Why Vivziepop Can’t Escape the ‘If X Was Written by Vivziepop’ Meme

Oh boy, what a beautiful day on the internet. No vivy pop drama in sight. I’m so relieved she finally left Twitter behind to live peacefully on blue sky instead of firing off reactionary tweets at the most harmless memes and thumbnails. [Applause] Just a quick note before we dive in. This segment was recorded after I’d already finished the video, but I felt it needed some context. So, let’s be real. Yeah, the meme I used in the thumbnail for the fixed film is overplayed, but that was kind of the point. I wanted it to capture the same knee-jerk negativity people had when they first saw the fixed trailer. When my video went up, the film wasn’t even on Netflix yet, and people had only seen the trailer, and most had already written it off. My goal was to rage bait a little to get people curious enough to click. And once they did, the actual video itself praised the movie and pushed people to give it a fair shot in spite of how runchy and cringe some of the trailers seemed. I’m not cartoony or saber spark, and I can’t just throw up a plain thumbnail and expect clicks. I wanted something layered, something more than just Vivy bad, movie bad. And yeah, it was a dead meme, but it was never meant to be a personal attack on Vivy Pop. If anything, the thumbnail was baked to get people to consider runchy humor and animation with a more open mind. That said, I still think the meme holds a bit of truth when we look at Vivy Pump’s work as a creator, not as a woman. So, let’s get into that. Imagine, if you will, Punch Punch Forever, Peipido, Blackadis, Gaslight District, and just for the sake of an easy edit, Bear and the Big Blue House. If they were all written by Vivsy Pop, give me chicken pot pie. Hey, you squeezy little mouse. Go get a sorry ass me like that [ __ ] Get out of my way, you piece of [ __ ] Wrong. Okay, that last one was actually kind of funny, but you get the point. Any property rewritten by Vivy Pop would instantly spark discussion. You only have to look at how the internet reacted to Homestuck being produced by her and her team at Spindlehorse. Stick around, by the way. I’ll get right back to that soon enough. But in my humble opinion, I feel like this is for good reason. While the meme is obviously overplayed and often used as a way to personally attack Vivy Pop, it still works the same way all good jokes do. There’s always a hint of truth. The whole insert property but written by Vivy Pop gag perfectly encapsulates the way nearly everything she touches ends up infused with her distinctly teenage sensibilities that she never shook off from when she started animation. where every character, no matter what, talks like they’re in the outtakes of a Spongebob episode, swearing constantly. You [ __ ] [ __ ] And where in that it’s actually kind of hilarious, this it just feels incredibly painful to sit through. It’s become such a reoccurring issue in her writing that entire threads have been dedicated to counting the number of swears in each episode of Hasbin Hotel. Hell, just in a recent Hell of a Boss and Hasbin Hotel crossover promotion for Amazon, the characters managed to swear several dozen times within the span of two to three minutes. And I get it, they’re supposed to be from hell, but there’s a certain point in which you can kind of refrain from swearing non-stop as a means to establish that your characters are from hell. Just look at many other shows that do the same thing with their demon-like characters. The problem is that excessive swearing in shows like Hasbin Hotel and Hell of a Boss often comes across as more distracting than edgy, and it can feel like a massive crutch for weak writing rather than a genuine character’s voice or sense of humor. Also, if you enjoyed the video so far, be sure to leave a like and let me know what you think of Vivy Pop below. I mean, try and imagine if Todd from Bojack Horseman was written like he was in Breaking Bad at the very beginning, just having him spam the word [ __ ] because they knew that it was funny for people before on the internet. And while he’s not my favorite character of Bojack Horseman, he was given far more dimensions and was written in a far more mature way than any number of comic relief characters in Hasbin Hotel. It’s for this reason that a lot of people like to call her show safe edgy because she never takes the necessary risks to write her characters in any meaningful way outside of spamming swear words to build up any level of character. Much of it is just swearing and off-color visual gags. Hell, movies like Fixed are edgy, swear a lot, but are given more praise and especially with the recent trailer doing pretty poorly online, insane amounts of reconsideration. Because unlike Vivy’s work, Gendi was actually edgy with fixed. So edgy, in fact, early promotions almost made the entire internet collectively avoid it. But myself and many others took to the film realizing it actually had quite a lot of charm and a little