Exception (2022) Netflix Anime Series Review – エクセプション Liwai
“What is a human?” An all-star staff including writer Hirotaka Adachi (aka Otsuichi), character designer Yoshitaka Amano, composer Ryuichi Sakamoto and director Yuzo Sato presents a completely original space horror sci-fi story!
In the far future, humanity has been driven from Earth and forced to move its population to another galaxy. Members of a scouting team are sent to search for a planet suitable for terraforming. The crew is created through a biological 3D printer, but a system malfunction causes one of the crew members, Lewis, to emerge in a deformed state. As Lewis turns on his fellow crew members Nina, Mack, Patty and Oscar, a countdown to the end of the mission begins in the frightening darkness of the ship.

Nothing makes sense in this anime. Its also insultingly stupid.
its ok
I might watch this today. Nice review.
loived this anime, and how it explored 3D printing and life; and AI
loved this anime, amazing characters… the twist and ending was good for me
I’m two episodes in. The sci-fi is bad and they don’t operate smoothly in their world. They have all of this future tech but they apparently don’t know how to use it. For some reason they have fire extinguishers, no intruder countermeasures, iPads, can use the replicator for cups of coffee but not for food, and they have to use sticks for self defense. Asimov and Dick are rolling in their graves.
I wouldn't recommend it
I recommend it visually and story wise. If one can only be engaging by shooting shit, this isn't for you. It was engaging.
How can you not like the character design it's Yoshitaka Amano like ff6 illustrations in motion
It started out well… then went downhill quickly. The moment Oscar decided to hide the fact that mutated Lewis helped him when he was injured. Made absolutely no sense whatsoever. He sees they reprinted Lewis, then he decided to keep silent. Made absolutely no sense whatsoever. So what if they reprinted Lewis… why hide the fact that mutated Lewis was intelligent, wanted to negotiate, helped him etc. I painfully went through the rest of the show hoping they would salvage this somehow but they didn't. Oscar's behavior made absolutely no sense.
I remember thinking that the feather at the beginning must be significant, and I was really pleased that it was and the way they did it. I thought at least that part was clever and satisfying. I really also enjoyed the concept of the womb and thought it was very interesting and unique as far as cloning type concepts go. I think if this anime had been longer, and could've devoted more time to fleshing put details, world building, and setting up a good foundation of lore then it really could've been something special. As it is now it's just too vague and rushed to be really emotionally impactful. I don't feel for the characters or have stake in what happens to them. The one you feel the most for is Lewis and that ending seemed kinda cheap and very obvious. It also would've been cool to actually explore the relationships between the doubles. Dealing with another version of yourself is such a cool concept and this didn't really explore that at all despite having such a great opportunity to do so. It's kinda weird that they didn't tbh. It wasn't a bad anime by any means, but I don't think it lived up to it's full potential, and that's a shame because it's definitely got potential.
it is bad. carefull could be a SPOILER because iam highlighting a flaw. (i dont want to destory somebodys entertainment, even if I think its bad)
every body in the group does something bad or suspicious except one who is totaly nice dont want to hurt anyone. who is the traitor? ye edge of my seat…. writer these days think we are stupid and well.. maybe they are right
This anime is just amazing…-Ly stupid. They have the tech to travel the galaxy, print whole humans, print objects, heal a broken bone in just a hour… But they can't use it to stop humans from aging and/or just suspend them in cryosleep so they need to either kill them off or let them die and re-print a clone? Wtf? Speaking of tech, if they have the tech to terraform planets and do all of that… Why not CLEAN EARTH to begin with? The animation is also very ugly and robotic, and speaking of ugly, that 'art'style… I have no issue with good 3d, but this is NOT it
Good review bro, I just binged watched this, loved Lewis and Marek. The ending made me think of revelation and stories in Genesis. Powerful scene when Marek goes back into the chamber, the orphan into the mothers womb. Music was just stunning
I found it engaging all the way to the end. Thoroughly enjoyable
I don't really get the "ethical" dilemma here, two episodes in. The death of the doctor shows dying for an printed human is not a big deal. They should have euthanized Lewis and reprinted him normally. And we kill humans everyday, especially if they cause death to another human.
