My Melody & Kuromi|What’s your favorite scene?|Shuhei Yamada (Sanrio Company., Ltd)

I’m Shuhei Yamada from Sanrio,
the Executive Officer and Head of the Design Division. I made sure to convey not only
the physical characteristics of My Melody and Kuromi but also their spirit and
the message behind them to the production team, so we could create an experience
that truly moves the audience. My favorite scene is from episode 7. I tear up every time I watch it, and it’s the one that sticks with me the most. So you thought it was impossible for us
to win the contest on our own? Well… Then what was all that time
we spent preparing together even for? I’m sorry. I wish you’d believed in us,
your longtime friends, instead! The cute worldview suddenly changes to
something serious, with an indescribably sad expression
I’ve never seen before, and Kuromi’s panicked, unsure of what to do. It was incredibly engaging. I’ve seen Director Misato’s previous films. and noticed some dark elements in them. I was curious how those elements
would work with our characters, what kind of chemistry would emerge, and what interesting new things could be created. We often tend to focus on
the positive or cute moments in our designs, so we rarely depict
negative moments or expressions. But this time,
because the story is so dramatic, the production team captured
the characters’ deepest emotions and the expressions that go with them, which truly impressed me. If we had focused
only on the characters’ cuteness, we could never have shown their negative moments. As you know,
the characters are living beings. By revealing sides and expressions
that they don’t usually show, audiences can discover
new aspects of these characters. This makes the characters feel more relatable, so the audience can connect with them even more. Even Sanrio employees would probably be surprised. They’d be like, I never knew My Melody could make
those expressions! How cute! When we created the motion references, the director acted out the characters,
imagining how they would move, and then used the video as a reference
to animate them. I found that truly fascinating. The director did his own research
and stretched his imagination to think about how My Melody and
Kuromi would move. He even said he read every single story
in the Ichigo Shimbun (Strawberry News). I was so inspired by him that I remember bringing stuffed animals
and mascots to the studio, prepared to answer any requests or
questions the director might have. I think it was great that we could clearly express
what we wanted to do and then have time to discuss
how to make it happen. This is an animated series
with such a dramatic storyline. We also explore the relationship
between My Melody and Kuromi in more depth, so I hope the audience will pay close attention.
