My Melody & Kuromi|What’s your favorite scene?|Prop Maker & Animator Harune Sato
I’m Harune Sato,
Prop Maker and Animator. I also worked on animation testing. My favorite scene is in episode 7,
where a tornado appears. In that scene, My Melody and Kuromi
are surrounded by the tornado. I tested different ways to shoot it and even built the set ourselves, so personally, it’s a scene
that left a strong impression on me. I started by sculpting a forked spear. The flat design was already super cute, so I thought about
how to bring it into three dimensions. From the side,
I wanted the curves to look beautiful, and I thought it would be cute, almost like candy,
if the heart part were transparent. It was just a pattern in the illustration,
but I found it cute to carve a groove into the spear. I hadn’t used a 3D printer much before, but I learned how to use it and created the spear. At first, there were some issues with the prints, and a few pieces had holes, so getting them right was tricky. Color was the most important part, so I experimented to make it look cute. Since the film’s world is full of classical designs, I chose a slightly muted color. I created the spear
to make it look great on screen. and it turned out really well,
so I’m very happy with it. How to express the tornado. We poked wool into a urethane tube with a needle to give it the right shape, then cut slits so wires could be inserted. We threaded several thick aluminum wires
through two wooden frames, replacing each urethane tube as it moved out. We called it the rocket pencil method, which we used to animate the tornado. Because the tornado in the background moves, we had no choice but to shoot it all in-camera,
in one take, without any compositing. Mr. Bowda, a veteran animator, animated the tornado, while I animated the characters, and the two of us shot the scene together. The Otomodachi (friends) characters
spin all the way to the back, so it would be interesting to see
all the little details. For the tornado in the wide shot, it’s made of wool felt, but we had to animate it so it would grow
and gradually fill the frame, so we first built a set
about 900 mm x 900 mm in size. Since wool felt wouldn’t support itself, I inserted a slightly thicker wire into it and rotated it frame by frame, replacing it with longer wires as it got bigger. Looking back at the scene again,
I still can’t believe we actually did that. The prop makers all worked together to create something so cute,
down to the smallest details, and I hope you will notice those details too.
