My Melody & Kuromi|What’s your favorite scene?|Lead Prop Maker & Animator Ikuko Iwatsuki

I’m Ikuko Iwatsuki,
Lead Prop Maker and Animator. I also worked in Creative Development. My favorite scene is in episode 3,
where Flat puts sugar in a mixing bowl, sets it on a rubber band, stretches the band, passes the bowl to Piano, and then she catches it perfectly. Looks like our new creation
Will be a success again! We’ll be sure to take first place
At the sweets contest! Mee-eh! The camera work
in this scene was really challenging. In this film,
we decided to move the camera by hand. I hadn’t really done that much before, so I practiced all night to get it right. During the development stage, we explored the film’s world and considered
which props we’d actually need on set. For the kitchen utensils, I discussed with the prop sculptors
and we decided on colors that would look cute
when My Melody holds them. Normally, a spoon would be silver, but that color didn’t suit this world. When I had My Melody hold
a silver spoon, it looked too shiny, too realistic, and not very cute. So I decided to make it light blue. All of the metal utensils
ended up being colored light blue. The most challenging part was the strawberries. To match real strawberries, I first made them bright red, fresh, and shiny, and then had My Melody hold them. But it was not what I expected. They didn’t look cute or tasty at all, and I realized that being too realistic
just didn’t work. So, we decided to create colors
that better fit the world of the film. We tried out different shades of blue
and adjusted them little by little. We made many strawberries
and discussed finding the best color. Finally, we decided on
a pastel rose colored strawberry with white achenes instead of black. That was the perfect match. They look red in this world. All the painting was done by hand, with a touch of white pain
brushed on top to give them a soft, gentle look that makes you want to eat them. Actually, Kuromi’s Dorayaki in that close-up scene
was made with real ingredients. Mari Miyazawa, a bento (boxed lunch) artist,
worked on the scene. She used real sweet red bean paste
and real pancakes, and worked hard on getting the baked pattern
on the top pancake just right. She baked them in a small frying pan, and she said it was hard to get them
to form a nice, plump shape. Dorayaki wouldn’t normally be baked
to look like this. Since they dry out if left out, she wrapped each one in plastic wrap and brought them out during shooting. She said she baked a lot of Dorayaki. I think that’s a surprising detail. For this film, we were asked to create
a variety of materials for its world. For example, we brought sparkly effects
to life using beads. We added cute little touches like that, so I hope you enjoy the handmade feel of the beads
and the texture of all the materials. Many creators worked on
bringing these tiny details to life, and I’m truly grateful to all the staff
who made it possible.
