The Most Offensively Obscene Show Ever Made
This show makes South Park look like a PBS Kids special. Panty and Stalking is the most offensive anime ever made and it’s finally getting a sequel. And while some people might write this off as a dumb, outdated show with nothing to offer but poop jokes, I’m here to tell you those people are wrong because there’s also a lot of guns and sex. But in all seriousness, Panty and Stalking could not have come at a better time. In a world with everyone talking about the emotional characters of Freren or the wholesome characters of a show like Dondadon, Auntie and Stalking offers a show where you can watch dumb characters do fun things. And while it doesn’t offer some hidden philosophy or deeper meaning, it does offer something even better. That’s why in this video, I’m going to revisit the cult classic that perfectly embodies the year 2010, discuss how season 2 could be even better, and explain why this show is a mustwatch for anyone who loves cartoons. Just be warned that there will be some minor spoilers. Now, first off, let’s talk about what the show is even about. Because, you know, Panty and Stalking is supposed to be this obscene show, but odds are if you haven’t seen it before, then you have no idea what the actual story is. The story of Panty and Stalking goes something like this. Panty and Stalking are two angels that were too profane for heaven and were kicked out. Panty is a scandalous blonde who prides herself on her body count, and Stalking is a goth girl with a wicked sweet tooth. They have to work for the priest named Garter Belt and defeat ghosts in the city between heaven and hell known as 10 city. And with each heaven coin they earn from beating ghosts, they get one step closer to earning their place back in heaven. That’s the story in a nutshell. But it’s also important to know why the show was created and what it’s supposed to emulate. Back in the 2000s when Gynax was still around, the team got together and decided they wanted to make something like all of the runchy cartoons like South Park and Drawn Together. To do that, they went ahead and made an anime that was just as obscene and offensive as any of those shows. But in addition to the adult humor, Gynax also emulates Western cartoons in a lot of other ways. There’s 13 episodes in the first season, and almost all of those episodes are split up in two parts, much like the cartoons on Cartoon Network and Nickelodeon. There’s also a lot of references to American media. Their pet dog, Chuck, instantly reminds you of Gurr from Invader Zim, and the episode titles reference movies like Fight Club, High School Musical, and Transformers. Gynax also uses an art style that is still familiar but feels closer to something like Craig McCracken thanks to the bold outlines. Also, there’s this running gag where every time they beat a ghost, it suddenly cuts to liveaction models before it explodes. I can’t think of any specific shows besides maybe Power Rangers, but I know that was definitely a big thing back in the 2000s cartoons. The big takeaway is that yes, Panty and Stalking has a lot of toilet humor, but another big selling point is that it pays tribute to all of the great shows of the 2000s. So, if you love Cartoon Network and Adult Swim, then Panty and Stalking is absolutely worth watching. But to that point, you might wonder if it’s really worth investing time in. Because even if Panty and Stalking is supposed to emulate older cartoons, it’s still a show with dumb humor and poop jokes. In other words, there’s basically no story and the whole show consists of brainless toilet humor. So, in a season with shows like Dond Don, Dr. Stone, and The Fragrant Flower, why should I devote my time to a dumb show like this? Never mind watch all of the original show. And the answer to that is very simple. None of those shows let you shut your brain off. But real quick, before I say anything else, make sure to check out my next live stream. I review new manga chapters every Sunday, Monday, and Thursday, but like I was saying, Auntie and Stalking might be dumb, but it is a show you don’t have to think about. I am being completely serious when I say that watching TV is hard. If you want to watch one show at a time, that’s fine. But especially when you’re trying to watch a bunch of shows at once, it can be hard to make time. And even when you sit down to watch them, it’s this neverending battle of wanting to watch a show but being too tired to think about what’s going on in the episode. Auntie and Stalking does not have that problem, so you can watch it whenever you want and still get the full value. Unlike a show like Dondon that is full of ball jokes, but also has plenty of layers, Panty and Stalking isn’t trying to be deep. Any hidden meaning in the show is hiding behind dozens of very obvious innuendos. There is a broader narrative, but it doesn’t come until later, and it’s not so deep that you won’t get what’s going on if you miss a few things. The show is simple enough that you have the option to give it your full attention and enjoy the animation and all the references, or watch it 5 minutes before you pass out. Now, to the point of dumb toilet humor, this does have its pros and cons. In terms of how well Panty and Stalking pulls this off, I’d say it’s somewhere between South Park and Ren and Stimpy. South Park was pretty straightforward in the early seasons, but today it mixes the toilet humor with a lot of messages that are often nuanced and insightful. Then you have something like the 2003 revamp of Ren and Stimpy, which completely aims for shock value and is so gross that it’s just plain bad. Panty and Stalking is somewhere in the middle. It doesn’t have any nuance and it’s never political. In fact, part of the charm of this show is that it’s offensive to everybody, regardless of your beliefs or values. It’s got a [ __ ] blonde who sleeps with anything with a pulse, tons of swears, tons of guns and violence, way too many jokes about used tissues. It leans into the whole Catholic priest stereotype. There’s even an incest scene, which I don’t really know why they included it, but it’s there. On that note, it’s easy to assume Panty and Stalking is purely made for shock value. Personally, it can get a bit over the top. So, while it’s much better than something like Ren and Stimpy and is much closer to something like the early episodes of South Park, the show probably isn’t for you if you don’t like this kind of humor. But that’s if you don’t like it. If you do, then Panty and Stalking is the perfect show. It does rely a bit on shock value, but the way it goes about it is a lot more fun and it makes it so that the show is just pure fun. There’s one episode where Stalking gains a ton of weight and then goes on a crazy diet. It does a bit of fat shaming, but it’s done in a way that’s surprisingly inoffensive and actually shows you that you shouldn’t hyperfocus on your figure. There’s one episode where Panty and Stalking meet their demon