NTCB: The Shy Hero and the Assassin Princesses S1 EP 3 “The Shy Hero and the Lovers’….” Review
Hello you wonderful people and welcome to another episode of Not Too Comic Book. This week show we’re talk about TV shows that are adaptations of comic books. For today’s episode, I’m going to talk about The Shy Hero and the Assassin Princesses season 1, episode 3. Lot of really interesting things went down in this episode. So, let’s break it down. So, this is kind of like a pseudo date episode in a lot of ways because it’s now like the next day and Seal kind of botched her chance at it. So now it’s another rock paper scissors to decide uh who goes next and it’s Goa’s chance. They also made the decision going forward this will be the order of things. Seal Goa and then um Anime and then obviously it repeats itself over and over, you know. So, but either way, Goa is trying to go into her honey trap face because obviously that’s kind of like the main weapon in her repertoire is like she’s going to try and use this date as sort of reconnaissance to learn as much about the hero to see like I guess what best works against him, what strategy she could use to like utilize to kind of take him out, you know, in the future. So, she’s spiking his food and his drinks, uh, trying to hit him with any status effect she can, but none of them work. Uh obviously Toto is so um you know he tried to be like he you know he can he can plan it out in his head but it’s just the act of like you know trying to be suave and cool out you know rose and mouth being like oh like you know this is lovely because someone lovely like you made it for me or ordered it for me but he can’t get the words out so he’s just quiet and just awkwardly trying to smile repeatedly and she’s trying over and over again and nothing’s working and she becomes disheartened and just for a little bit in the episode we get a glimpse of what seems to be Goa’s past and she has this thing where it’s like if I had to compare it to anything just recency uh stuff in my head she kind of gives me Mona vibes from Madaka Kora I was impervious to my charms in the regards of there’s a deep-seated need to be loved obviously for different reasons because Monus she’s always been loved and so she’s kind of grown a complex about it where it’s kind of like I need to be loved by everyone because like what is my life kind of without that whereas Goa never really had it seems like she was alone from a very young age and so she’s talking to Toto and she’s like do you love me she’s like please love me please don’t leave me because I guess maybe from a young age like no one cared about her like maybe she was abandoned by her parents whatever the case may be she was alone so her being so like oh I want to make people love me it’s kind of this way of like feeling filling the void inside of herself, but she’s kind of going about it the most like I’m going to force you to love me and make you submit into loving me rather than kind of being natural. Because I think for her, she almost has this deep-seated fear like no one could ever naturally love me, so I’m going to make you love me. It’s interesting timing, too, because obviously the latest episode of Sakamoto Days, uh, we kind of get a little bit of Dump’s backstory and there’s a little bit of a parallel you can draw there. So, it’s interesting. But then, you know, uh I didn’t know what he was doing initially, but when Toto bites his hand and he’s just like, “No, like you are you, uh, Seal and Anam, uh, Anam are like more important than my own life.” And it’s not till Goa points out like, oh, he bit his hand so that he wouldn’t like so he wouldn’t faint from what she was saying. Because for him, he’s like, I can see how distressed she is. I want her to know like I will do whatever it takes to like protect you. I will never hate you. I will never abandon you. And obviously that means the world to her and she realizes later on like oh yeah like when she says something next that kind of makes him finally pass out she’s like the lengths he was willing to go for her sake she appreciated it. And so it changes her dynamic with him a little bit. still like I’m going to be aiming to kill you, but I am going to approach just a little differently because you did kind of make my heart go flutter beforehand cuz like not only did my status effects not work on you, my powers didn’t work on you in episode one. So, but she’s going to be approaching things differently and even Seal and Anem are like do those two actually get closer? It’s almost like did they actually go on a real date? And it’s like in a way they did. But um next up is Anime. it’s her shot uh to take a well shot at Toto and the others are kind of like like especially so she’s like oh I’ll prep get preparations ready for my shot next episode and next day and they’re like she’s like oh they’re so quick to believe I won’t get this dumb it’s like I’m I’m taking them down. So although while that’s happening, let’s shift over to Seal and Anime where they end up going for sweets, which we already knew that like one of her main things was like, “Yo, I want to go out there and taste all these different sweets.” When it comes to Seal, she has probably a bigger sweet tube