L’Algérie des Chimères – Téléfilm Complet – Drame Historique – Aladin REIBEL , Olivier SITRUK – BSF

Good morning. Good
morning. I am an editor at the
newspaper L’Illustration. I am looking for Mr. Odilon Hubert, Member of Parliament
for Algiers. He is over there. THANKS. Mr. Hubert. Camille Bruyère. You are the first representative of
the French of Algeria in Parliament. My newspaper would like to dedicate an article
to you. On Algeria? No on you. On me. It’s a story of violence and blood. This is Shakespeare. Readers love it, sir. Do you believe? This is another country, young man from
another world, from another land where everything is exaggerated. The burning day, the freezing night
and that smell of goat and jasmine that catches your throat. Wait, I’ll take some notes. These are other religions,
other peoples. These are the Arabs. These Muslims, these fanatical warriors
who only love horses and weapons. That’s very good. And how do you want to explain to your
readers this new race of settlers? French, this
fabulously exotic blend made with Corsicans, Rouergats,
Ariégeois, Spaniards, Jews, Maltese? Let’s try anyway. Let’s start at the beginning,
shall we? When did you arrive in Algeria? In 1837, in Oran. With my friend Elie Toussaint. I was a military doctor, he
was an interpreter. It was the Algeria of chimeras. Everyone came with their own ideal, their own
idea of what was needed. make this new conquest. We had been fighting for seven years already. The guy on the black stallion.
It’s him. And that’s me. Jean-Baptiste Frémont who
will style his hair here. Abdelkader, the great Marabout. The colonel sent you to see how things
are going in the country. You will be served. The rookies will
teach you about Africa. No one shoots until
I give the order. Pass on the instructions. I’ve been campaigning in this fucking place
for three years. and I haven’t killed an arbi yet. If you shoot, it’s the disciplinary
battalion, is that what you want? What a bastard! Shit! Damn your mother’s religion! Let him die, doctor. Take care of our wounded instead. He is a man like you and me. Like you,
maybe, not like me. Naive, the rookie, huh? If you continue like this, you
will not live long in this country. They are madmen. You, the interpreter. Ask the one over there where
they spent the night. Who fed them? Who
gave them asylum? And if they eat, put a
bullet in his head? Tell him. Let’s go quickly. And him? Take him away. We’ll show him what
I’m made of. The savages! Raze this damn village. How many more do we need? Cut down the trees,
burn the crops! Let them die, let them die! Come on. Bring them all with me! Women
too? I said take everything on board, lieutenant.
Women and children too. Why women? Among the Arabs, women
are sold and bought like cattle. They even make slaves
of the ugliest ones. The raid. Lieutenant, we didn’t
invent it, they did. And remember this, the Blues,
the Arabs only respect one thing is strength. Fanatics. They only understand that: strength. Imagine our anguish. Elie and I were Saint-Simonians. We didn’t come to Algeria for
that, but to marry the East and the West. As we had sworn a few months
earlier in Paris. You are now brothers in Saint Simon, the apostles
of the new Christianity. We Saint-Simonians, followers
of our master’s theories. The late Count of Saint-Simon,
remarkable economist and philosopher, We want to build a new society
based on progress. Engineer, polytechnician or banker,
we will wear our message around the world. Let’s go to Africa. Let’s go to the regency of Algiers where
the flag of France now flies and let us all swear together to realize
the marriage between spiritual values of the East and the material
values of the West. We swear. We swear, swear. Hello Ferdinand. Mother, You know Ferdinand de Lesseps. Mr. de Lesseps? He will leave for Egypt with Father
Enfantin to build a canal there. which will connect the Mediterranean
to the Red Sea. A canal? My
God, but for what purpose? This way, the boats will no longer need
to go around Africa. to go to India. And here are the Pereire brothers,
a family of very rich bankers. Mother, I present to you my
friend Elie Toussaint. We are leaving together for Algeria. He was appointed Arabic interpreter and I was
assigned as a military doctor in Oran. and we will build a new world there.
Where all men will be equal without
distinction of race or religion. Among the Barbary pirates.
