Toriyama’s work, having toiled on the DRAGON QUEST video game, and he’s just the right person to bring SAND LAND to the big screen — so stay hydrated, steer clear of the royal army, and step on the gas, because it’s no mirage… SAND LAND awaits at Fantasia!

À force de guerroyer constamment, l’humanité a détruit l’environnement depuis belle lurette, et la planète est maintenant un désert aride et mystérieux où les humains coexistent avec les démons. Dans ce contexte, bien entendu, l’eau est ce qu’il y a de plus précieux, et c’est le Roi qui contrôle l’unique source d’eau potable grâce à son armée royale. Ceux qui sont chargés de transporter l’eau à travers les étendues désertiques sont souvent attaqués par des démons (ils ont soif aussi, non mais), et en particulier leur prince, Belzébuth, le fils de Satan lui-même. Belzébuth est vraiment un dur à cuire : il ne se couche jamais à l’heure prévue, et refuse souvent de se brosser les dents. Un jour, l’impassible shérif Rao rend visite au village des démons afin de leur demander de l’aide pour tenter de localiser une oasis fabuleuse. Si un tel endroit existait bel et bien, le monde serait libéré du contrôle tyrannique exercé par le Roi. Le prince Belzébuth et un vieux démon hirsute dénommé Thief acceptent de se joindre au shérif… mais il s’agit là d’une quête dangereuse, et les ennuis commencent sitôt qu’ils quittent le village!
Le mangaka Akira Toriyama est surtout connu pour ses séries à succès des années 1980 : DR. SLUMP, un film culte, et DRAGONBALL, qui fit sensation mondialement. Or, Toriyama a signé de nombreux autres mangas plus courts, dont SAND LAND, paru en 2000, une mini saga épique se déroulant dans un monde post-apocalyptique surréaliste et infesté de démons. Un quart de siècle plus tard, ses nombreux fans peuvent se réjouir, puisqu’une adaptation animée de SAND LAND remet de l’avant cette œuvre fort intéressante de Toriyama.
Le réalisateur de cette nouvelle adaptation n’est autre que le talentueux Toshihisa Yokoshima, un maître de l’animation en images de synthèse, lauréat du Prix Satoshi Kon en 2017, ici même à Fantasia, pour son court-métrage COCOLORS. Ayant travaillé sur le jeu vidéo DRAGON QUEST, Yokoshima était déjà familier avec l’univers de Toriyama et s’avérait le candidat tout désigné afin de porter SAND LAND au grand écran. Alors voilà, buvez beaucoup d’eau, tâchez d’éviter l’armée royale, et appuyez sur l’accélérateur — car ceci n’est assurément pas un mirage!

The Bible does not lie, people like what destroys them (Beelzebub wrapped in an image of a very cute little monster)… lack of knowledge destroy them.
So in the era of 2020’s, people love and worship manga and anime about demons that are at the root of evil, i.e the most extreme threat to man after sin. Not only do they love it but they would even be willing to behead you to break their sleep about it… What a sad generation.
I wonder why this mangaka chose to use his artistic genius to promote Beelzebub.
I do not like the CGI but I will watch this when it gets released, in honour of Akira Toriyama