than Van Arcride. Uh he’s the main protagonist of the uh Trails through Daybreak games, or rather Corono Kasseki games, the Calvert arc in the uh Trails franchise, Kasseki franchise. But yeah, just no, he’s I mean, he’s a guy that has like gets like thrown in his face all the time how much of a sweet tooth he’s got and how people can kind of bribe him that way because I love that Seal is like, “Right, you’re not going I had all those treats yesterday, so you’re not going to take me to a place and try to bribe me with it.” But she’s like, “Yo, there’s this secret menu thing.” And she’s like, “All right, bet.” And goes and it’s like, “Oh, like how about we try this?” But anime, no, it was a seal. Was like, I’m not trusting you because I’m Oh, I’m like, I’m going to let my guard down and let you poison me or you put something in my food. She’s like, I’ve got magical like guards up to prevent stuff like that. But she’s like, oh, but you don’t know what my skill is and so you don’t have a preparation for that. But it kind of plays into the notion that they haven’t really leaned into it too much. Obviously, they scuffled about it in episode one, not as much in episode two, but the whole like, well, if I wipe you guys out, that leaves me to have all the chances to wipe out Toto. So, it’s like, right, you’re going to wipe you’re going to remove us from the board just so you can have your shot. So, we’re always going to have to keep our guard up. Like, anime hasn’t really tried to wipe them out, but you know, Seal’s kind of like little like, oh, you you’re the deceptive type. You put on this bubbly personality, but you can be as deadly as poison. Uh, but I love that the guy’s like, “Yo, can you guys stop it?” And they’re like, “Well, we’re not being loud. We’re not causing disturbance.” He’s like, “No, we’re literally robbing this place and you’re over here eating.” I’m like, I love that whole bit. And then the boss comes in, Zack, and he’s like, “Yeah, you must have heard of me. I’m a former B-ranker.” But it’s like, “No, never heard of you.” He’s like, “Oh, you must be must have been a big deal for you to have gotten to a B rank considering there’s not that many of them.” But yeah. Yeah. He immediately gets outmatched. Him and his goons immediately taken down. Uh well, he gets immediately taken down by Seal who’s like her magic’s able to manifest things. Um at one point she summons essentially like a giant hammer to knock him out and then Goa has all of his uh men in a trance. So immediately takes them out and it’s like cool turn them in for a bounty. You guys at this shop could you know use it to pay for the repairs. But it’s like oh like allow us to serve you dinner. But the problem is like well then they then this would all go back to Toto finding out how powerful that we are. It’s so interesting because they don’t want Toto to know how powerful they are. But I think all three of them have kind of underestimated just how strong he is and what he’s fully capable of. We’ll get to that when we get to Anime’s side of um side of the episode. But they kind of well Goa wipes their memory and then they kind of move on or at least like fuzzies up their memory. So they kind of forget about Goa and Seal and they leave. On the other side of things, Anemone was saying like, “Oh, we got to collect these medical herbs herbs for uh Seal and uh Goa because they kind of got stomach aches or whatever.” I thought the irony was going to be like, “Yo, when you actually do get back, they actually have stomach aches because of the sweets or whatever.” But turns out that’s not the case. Um, well, I guess it kind of still works out in the end because of the condition they’re in at the end of the episode, but we’ll get to that in a second. But the problem is like at least like Seal and Goa, in particular, Goa specifically, can really like drag on a conversation. Granted, she wasn’t able to always get stuff out of Toto, but she’s a lot more of a talkative person because Anemone is kind of like the not the best conversationalist. So, that’s just who she is personalitywise. But then you also have Toto who’s like very bashful and introverted in that capacity and he can’t really form conversations. So they’re kind of two sides of the same coin just for different reasons. And so it’s like yeah awkward silence. And he tries to talk to her like okay what are your hobbies? And she’s like oh go uh money and booze. And then she was like, “Shit, I’m supposed to be keeping up a front.” Because what makes it harder for her is like she has to she’s not a conversationalist person regardless. But on top of that, she has that extra pressure of I have to keep up this priestly like appearance and the way I talk, so I can’t really beat me. So it’s an extra effort she has to put in. And she’s like, “Oh, what are your hobbies?” He’s like, “Uh uh lifting weights.” And she’s like, “Is that all he does?” And just goes back to awkward silence. I’m so curious. I think like if she was probably brutally honest, uh Toto probably wouldn’t think too less of her. If she were like, “Yo, money and booze.” He’d be like, “Oh, okay.” But once again, it’s it’s got to uh coincide with his uh with um with her priestly appearance. But it’s