counterparts, Scanty and Nissocks, which kind of reminded me of Dexter and Mandark, or the Powerpuff Girls and the Rowdy Ruff Boys. There’s even an episode where the duos face off at the beach. And of course, we all know that every great anime has at least one beach episode, but it’s not all about poop jokes and sex scenes. This is still Gynax. We’re talking about the same studio that made Guran Lagon and would lead to studio Trigger making shows like Kill a Kill. Funny enough, you can kind of see the Panty and Stalking influence in Kill a Kill. I watched Kill a Kill years before Panty and Stalking, but watching Panty and Stalking now, I couldn’t help but think it felt a lot like all of the funny moments in Kill a Kill. I mean, Kill a Kill literally has a pie trap scene, which is about as classic cartoon as you can get. Plus, Panton Stalking has all of the gorgeous animation that you would expect of these studios. Every time the girls transform, it suddenly cuts to like super anime mode. Plus, there’s even an episode with a music video where the team makes all of these cool references to different bands and musical eras. Despite its western influences, the show is very Gynax/triggeroded. So, anyone who loves these studios needs to watch this show. Another thing worth mentioning is that you watch the show for the characters, not the story, which is a big theme for a lot of trigger shows. As much as I love Kill a Kill, I can barely remember the plot, but I love the characters. This is even more true for Panty and Stalking. They’re not my favorite characters necessarily, but they are cool, and it’s fun to watch them swear and beat up demons with underwear weapons. So, because I love these characters so much, I can’t wait to watch them in season 2. And if you watch the original show, you’ll definitely want to see these characters in the new episodes. But that does bring up an interesting problem, namely how season 2 will compare to season 1 after more than a decade. And here’s what I mean. Say you watch season 1 and you love it. But now you might be thinking, “Okay, season 1 is cool and all, but it was good for its time. Season 2 is coming 14 years later and things have changed. So will it be any good?” And that is an important question. By now, we should already have the first episode out, but as I’m recording this video, there’s still a week or two before the first episode, and a lot of time has passed since the first season. Panty and Stalking originally came out in 2010. This was when South Park was in season 15. Drawn Together was already a few years old. YouTube was in its machinima era with videos like sanity not included and hundreds of MW2 videos that included every swear and slur you can possibly imagine. Panty and Stalking came at the perfect time because it was the peak of edgy dark humor. It came at a time where adult cartoons like Robot Chicken and Aquatine Hunger Force had already been around for a while and teenagers were posting basically whatever they wanted on YouTube. While we still have plenty of adult cartoons and the comedy scene is just as ruthless as ever, TV and online media have seen a lot of cleaning up in the time Panty and Stalking has been gone. Another thing to keep in mind is how they’ll approach the English dub because back in the day, Panty and Stalking wasn’t even that popular in Japan. What happened was when they turned it over to Funimation, the team was encouraged to lean into the adult humor and adapt it to English audiences. In a lot of ways, Panty and Stalking owes its cult classic reputation to the original team at Funimation. So, another concern for season 2 will be how they approach the dub. They already dropped a trailer for the dub, which confirms that practically all of the original English roles have been recast, which in a way is kind of a blessing because I thought they were going to single out Chris Sabbat as Garter Belt for obvious reasons. So, the fact that they recast everybody kind of implies that the main reason they did this is because it’s an old show and they just wanted to use new talent. Even still, there is concern that season 2 might not hit the same as season 1. One, because there are new people playing old characters, and two, because there’s a chance this dub won’t be nearly as runchy. That being said, even assuming the dub runs into some issues, I think the anime will be just fine. Judging by the trailers alone, there’s nothing to suggest Trigger is stepping away from any of the adults humor. Especially with a show like Kill Kill, Trigger has never been a studio to shy away from making a good show just because it might be a bit offensive. Plus, Japan is not Hollywood, and there’s a ton of anime that in some ways are worse than Panty and Stalking. Keep your hands off my woman. Understand me? So, I’m not too worried about them toning things down in season 2. The only other concern I have is that the show is apparently exclusive to Amazon Prime. It’s kind of random because Trigger has almost exclusively been making shows for Netflix for years now. So, I’m not sure what prompted them to do this. And unfortunately, Amazon doesn’t have the best record when it comes to anime exclusives. But that’s more an issue of trendiness. Panty and Stalking is an old show, so I’m sure a lot of people will agree when I say I don’t care whether Panty and Stalking is the number one mostwatched show this season. There’s plenty of reason to believe season 2 will be even better than the original. The original show was made by Gynax right before they went down the toilet. Now it’s being handled by Trigger after they’ve made a ton of great shows like Kill the Kill, Cyberpunk Edgeunners, and Dungeon Mashy. Trigger has kind of been in their bag lately. So, I’m expecting the story and animation to be even better than before. Plus, there’s a bunch of new stuff to look forward to after season 1. There was a weird plot twist with Stalking that should play into season 2. Now, Scanty and Nissox look like they’re actually part of the main crew. And there’s two new male characters that will obviously add another layer to the usual formula. Again, I’m making this 2 weeks before season 2, so I could be dooming the show. But based on how good season 1 is, and based on how much Trigger has accomplished in the last decade, season 2 is probably going to be insanely fun to watch. And that is why I cannot recommend it enough. If you love Trigger, if you love the classic era of Nickelodeon and Cartoon Network, and you love adult cartoons like Harvey Birdman, Mike Tyson Mysteries, and Smiling Friends, where you can just shut off your brain and enjoy a fun show with quality animation, then do yourself a favor and start watching Panty and Stalking. But maybe I’m wrong. How would you rate Panty and Stalking? What are you looking forward to in season 2? Share your thoughts and see what everyone else has to say down in the comments. How would you rate Panty and Stocking? What are your expectations for the new season?
