My Melody & Kuromi|What’s your favorite scene?|Director of Photography Kosuke Ugajin
I’m Ugajin Kosuke,
Director of Photography. I was in charge of planning
the shooting methods and lighting setups. The episode I want to highlight is episode 11, where all the rubble collapses and scatters, leaving My Melody and Kuromi behind. That’s the key scene of the episode. Sorry. I didn’t have the courage
to eat the cookie. But I wasn’t lying
about what I said just now. It’s a crisis scene. Kuromi, My Melody’s best friend,
gently speaks to her. It’s a precious moment
where we can truly hear Kuromi’s real feelings, beyond the usual rivalry between the two. In contrast to this heart-wrenching scene, a magnificent view spreads out before you. I thought it was a great and impressive scene, with a special atmosphere
that combines tranquility and dynamism. We set up this scene in separate layers. The small islands
were actually attached to clear glass, and we carefully animated their fall
frame by frame to simulate gravity. We were on a tight schedule, so we used a variety of
compositing techniques to shoot the scene. However, we discussed in a meeting
whether we should continue that approach or whether we could be
more particular about the shooting method. About a year or two ago, I came across a picture book that inspired me, and I immediately remembered that I wanted to try
something similar in this scene. It’s an incredibly beautiful picture book
that uses layered cut paper in a single frame, and I wanted to reference that technique. I knew it was going to be challenging, but the team was full of creators eager to take it on. A shared passion for creating this visual
brought everything together, and we poured our energy into the scene
with a Let’s do it! spirit, even on a tight schedule. I believe we succeeded in placing
the actual objects and conveying what we wanted, which made the scene feel very convincing. It was much harder than I expected. One of the beauties of stop motion animation
is that it captures the space that truly exists on set. For example, hanging a green towel
and suddenly seeing it as a mountain, or discovering that unexpected materials can be
transformed into something new. It’s like we reimagine and cherish the space. It was incredibly rewarding to create a scene
that makes us think, Wow, this is fun! I feel it really embodies the quality of footage
created by dedicated creators. I’d be delighted if audiences watched it again, knowing that this was all shot in-camera,
in one take, without any compositing.