bit of art, too. By the way, I put a video out on that film just a week before the film release, so be sure to check that out if you’re interested. Vivy’s issue was that instead of adding wit or depth, the constant barrage of profanity risks alienating viewers who want sharper dialogue and stronger storytelling. For many critics, this overreiance on swearing has become emblematic of Vivy Pop’s entire style, reinforcing negative perceptions of her work. Yet, despite years of feedback and criticism from goobers like me online, she continues to double down on this approach, refusing to adjust or evolve, which only deepens the divide between her shows and the audiences who might otherwise give them a chance. I mean, personally, I had to force myself through the show. While I appreciated the animation, a lot of the dialogue took me out sometimes, and I’d have to take a little bit of time off from binging the show because it was just a bit too much for me. In fact, this issue is only exacerbated with Panton Stalking with Garter Belt that recently released, proving that swearing and runchy humor can work when woven into the DNA of a show. Inspired by American cartoons like Powerpuff Girls and Invader Zim, it takes crude jokes and profanity and turns them into stylistic weapons, matching the outrageous animation and absurd tone. The vulgarity feels earned and deliberate, serving the satire and the energy of the story rather than distracting from it. And this show has literal devil characters in it. And even they swear far less than the serious, grounded characters of Hasbin Hotel or Elva Boss. That’s why audiences embraced it so fully. Its over-the-top crudeness became part of the fun. Even inspiring memes that highlight how many people love Pandian Stockings profanity but grown over Hasbin Hotel and Hell of a Boss. It’s probably the only show I know that people actually actively cheer on bad line reads of swear words from characters from Japan. You [ __ ] Oh yeah, you [ __ ] The difference is so clear. One uses swearing as a tool for comedy and style, while the other leans on it as a shortcut, making Vivy Pop’s writing feel shallow and tryh hard by comparison. Panty and Stalking knows what it is and tonally sticks to that. It’s a goofy, etchy anime and it hardly ever tries to be anything else. Whereas Vivy Pop’s shows will hit you on the head with grape jokes and then the next moment try and tell you to take the show seriously. But this is where things are getting a little more interesting. Vivy has been handed a property with a truly massive legacy. Homestuck, much like Undertale, it’s an indie phenomenon that inspired both passionate devotion and notoriously toxic fandom discourse. and the fans are understandably protective of how it’s being adapted. While most of the material is already written, the web comics’s unique format leaves a lot of room for interpretation, and many are concerned Vivy Pop might warp its characters into exaggerated versions that resemble her has been hotel cast. So far, the pilot appears more restrained than her past work, though moments like Dave casually calling someone numb nuts already raise eyebrows. Still, it suggests she might be learning even slightly that writing for adults doesn’t mean drowning every scene in profanity. Honestly, who knows? This adaptation could be the turning point that shows Vivy that there are more effective ways to write for mature audiences than treating dialogue like a Club Penguin chat room with the filters turned off. At the end of the day, swearing isn’t inherently bad. It can be funny, sharp, and even iconic when used with intent, as shows like Pandian Stalking prove. It’s a show that is not only hilariously written though, but also has some of the coolest animations to come out of Japan for a show as non-serious as it is. Whereas, unfortunately, Hasbin Hotel has been lagging behind on that aspect. So, unfortunately, it has a little more heavy lifting to do. But the problem comes when profanity becomes a substitute for real writing, which is why so many people feel turned off by Vivy Pop’s work. With Homestuck, Vivy Pop is stepping back from being the sole creative voice and instead contributing more to the animation side while leaving much of the writing to others. That major shift opens the door for her studio to experiment with new styles of comedy, tone, and pacing. Things that could help push her work beyond the familiar rhythms of the hellverse, where constant swearing and sex jokes is the norm. If her team succeeds in bringing fresh voices and approaches into the mix, it might not only broaden her studios creative identity, but it also might breathe new life into her existing projects. Still, it’s too early to know if this will mark a turning point in Vivy Pop’s career or just a brief detour before returning to the same patterns that made her both beloved and incredibly divisive among people online. But I don’t know. What do you guys think? Let me know below and I’ll see you next week.