Yo i mean it kinda rules so far 🙂 thank God
hehe. good
They added brainrot newgens and social media so I think it’s pretty fire
As a ukrainian speaker, I must add: the best thing is watching P&S in original with subs
Almost half of the jokes are made japanese-ish and can't be translated with a dub
This show is basically what Viv tried to copy with hazbin and helluva, but like a billion times better
freaking love panty&stocking its finaly getting the attention it deserves after all these years <:)
I imagine the recasts in the dub were a combination of legal issues (the actors may have been signed with a specific guild, else FUNimation forbade Prime from using the same actors. IDK, this is all just guesswork on my part) and the fact that a simple search through Jamie Marchi (Panty) and Monical Rial (Stocking)'s Twitter history reveals that they are… problematic individuals, to say the least. Seriously, Jamie Marchi in particular should have been booted from the industry decades ago, and I am so glad that she isn't writing and voicing in PSG anymore.
We lowkey need to bring this 2010 "its not deep, just stupid and funny" type of media, it was always one of my favorite media
If everything is deep, the world gets too gray, we need some dumb stuff like this, gumball and teen titans go to just have a good laugh without thinking too much about it.
The final episode was just a MASTER PIECE
Everyone loves Stocking more than Panty just because of how Panty is always off with some random men every single episode, doing something (no spoilers)
I get up everyday and thank god that ts is just fiction🥀🥀
and that’s what ragebait is for countries
offense in shows
2:37 really missed opprutunity not to call it
Trans-boners
Funny and unhinged as all hell, yep, this is just the best show
5:42 i dont care if youre
Black
Gay
A woman
A christian
Fat
A virgin
Or what ever the fuck your job is
Im gonna offend you
holds breath and gets cancelled
7:56
An-ar-chyyyyyyyyy
Everyone wants to be me
Am i the only one who just got the fact that panty uses a gun to blow people?
I'm not even half through it and I feel like I watched a Helluva Boss season.
MELIODAS REF BlTCH THAT WAS ROUGH
I'd argue the show does have some messaging, but it isn't deep which is nice.
Panty and Stocking are angels that are dirty and sinful, meanwhile Scanty and Kneesocks are prim and proper despite being demons. Stereotypes regarding angels and demons are flipped with the main girls of the show, and it's a nice change of pace from usual portayals of angels and demons. It also is a great commentary on how being born into a certain path doesn't mean you'll live up to the standards, or WANT to.
To answer whether it's worth the investment or not my answer is no. Watch episode 1, then find the episode where the Demon twins appear then skip all the way to episode 12 and 13 for a Mauch streamlined experience
And the dub is so much better.
It's not offensive, it's lowbrow. And that's *fine*. It's subversive. It was subversive and edgy for it's time and it definitely is now considering how prudish western culture has gotten with the hard right shift and culture war nonsense going on in wider American culture.
I dont believe that panty and stocking was a real show made by a real person
it is NOT more offensive then south park lets bfr
Helluva Boss if it was good
As a PASWG fan, the fact you're comparing south park as a "PBS Kids special" to Paswg is just blatantly FALSE. It's obviously that you've never seen a single episode of South Park because it blows paswg out of the PARK when it comes to offensive humor
P&S was quite literally concieved by the very drunk evangelion writers which somehow by some mystic force makes it the stupidest funniest shit ever
reminder: the people who made the whole plot of the show. They were drunk.
Gainax would be proud
I love this show tho ❤❤❤
Rage bait is kinda fuckin dumb
New cyberpunk anime isnt coming out soon so Studio Trigger/GAINAX had to remind people what peak looks like
Where can you watch this?
