In this episode of Forgotten Ghibli, we examine 1994’s Pom Poko. A tale of the humble tanuki, its mythical abilities, and the struggle to survive in a modern, ever-expansive Tokyo metropolis. Written and directed by Isao Takahata in 1994 – a film that is whimsical and creative, yet deep and profound. An extensive and deep look into environmentalism, nature, and our place within it, Takahata probes the limits of human compassion for the environments we so careless bulldoze over.