So a partial response to her bluesky tweet about my thumbnail…Again, I’m not here to villainize her; so don’t go harrasing her. She very wisely chose not to share my page for a harassment campaign, so I really respect that. Even if you don’t like her, she deserves respect.

From Hazbin Hotel to Helluva Boss, Vivziepop’s writing leans on swearing and edgy jokes perhaps too much. Comparing Panty and Stocking, Homestuck, and more, this video explores her style, criticism, and potential for growth growth on the horizon.

  1. Alastor is at least one character she didn't ruin by swearing. PSG is funny while not crutching on swears

  2. Some losers on The Internet saw that Kesha animated music video and unironically said:

"We're gonna make you a superstar."

And Jeff Bezos, in all of his wisdom, said:

"I want you on my streaming platform."

  3. honestly I think EVERYTHING in psg is better than vivzie’s stuff 😭

there’s a lot of sex jokes and swears but it’s just done in a certain way? idk

  4. I wanna point out one seriously flawed piece of story decision she made

So in season 1 she showed the (hollow) various factions in and out of hell
Showed the tv internet demons are obviously enemies and set up the angels as the direct faction against hell
Not bad alright so what does she do?
Well immediately in the 1st season the angels are the main enemy to Charlie and her friends and they fight each other and barely win against them
Also they only won because they killed Adam there’s still a bunch of angels left
Well obviously season 2 is gonna have the angels rebuilding their organization and numbers to become even stronger then before
That leaves the tv demon as the main villains for season 2
What. The. Hell was she smoking?
Seriously you expect your audience to now view the tv demon as the big bad and a threat to Charlie and her gang?
Really? Cause to me she LITERALLY DEFEATED ONE OF THE STRONGEST ANGELS
So ya felt like she might’ve gotten her scripts mixed up because it should’ve been the other way around cause there’s no way anyone can believe they’re a threat
Hell they can’t even have it where the tv demon tries to blackmail or threaten them from the shadows
The radio demon guy easily gets under his skin and knows his tricks
He already tried sending in a spy and that not only failed it backfired
She sucks at writing simple as that and I only watched the first season cause I was entertained by the radio demon
But that was a ton of crap to sit through

    That’s my thoughts

  5. Panty and Stocking along with Deadpool all have sex jokes and a lot of swearing but I think the difference is that the jokes fit and the swearing makes sense. The sex jokes and swears in the hellaverse seems forced.. not to mention SA always seems to be a “joke” in vivzie’s work. How are people supposed to take Angel and Sir pentious’s trauma seriously when it’s written as all shits n giggles?

  6. I swear it really seems like Hazbin Hotel is really similar to Panty and Stocking; it really seems like the creator of Hazbin Hotel got ideas from the show. Panty and Stocking is a lot better though honestly..

  7. Remember Drawn Together. That show is way more offensive than anything Viv has written but the vulgarity has variety.

  8. I’m nor an anime fan or western cartoon fan but adore Panty and Stocking. Yes the show is crude and full of swear words. However, the show takes so much risks with insane episode ideas and art styles. Each episode feels like artists going crazy with no hold back.
In addition to that, when the show locks in, I mean it LOCKS IN. The action scenes take advantage of the cartoonish design and create amazing spectacles with blood pumping music, almost making it look like a scene from a fully budgeted animated movie. The crude swearing almost becomes a set up in the show for those moments.

  9. Vivziepop being mad at these memes just shows how much of a hypocrite she is. (well, not the only thing that makes her a hypocrite, but you get the idea)

Because if you are going to use "edgy" humour, you need to be thick-skinned. Ok, I have to admit that's a basic advice for any content creator when dealing with criticism, but I think it's way more important if you are being "edgy" because one the core aspects of this approach is that you are taking a piss at something, and it creates this image around you that you don't give a f**k about what others think of you or your work.

I think the most mature response she should've have in this situation is to ignore these memes and go with her merry life. But alas, she's just like any average edgelord on the internet, she just likes to take a piss at anything she doesn't like, but when people respond in kind she starts crying on a corner like a pathetic snowflake.

  10. Look in my personal opinion, some complaints about the show are reasonable like for example i feel the issues are more writing focussed, but as someone whos tried to write a book(failed extremely badly and deleted it after) i feel some empathy for her but the one of the worst criticisms(in my opinion) is the swearing it isn't really that bad, maybe its just cause im Australian and the area i live, swearing is normal but eh, if you ask me the swearing is agreeably the worst agruement against it. But this is my opinion i don't understand why its such a big deal but thats just me.

Edit: the jokes aren't that bad either the same reasons as listed fot swearing.

  11. That's the difference between having swearing and toilet/dumb humour as an additive and not as your main thing. That way even if a joke doesn't hit the rest can be enjoyed by more than just one age group. But leaving comedy aside, in terms of plot Hazbin has it in the bag imo

  12. Hazbin hotel thinks swearing and sex should be the norm . It's propaganda. You all are so obvious isn't in the west?
It's all about left vs right .

Panty and Stocking doesn't give a fuck. You Mind your own fucking business just like japanese people live their lives away from the social order on the surface.

Also notice that nobody is talking about japanese creators identities? It's always the western creators becoming celebrities.

  13. Its kinda hilarious in an ironic way. Vivziepop's first work, a webcomic she drew as a teen called Zoophobia, doesn't rely on swearing and sex like the hellaverse does it actually wanted you to take is seriously. But now that she has her own studio and two shows in production she resorts to these juvenile middle school writing tactics. If something someone wrote is more mature than something they created as a grown adult, something's gonna incredibly wrong.