My God. Mother, won’t you sit down? Pardon. You never told me about this friend. This
is a new one. Allow me to congratulate
you, Mrs. Hubert. Your son said is a deserving
boy and a zealous apostle of our good cause, Saint-Simonian. I tremble for him, sir. And why? Are you sending him to Algeria,
where there is war and cholera? Of course. But it is an exhilarating mission
to awaken sleeping Islam and create a new society. My only son among the Arabs. We have an appointment with the Colonel. He is busy at the moment. THANKS.
We’ll wait here. As you wish. You knew that. Was Colonel Lamoricière also
a Saint-Simonian? It doesn’t surprise me. Polytechnician, apostle of progress. Bye. Bye. Interpreting officer, Elie Toussaint. Staff
Physician, Odilon Hubert. Rest, I know. Father Enfantin told me about
your arrival in Algeria. Welcome to this beautiful country
where there is so much to do. Come with me, I’ll explain
the situation to you. We are occupying. The ports of Algiers, Beaune and Oran. Initially, we intended to be content
with occupation of this maritime facade. Like
the Turks. This is not quite what we have
seen since our arrival. My Colonel, We
are waging a war of conquest. and extermination against the Arabs. I know,
some Parisian newspapers even write that we have become more barbaric
than the barbarians. Alas, it
is true. But whose fault is it? Abd-el-Kader has raised the flag
of holy war against us. He swore to throw us into the sea. He is imposing a cruel and merciless
war on us throughout the country. After all, we are the ones
invading his territory. We are dealing with
religious fanatics. We must subdue them, otherwise
they will chase us away. and the English will take our place. The problem is that the government in
Paris does not know what it wants. Already ten different governors general
in six years, ten. We don’t have enough men to finish
this once and for all. Barely 30,000 men against
3 million Arabs across a territory as big as France, that’s
ridiculous. Yet, for us Saint-Simonians, the objective
is clear. We want to help the Arabs, protect their
language, protect their religion. We want to let them manage their
own affairs. and we also want to help them gradually
assimilate the values of our Western and modern civilization. Excuse me, Colonel, but. What is the difference with colonization? The land, all that. We must leave
the land to the Arabs who are the natural peasants of this country. It’s up to us to build the factories,
the railways, the roads. It is in this spirit that I created
the first Arab offices on indigenous territories. It is also in this spirit that I created
the first Zouave regiment. with Muslim volunteers who are today
our brothers in arms. Colonel, may I volunteer for
a Zouave regiment? Later, I have other, more important
tasks to entrust to you. Bugeaud arrives in Oran next week with
the mission to seek peace with Abd-el-kader. Speaking Arabic, all that. Can I pretend to be Egyptian? GOOD. So you will settle incognito
in the native city. Abd-el-Kader has a
secret representative. You will establish contact with him. You want to make me a
spy among the Arabs? No, no, no. It’s all for peace. For
a good cause. As for you, Hubert. You will take care of this cholera epidemic
which is causing havoc terrible among our troops. And even more so among the population. I know, Hubert will also
take care of everyone. Come on, come on, dare!
NOW ! Come on, come on! Come
on ! Yasmine. Yasmine. Yasmine. The
girl who breathes. SO ? Be careful, doctor. The other doctors before
you caught cholera. They are dead. And
you, Sister Philomène. God protects me. Leila. Let me introduce you to Leïla. She is one of our orphans. She speaks Arabic and French.
Alright. Hello, miss. Hello,
Doctor. Dehydrates. Tell him to drink plenty
of boiled water. If we don’t say you, we say Tu. Remember, this film had a big impact on me. If you want to learn Arabic.
I can give you lessons. This bandage needs to be changed. He is disgusting. I’m letting you know that I’ll be attending
your lessons with Leila. Why, my sister? You don’t trust me? I need to learn Arabic too. Your Spanish convent has been established in
Oran for more than 200 years. You still don’t speak Arabic. I have the practice, but
not the theory. Cover it. He looks pretty bad. I am very discouraged, doctor. I can’t stop them from dying. I prayed to God every day. But medicine is making progress. We already know that the disease is transmitted by
water and we will end up well by finding a cure. Try turpentine. Leila took Tina’s life away. Your protégé is amazing. Poor
city. His parents. They were killed by the Arabs in front of her
own eyes when she was very small. His family came from Alicante, Spain. Yet she looks Arab and speaks
the language. Because his Grandmother was a Mama Rossa. A long time ago,
a boat carrying ten of our Spanish sisters shipwrecked
here on the coast. Our sisters, they were all sold
as slaves to chiefs Kabyles and Turkish janissaries. And since the mother is superior, she
was called Madre Maria Rosa. All the children born from these forced marriages,
the Kabyles have them called Mama Rosa. There’s no point laughing.
