Directory Opus is the “swiss army knife” of file managers; basic file management is merely one of its many skills. In this video, I’m going to show you how to customize “Dopus” to make it your own; look, layout and some functionality changes – along with a couple little tricks.

  1. Great video! Another thing, search in Preferences for FAYT, and change the drop down to always. I use that filter bar multiple times a day, easily. Turning on Flat View on a high level directory and filtering for all ZIP files, for example, is so convenient. Can even Copy all of those, say, 50 Zip files from 50 different directories into a single destination directory and choose to recreate original folder structure or just combine into one. Also, that's a great way to extract out Zip files from many different folder paths at once. No clue how you'd do that efficiently with Windows File Explorer. Maybe using Everything and searching for *.zip and right clicking from there?

  2. Great video and yes i can say it's a great software but this is very basic i would love to get to know the deeper stuff in it because i know there are many of them 🙂

  3. Great video, thanks! For searching and filtering, check out help file for "Filter Bar", very powerful feature, just press asterisk, *

  4. This i the only tutorial I found on Youtube that actually goes through things for someone who really does not understand the basics and the greatness of Directory Opus.
    Thank you uploader!

  5. There is an "inline renaming" function in basic Win 10 explorer that I've been using for ages. You press tab when you want to go down a file.

  6. Great, in-depth video. The problem I have with most third party managers is their 100% function, 0% form take on things. I understand those looking for an alternative manager are likely those looking almost exclusively for added function, but I don't believe the two have to be as mutually exclusive as developers of these managers tend to make them. I'm in my file manager a lot so I need it to be easy on the eyes. Yeah, you can adjust a few tiny things here and there but overall the program completely ignores the overall style/theme of the OS. I'm awaiting the day we can get both function and form out of a manager.

  7. Does anyone know if windows 11 will render this useless? I think I'll buy it as soon as I migrate to 11

  8. Great tutorial, a little fast paced and not for ordinary users probably. I can't get explorer to work anymore due to recurrent crashes and instability despite applying many many fixes. Hope this one does it for me. I am definitely a tinkerer.

  9. Hi, I think you're using the Pro version? I will only need the Light version for pdf management, as an online tutor. Can I view a thumbnail of the pdf? I do my best with naming files, but it's not always possible to give a name that tells me what the file is.

  10. Hi there, the promotional code supplied is invalid according to the company- I guess I must have missed the window for the discount? 🙂

  11. This is an amazing video about an amazing piece of software. Windows 10 File explorer has been getting slower and slower and getting in my way. Based on this video, I can see that Directory Opus is going to save me at least 30 minutes a day, now that I won't need to wait for Explorer. More please! For example, can you show us how to color individual folders? I have 100 projects, and being able to color the currently-active folders would be awesome. Thanks.

  12. Excellent video! I've been using Dir Opus for many years and know it from Amiga days. Not having Dir Opus would be like missing an arm.

  13. this is the exact video i was looking for. my only issue with DO after using for 15 minutes now is that when i open a program from the full screen start menu it doesnt automatically close the start menu.

  14. A bit late to this party… Been using Directory Opus since version 9. Always looking for ways to make DO work better for me.
This time around I am looking for ways to play around with "Folder Formats"
I am usually in details mode but certain folders I want one set of details and in other folders other details.
An Example might be .. In my downloads folder I would like to see executable (exe, msi etc) shown highlighted in red.
In my installations folder I want to see version numbers etc
Might be a good topic for you to cover

  15. is there a solution for its limited "sort by" options? i like and often use windows' many sort by options, such as frame height, width, total bitrate, bitrate etc…

  16. Hi! Is there a way to do sign offs on files? I have a CPA firm and we have people sign off on work papers when they are accounted for (I'd like 2 levels of sign offs (with time stamp) – one signoff/timestamp for staff and one signoff/timestamp for partner. Is this possible? Thank you!

  17. Brilliant video thanks. Can you:
    1. In regular explorer or file finder say when saving word file. Use a global shortcut to open same directory in Opus?

    2. If a path is in clipboard, either use a global shortcut to open in Opus. Or focus on Opus, use Keyboard shortcut to auto open directory from clipboard?

  18. First, it's fantastic that you explain at the beginning the backup & restore function. The way you structured explanations for modifications to Directory Opus (DOPUS) was very methodical and practical. This is a truly well done video because you are a good teacher, you addressed what the majority want to know when starting to use it: surface customization.

Could you explain why you use move your hands from your keyboard to your mouse instead of utilizing hotkeys via your keyboard to perform all your navigation actions (5:44)?
I could understand using your mouse & keyboard for the sake of instruction, and to help people get on board with DOPUS, so they perceive it as more relatable.

  19. I've been using Dopus for years. Didn't know some of this stuff! Thanks! That Down arrow rename is going to save me a lot of time.

  20. 1. How can I add a column for 'Favorites Folders' that I visit more often.
    2. Can we change the whole app to dark mode for night time viewing ?

  21. Very nice, thank you Admin!

Admin let me ask how or what shortcut to use to appear "Find" like at the time: 27:40 – Find Files in Lister

I looked in the system for shortcuts but I can't find them

  22. Long Video, but with this level of organization it makes very easy for us to find what we want. Good Video to keep in our computer. Great Job ! Thank you !

  23. I've customized the *beep out of my DO view. Started with a custom dark theme and added some custom textures for the surfaces and background. Everything is colored, decently, to fit an unobstrusive scheme but highlighting relevant things. A nice deep blue for the active and a deep red for the passive listener, surrounded by dark grey frames. All the colums are perfectly organized by types of files and certain workflows, and they are always infront of the filename with a light transparent grey background to further clear and separate the view and make it easy to look at it. That way i also have always the relevant file info direct on display, directly in one line and easy to compare. I hated digging in files and having file sizes and other things somewhere on the right and spearated in a way that my eyes had to do extra work.
I have even setup automated tagging for a few folders where i often have to dig in many files, the automatic coloring by naming helps so much quickly finding things, and it looks damn cool and is so awesome that it can be setup to be done automatic.
But its quite some fiddling around to get to this point, and im not done yet, but its not as bad since the menus are extraordinarily easy and intuitive to navigate. Like the search function in preferences which even highlights the thing you are looking for… I`ve never seen a software so well made for both, total customazation freedom and ease of use.
So it was worth for writing a few lines, and your video helped me to get an idea when i tried out this software. Came back to watch it for a few times, because there is soooo much you can do. Its awesome. 😁👍

  24. Best video for this software.
The mouse is a bit distracting.
    Planing to do more?
I end up buying the app after this