  14. She's a good writer, but could be so much better if she just got rid of three things. First, the immaturity, swearing had to have a build up to be funny, when swearing happens ever 5 seconds it doesn't make the majority of people laugh. Second, not every single character has to be LBGTQ, it's not only unrealistic but it also makes any conflicts between characters about homosexuality meaningless, like for example Moxxie & his father, why would Moxxie care what his father things when pretty much every single other demon in hell is gay? And why would Moxxie's father even have a problem with it to begin with when straight relationships are pretty much nonexistent in the Helluvaverse outside of Lucifer and Lillith? Third is the costant sex jokes. As much as I like Angel Dust, he's quite funny and his sexual remarks are usually well placed (Some of the time), a person going through abuse like him would NOT act like him, you never hear of someone who was sexually abused whoring himself out as much as he does. It could be his "way of coping", but like with every other case of character development in the two series, no development actually happens. Angel hasn't changed from being a pervert, same with Blitzo & Stolas not changing from being the most toxic couple in fiction. The only half decent character who actually seemed like he had character development was killed off in the last episode of Hazbin, so to be honest series two NEEDS to be good, it severely needs to actually write some plot and write the characters into characters and not tropes/stereotypes.

  15. Now… I don't want to make you, the video creator, out to be part of the problem. You seem earnest and down to Earth as a person. However…

If I had to narrow down the Vivziepop hate's source, it would be how everyone wants to be in on the conversation about shows that may or may not be for them. Like I feel that this discourse is partially from FOMO. Especially with Hazbin Hotel where those into art, animation and musicals on YouTube see what all the fuss is about with this infamous Vivzie-whoever.

But you can’t please everyone. So not everyone would buy into the hype. That would be bad enough but then you have the hate culture around Vivianne overall, making it some moral argument.

Now you're more chill but I feel an issue with this video is that, well, it feels like it wants Vivziepop's writing to be something it isn't when it feels more like… it's largely not for you.

  16. Seriously internet
Now I have to choose between Panty and Stocking and Vivziepop?!

I got two words for that!!!
    SCREW YOU!!!!!!

  17. Why are you anti HH ppl so miserable and obsessed with dunking on this poor woman…. Get a fucking grip.

  18. The overuse of swearing might be the only issue I found with Vivziepop's work. The animation and design are pretty solid in my opinion, and I don't see any issues with them.

Another problem I might have with her work would be the use of musicals to express the emotions within a series that is supposed to take place in hell.

I'm the type of person who always likes to listen to a good musical when there is one. But she could have tried better ways to make us feel the emotions in her works.

I mean, it's kind of hard to feel the weight of a deep emotional moment, if you're going to turn everything into a musical in the next scene.

Even if you try to include parts of that moment in the musical. It's pretty meaningless if you don't know how to match the tone of the song with the respective moment.

The best moment for me so far in both of her series was when we got the chance to explore the complicated past of Fizzarolli and Blitzo.

But then, another musical had to come along with Fizzarolli in it. Which pretty much dispelled all of the depth I felt during those flashbacks.

Another moment that I loved was when we got to see Moxxie's traumatic childhood. Because I could really feel all the tragedy in his past, without it having to be exposed through a musical.

So, with less swearing and a little less musicality for the tragic or deeply emotional moments, her work would be pure gold in my opinion.

  19. You know your point about “It’s in Hell” made me think of Doom for some reason. I don’t recall if I heard anyone say a swear in the games but the demons especially speak pretty formally or at least the ones that speak English.

  20. @@MrBooone Mostly I really Love PSG in Season 1 but Not Season 2💔🥀, Why?! OG VA didn't Reprise because Crunchyroll Dub never Used Anymore, then They're Recast are Talentless, Mostly I really Hate NEwww… Voice Panty she's sounds God-Awful Deadass Voice Worst than Hazbin Hotel Recast.

But I do Rewatch PSG S1More than S2 It's just feels Cash-Grab anime for Freaking 15 Years Return waiting by Fans 💔🥀 and Recycled it.

  21. in case you're curious at the 0:15-17 mark, I had to edit out the spongebob music and audio because it got falsely claimed by a company completely unrelated to the music. I can't be assed to go through appealing so, gotta read the meme I made like a visual gag now lol

  22. Hazbin Hotel wishes it had the appeal of Panty and Stocking. Panty and Stocking never tried to stray away from what it was. Hazbin and Helluva was going for a satirical, comedic spin but then Vivzie tried to make it deep and meaningful. If you were going for deep and meaningful, you should have started that way. Changing up the writing mid season takes everything comical and turns it into character flaws. Now the jokes are no longer funny and the show makes it like nothing is okay. Vivzie and her little woke mob are a joke. To be frank, swearing a lot isn’t even raunchy. It just means they can’t write and fall back on stupid humor. Of course there’s plenty of LGBT messages too because of personal bias. It’s all just hideous and won’t end well.