Leave me sad. Sorry, my sister Leila. We raised her like our own daughter. Chouf, chouf Angèle, Doctor. Or the others? He
needs it. Explain that the kids
need to drink. A lot, huh? It
will only make you pee. He said may Allah bless you and
that you are a good man. Go get a stretcher.
Hurry up. You’re welcome. She would have gone to Gucci. She’s cool, but. Wallah, that.
Go too far. Shukrane! Do you want women? Allah! Allah! And me? Finally your colleague. You already had this one yesterday. She’s no longer a Virgin Mary, you don’t have. Too much of Acadia Oulad Naïl. Hamidou Hadja.
Quite special. Let me pass. Let me pass. Pardon ? Yes, she is there. Actually.
What the hell are you doing here? Are you going to catch me in your uniform?
Yes, that’s it. Everyone knows who you
are in Arab life. I’m coming to see if what
they’re saying is true. That you wallow in brothels, that
you have completely lost head and forgot your mission. This is false. The colonel told me to integrate. I fit in. You can’t imagine the delights
of the Orient where everything is made for the enjoyment of man. From childhood, these
women are trained to satisfy all our whims. Said Long. I marry the Orient every day. Do you want to taste it?
Are you kidding me? You’ll come, you’ll see. It is not quite the mystical marriage planned
by our brothers in Saint-Simon. The colonel sent me. He hasn’t heard from you
in over a month. You’re going to end up before a court martial. I found a way to get in touch
with Abd-el-kader. Trust me. Stay. Now to. Do. Any special things? Hmm. Hmm.
Come on, come on, Dare! Red Nose is showing now. Abdelkader Raja Cherif Coat. Michel
Albert. Their leader did what he hoped we would do. In the back. Bad luck. For. YOU. Salam aleykoum. Aleykoum salam. I know who you are. I know who you are too. Why are you spying on us? I don’t spy. I bring peace. We too want peace. But peace is worthless without freedom. France is ready to respect your freedom
if you stop the war. It’s not me who decides. So let it be known. The
one who decides. That decides. Yes, I know, Allah is a convenient excuse. Sometimes we can help him a little, right? I will try to help him. Inshallah. Inshallah. Hi Hi! Hi! Hi
hi hi! Tell me. Tell me a little about Baya. She is beautiful.
Yes, I know, I saw her. She is kind. Yes. Yes, all the women of the bousbir.
And you still want that one? This one is not the same. The hands. Calloused. Yassine continues with. A tirade on Nadia Le Liberia. Salam aleykoum. Aleykoum
Salam. I am definitely the girl of his dreams. He sends me to tell you that Emir Abdelkader, the
leader of the fighters of the faith, is ready to negotiate peace. THANKS. You bring me great news. You speak French very well. My father didn’t have a son,
so he wanted me to learn to read and write like a boy. I have. To.
There, there there! I have to go. Abek Abek. It means I love you. Sorry, I love you. It’s a thing. Oh yes. This might be useful to you. Yes, but more sensual. With Nabuke. Yes, Nabuke again. Hello everyone! I have great news. There’s
something new! I’m in love. God my mustard Leila. Doctor Boy.
Taught. Deprisa. Lover ? Mad. So what do you say? Isn’t that what you think?
Hey, is this serious? She is the daughter of great aunts. Great aunts. Large
families. She is beautiful.
Intelligent. Who is it. Sacado’s daughter.
Baia? Do you know her?
Alright. We studied together at the sisters’ house.
