This anime, until now, seemed to dwell overwhelmingly in wish-fulfillment territory, with protagonist so strong that she didn't need to be scared of much of anything.
It was nice to see that, yes: this was a struggle. Her survival was an actual something that was contested and in doubt.
Until now, Fran had been pretty fearless, and that jolted a well needed dose of mortality in her. She needed that scare for this series to have least least merit in us rooting for their success.
I'm not ashamed to admit I was squeaking in panic at this scene… damn did the animators do a good job of portraying sheer terror and despair well o-o It was a shock to Fran and the watchers…
Keep in mind that Fran is fighting a B-Rank monster: enough to level a small city. While Teacher can easily dispatch anything below D or C, this shows the power difference going up B and above.
And this is just the beginning of them hitting above their weight and either winning from the skin of their teeth or losing because of how stupidly powerful their enemies are.
I wonder if that end up making fran more reliable on the sword. Like if if the teacher is taken way or not with her making her feel defenseless because of such trauma. Fran still young so this things could shape her personality a lot.

Even after reading the manga, this scene shocks me. I think the anime did better at capturing the absolute terror in this moment
this scene proved that it is absolutely necessary to wear a better protected armor. Fran's arms were exposed and were cut.

as a LN/Manga Reader I'm happy they added this scene. I was so sure they would censored it though so animating it is kinda unexpected.

Got to hand it to her for not quickly fainting there.
I couldn't help but get that falling out in my stomach like I watched a dog get hit by a car when this happened. It was pretty surprising

Now this was a good scene. Always nice to see a subversion of the expected, and I definitely didn’t see the part of her getting her hands lobbed off.
Also nice to know the sword was able to quickly reattach them as quickly as they were cut off.
