CITY THE ANIMATION is an Instant Classic

Kyoto Animation’s 2011 adaptation of Kiarawi’s classic gag manga Nichi Joe is one of the most treasured and widely celebrated comedy anime of all time. It’s a remarkably impressive 26 episode barrage of lovable characters, stunning visuals, and often flawless comedic timing. The series works so well because of its sheer unabashed maximalism. everything is turned up to 11. And even when a joke has a long setup, its punchline smacks you in the face so hard as to leave you in urgent need of reconstructive surgery. Now, even though I love Nichi Joe and believe it’s a great series, I don’t think it’s perfect. It can sometimes feel stuck in a sort of awkward middle ground of unconfrontational insanity that can get a little tiring if you’re binging it. Both too wild and not wild enough to be either side of truly mesmerizing. Fortunately, Kyoani’s second adaptation of a Narawi manga City the Animation rectifies this complaint beautifully. And unlike Nichi Joe, based on the first two episodes that are out as of this writing, I don’t know if I would hesitate to call this show perfect. First off, I’d like to highlight what is the most obvious positive of the series, that being the drop deadad gorgeous art style. The show’s luminous candy colored environments and adorable fluffy characters with these deliciously thick outlines add up to a show whose unique brand of visual splendor is simply incomparable to any other anime which I can think of. Every 5 seconds, there’s some totally ingenious artistic decision that blows my mind to pieces. Even little things like how uniquely and adorably the sun is drawn. The series also has probably the best integration of 3D animation I’ve seen in any anime ever. It’s so unfathomably natural as to be nigh unnoticeable without close inspection while still remaining such a vital and necessary component to the show’s impeccable directing and shot composition. Now, in terms of humor, City is significantly less maximalist and surrealist in comparison to Niiji Joe. In fact, I don’t even know if I’d say comedy is the show’s main concern anymore than in a show like Kon. While it is still obviously a gag comedy series, the jokes are less in service of making you break into massive fits of laughter and more so just in service of making you smile and endearing you to the show’s fantastic cast of characters. If I were to pin any characters as the show’s leads, they would be the sassy tomboy Midori and her all but explicitly lesbian roommate Nikkura, who by episode 2 already have one of the most relatable, down-to-earth, and realistic friendships I’ve ever seen in an anime. Specifically, their conversation at the end of episode 1 regarding their futures made me pretty emotional with how uncannily it resembled a real life conversation I’ve had with a friend of mine in the past. However, despite how much I love the two of them and would probably consider them my favorite characters in the series, in my opinion the most interesting character in the series is Waco Izumi. Waco is quite possibly the most explicitly autistic character I’ve seen in an anime this decade. Now, this may come as a shocker to the viewers at home, but I am in fact autistic. And every single thing she does reminds me of something I do or have done quite frequently in my real life. God, I need that putty eraser so bad. patreon.com/isaba incorporated. Help me buy a putty eraser. But I’d like to circle back to that whole maximalism and surrealism point as although City might not go as crazy as Nichi Joe, that doesn’t mean it isn’t significantly more whacked out than the average comedy show. This is a world where a man can have a wine cork, leave an utterly massive and honestly extremely disturbing dent in his forehead, and seem only briefly mildly perturbed before coming to peace with the situation. However, once you get used to the fact that this world is a little kooky, it becomes a surprisingly relaxing watch. While literally a gag-based comedy series, the show feels more spiritually akin to a slice of life series to me. and how the primary joy of the show is just spending time around with these instantly captivating, likable, and relatable characters. All in all, we’re two episodes deep, and in my eyes, City the Animation is already shaping up to be something of a masterpiece. It’s been a good while since I’ve gotten this much enjoyment out of a currently airing anime, and I simply cannot wait to see where the series goes next. 14 years later and Kyoto Animation has finally followed up one of their most beloved shows of all time, Nichijou, with an adaptation of the author’s next manga, CITY. Does it live up to the hype? I think so.

  1. Good video!!

I'm loving the series so far as someone who adores the manga, it's such an interesting interpretation and I love it for that. I can't wait for the new episode today, it's adapting some of my favourite chapters!

  2. This show's art style looks great. I'll add it to my watch later list and check it out when it finishes airing.
My question is though, how can an anime be Anime of the Year if there is no waifu?

  3. It's been a LONG while since someone convinced me so thoroughly that I need to check out a currently running anime. Outstanding work as always :3

  4. Yeah this show has blown me away so far, it’s overflowing with personality and is probably the best looking TV anime I’ve seen this decade. Great video!