But that’s amazing. Leila Are you going to help me? So you’re going to go see her and you’re going to
tell her that I love her, that I want to marry her. Do you want to marry an Arab woman? So what? I
won’t be the first. The wife of the nephew of the general
who commands in Constantine is an Arab. Not a Kabyle. Leila, you know her. So you’re going to go see her and
tell her that I love her. Please, I beg you, do this
for me. There are old women here who
arrange marriages for that. If she’s your friend, she’ll listen to you. Okay, I’ll be the matchmaker
for you. And your mission.
Ah! Second big news. Abdelkader is ready to negotiate. I notified Lamoricière
who warned Bugeaud. There will be a truce. You don’t know the Arabs? It’s a ruse before
resuming the fight. You’re the one who talks like that, Leila. Do you have Arab blood in your veins?
No way. Kabyle blood. I am not a Muslim. I
am a Christian. Anyway. Religion matters here. She is stronger than blood, stronger
than anything. Do you think he really loves me? He has known so many women. And you, do you love him? I don’t know. My father wants to give me one
of his old friends. I know it. He’s the man of your life. All I know is that I would like to be
his wife, to have children with him. It’s recent. You know, in our country,
it’s the men who decide. My father will never leave
me an infidel. That can be arranged. Eli adores you. I don’t even know if he loves me or not. I’m the one who has to kiss him. Go see old Zora, so she can
give you the love potion. Our only filter is this, this and
this. Layla, you sound like a prostitute. But that’s what we have here. They can sell their daughters
like sheep. Don’t say that. My wife is the servant of man and the
mother of his children. I will choose my husband on my own. Hmm hmm. Besides, I’ve already chosen. And
you love him? I want it. I will
have it. So she loves you. She wants to marry you, but
on one condition. I agree. Her father
will only give her to a Muslim. It’s off to a bad start.
But no. There is a solution. He’s
becoming a Muslim? Why not ? Yes, you go before the imam, you say
Allah is great, Muhammad his prophet. And that’s it, you’re a Muslim.
No. Why not ? I had already
thought about it. Islam is a beautiful religion. No priest, no bishop, no
Pope Diouf. And you all alone face to face. After all, God is the
same for everyone. Yes, but circumcision? Circumcision? Don’t worry, the hairdresser will cut your
penis straight and clean. as beard and hair. And what’s
more, it’s an English razor. But truce, but truce. Are you sure you want to get circumcised? Is it obligatory to be a Muslim? Don’t you want me to do it at
the hospital instead of this butcher? First of all, he’s not a butcher, he’s
a hairdresser. It’s worse. You don’t know the right words to say. It is still a part of me
that I give to God. Do you want me to come with you? It’s not nothing. Holy Elijah. Deep down, I envied him. He threw himself into every
adventure, while I, As a good student of the Jesuits,
I weighed the pros and cons that I I could never make up my mind. She is here. Should I marry him? She was beautiful, she fascinated
me, but she scared me. Like this country. Aaaaaaaahhhhhhhh.
Ouch! Ouch, ouch, ouch! That’s not classy at all. Jealous of Kigali. Now you are my brother. Peace
to me. The Head. Start. Brute tried three times. It’s not for lack of warning you. We’re
going to the hospital. I’ll give you a clean bandage. I am a Muslim like you. What you promised me. If you are a Muslim, I will give you my daughter. Will you give it to me now? I gave my word. I’d
like to. Hamdullah If the uncles agree. They have something to do with it.
Uncles are the old ones, the wise ones. They decide for the family. It’s
bullfighting. Tradition equates it with Muslim. Are you circumcised? Turn on. The cartridge pouch.
Chouf. Hey, I want a chouf! She goes Ding! Dong! What
are you making me do? She wanted hot baths. She will help him touch. Or to. To leave. Tara.
Ha! Ha! Ha! Ha!
Ha! Ha!
Ha! Ha! Ha! Ha! That’s it! The
Detailed Inspection is over. Do they agree? That’s very kind of them. I give you. Bye.
