Welcome to my psuedo 100 subscriber special! Every pianist starts by learning the basic key of C Major…so how many anime songs use it? The answer is not many, but maybe more than you think – so here are 10 of them compiled into one seamless medley!
~Light spoilers ahead for the anime in the track list…you have been warned~
Although all the songs are in the same key, they showcase an extremely broad range of styles and difficulty. Fast, upbeat songs like DREAM SOLISTER; slower sentimental songs that make you cry, like Watashi No Uso. Songs from Your Name OST, with extremely simple one voice melodies accompanied by single chords, versus Animenz’s arrangement of My Dearest, with sweeping virtuosic arpeggios. And despite all of this, every song is equally beautiful in its own right, and achieves exactly the purpose it was set to do in the respective anime it was in. That truly captures the beauty of anime OPs, EDs, and OSTs.
Something does unite all of these songs however – something about the key of C major seems to invoke very strong emotions, whatever they may be. The SAO song in feels like a tribute to the show (well it literally is, it was for the 10th anniversary celebration), giving a strong sense of nostalgia to long time SAO fans (hey, I’m not going to judge). Then of course, there are the three RADWIMPS songs – sorry, this almost turned into a Makoto Shinkai movie song medley! KANATAHALUKA echoes the ending of Suzume by showing that no matter what happens, to always stay strong and stay hopeful for the future. Katawaredoki elevates the emotion and beauty of the sunset scene where Mitsuha and Taki finally meet for the first time. Finally, few OSTs evoke that bittersweet, sentimental feeling better than Watashi No Uso, as Kousei (and the audience) reminisce over the joy and transformation Kaori brought into his life before her inevitable departure.
While I have played and arranged medleys before, this one feels the most special to me so far because of the emotional connection I have developed to a lot of the characters in some of these shows. I hope that comes across as you listen to the songs.
Thanks for watching! I appreciate all the support and do read all your comments! Let me know what I should cover next 😀