also like you want to all three of them have to appear to be like, “Oh, the maidens that need saving because it makes him drop his guard around them a lot more.” So that’s him playing like the damsel in distress angle up for that purpose. But either way, um, she asked a little bit more about Toto. In fact, asks about the scar on his face, which he hesitates to talk about. And he ultimately says like it was from a monster. He’s like, “I’ve lost a lot in my life.” He’s like, “My home, my family, my confidence.” And she’s like, “Oh, do you want to get revenge?” He’s like, “No, I want to work the way work up to getting my confidence back.” Because for him, he’s like, if I can get my confidence back, maybe then I can finally push myself forward to believing in I survived for a reason that there is a reason I’m still here. So that’s kind of really sad to know. Like he almost feels like I if I have more confidence in myself, maybe I can find a reason to kind of alleviate some of the survivors guilt that he potentially has for whatever happened, which is like interesting. Um, which she has that remark where she’s like, “Well, it’s better to have lost something than basically had nothing at all.” So, she kind of has no pity for him. It’s like, “Oh, that’s kind of sad.” But also, she’s like, “Right, I came from not having anything.” I kind of feel like Goa might be in the same boat as well. Um, Seal might be the only one of the the quartet that kind of has something, but obviously like they have what she wants, a lot more freedom, you know, and without like the expectations kind of bogging her down. So, it’s a little bit of like the grass is always greener on in some capacities. And I’m sure they’re not really viewing each other like that because they don’t know enough about each other like that. But as an audience member, you get to kind of see those parallels that might not be what the show or or rather the series is trying to make, but it’s just kind of an interesting thing to think about. Either way, she knocks Toto, you know, makes Toto embarrassed and unconscious and she straps a very particular bomb to him. Basically, it grows bigger and bigger based on the level of the person, and she’s like, “Oh, it’s going to get this big, but then proceeds to get even more massive.” And she’s like, “What do I do about this? Cuz the bomb is so big, I won’t even be able to escape the explosion.” She cuts it off of his chest and then has him throw it and he does and it ends up blowing up pieces of a mountain and also rips his clothes apart because he blocks the blast for her and she recognized like holy crap your clothes are ripped up but you are perfectly fine. It’s like even if it was like not that far away, the explosion still managed to kind of reach over here and you managed to still block it. So for her it’s like oh I got to re-evaluate just I mean for one the bomb to get that big and even then that wasn’t even full size. I cut it before it was even full. So who knows how big it would have gotten. That’s where I go into what I brought up earlier where I’m like I think they underestimate how powerful he is. So but you know at the end of the day though and she lets down the mask a little bit where a nominee is like oh actually I was actually freaking out there a little bit. She’s like, “Thanks a lot, Toto.” And kind of like, yeah, she let the mask slip and kind of was a little bit of herself kind of just naturally without putting on like the voice and like the pretense of being the priest and stuff. And you know, she was able to say that like wholeheartedly and genuine. It wasn’t like a facade. It was just really her saying it. So, uh, at the same time, uh, Goa and Seal were, you know, Seal was learning from Goa how to like mix stuff together to kind of make her like concoctions did not go well. You add in conjunction with that the bomb exploding at the same time when it did and they kind of being in the area. So, yeah, things went the way they went. So, but yeah, overall uh three strikes there out, but like I said, uh going forward, we’ll kind of uh circle back to Seal and see what she has planned for the next day. It’s going to be interesting to see like going forward like how many cuz like Seal got her entire episode. Last episode was hers whereas this one was Goa and um Goa and Anime sharing it. So, there’s probably going to be future episodes where some of them might get one dedicated episode, might get two or all three of them occupying the same episode. It’d be interesting if we ended up getting an episode where they got multiple attempts on them, like you you cycle through them again and again. I’m sure there’s some story line at some point, some story in the the manga or the future of the story that kind of does that because I think that’d be kind of fun seeing like them get multiple attempts throughout an episode and still fail in, you know, individually and keep cycling around over and over again. So, interesting interesting developments all around. I’m excited to see where the next episode ends up taking us going forward with all of this. But really, that’s all I wanted to talk about. Till the next time we meet, be happy, be safe, live life to the fullest, and enjoy it.