But the dowry must be paid. Oh yes. The dowry. How much ? 1000 francs! 1000
francs! All right. And 50 sheep. 50 sheep. Where do you want me to find them? Who do you buy them from? To me? If you want. Weldi. Brock. Bujeau has just signed a truce with Abdelkader
through the Treaty of Tafna. We recognize his authority over
two-thirds of Algeria. The emir set up his camp here, on
the Takdim plateau, between Mascara and the world of Ouarsenis. I’m worried, Hubert. Why, Colonel? This
is what you wanted. Everyone at home. And besides, it seems
he’s a loyal man. He cannot stand our presence
in Muslim lands. It’s a religious
issue, a sacred thing. And never forget Hubert, the
Emir is a prophet. At the same time as a man
of war and also a poet. Only Islam produces this kind of man. We sent a delegation
to him. He asked for a doctor for
his mother who is sick. So I had you appointed. Go to him. Try to gain his trust and
keep me informed. Every week. You can count on me. My
colonel. Come to dinner last night. Yes, Colonel. In the name of my master Emir Abdelkader, Prince
of the believers, defenders of religion. May
Allah protect him. I welcome you. I come, in the name of France, to
put my science at the service of the emir and his family. May Allah protect them. Our emir is sad. His mother, the very holy and venerated
Lalla Zorah, is seriously ill. If you succeed in curing her, her
son will shower you with gifts. I don’t need presents. If I succeed, your master’s
gratitude will be my reward. I am. Oh ! Oh ! Oh ! Oh
! Oh ! Oh ! Oh ! Oh ! Oh ! Oh ! Oh ! She has a fever like a horse. She often has attacks like this. It’s malaria. So we must rely on God. A new drug, quinine, has been discovered.
I made a potion from
cinchona bark. Sherby lyrics. Be careful, it’s very bitter. Mmm. A cookie? Ah
cool, that fits. The man in Dragonsoul. A guard. A cursed canine. Beautiful like Leibniz or Émile Moumni. The tarot. Salafi Dragons. Inshallah. Italics. Italics. He needs to drink. A sip every 2 hours and
then he’ll go. I will come back tomorrow. But there. I have talik. This is your house.
If you’re missing something, just ask. The Emir wants to see you tomorrow morning. I’ll come get you. Rest
in peace. Alora must not Mac Nam. Oh my God ! Bye! Bye life! Mrs. Lewis Hamilton. Fanny Rabbit Hole. In the room you’ll be. Back. Ya ya ya. There is full volume. François Yes, yes, that’s it. Bye. It
is. Owl ! Mrs. Nowell. You’re going to go to the French doctor. You take care of the house, the
cooking, the cleaning. Max: It’s nice here, said Mohammed. Curve the bars. A sweet
silence. A woman. The doctor is a spy
who monitors his every move. If he writes something, bring
it to me. Understood ? What will I get in exchange? She told you your uncle. Wants me in his harem. Your uncle is rich. If you do your job well, I will
find you a rich husband, a young or an old rich man,
as you wish. You are young and cute. It
will be easy. You have to evolve.
Niche or like Lino. Hhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh! Ha ha ha ha Ha! Ha! Ha! Ha! Ha! Ha! Ha! Ha! Ha! Ha! Ha! She will wear it. Complain, me. Also. Who are these prisoners? The leader of a rebel tribe. The webinars. Hhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh. Hhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh. A moment when I. You tell me, she’ll be there. Sarko! The dwarf shouts. Na na na! My friends or nothing. Me, it is. Like the dog. They are all here. To hell
with idiots! We will be there.
Like at school. Idem. And. Brush baby brush 6000
babies are born too much. So I try to put the items. On the dates. The rhythm bars with the same. Water heater. In fresh water. Nothing from nothing. Salam aleykoum. Read your Bible Al Walid. Welcome to our home. Sit down. I am happy to have been able to put the
science of France at the service of the mother, of the prince of believers. This is an example of what we
can bring to your country. It is an Arab who has. Invented.
Medicine. I intend to create a university and our
doctors will also be learned than those of the French. Why waste time when France
offers you the chance to jump? the centuries and enter with it into
the modern world of the marriage between the East and the West,
between France and Algeria, a new world could be born. We Arabs are not made to
sow wheat or build cities. We are nomads, sons of the wind. Nothing solid can
be built on wind. Nothing solid can be
built without God. But God is with me, and
I obey him alone. My religion forbids me from allowing
a single Muslim to live under the domination of a Christian. It is not about dominating you, but
about bringing you the benefits of civilization and progress. When God wants to destroy the ant,
he gives it wings full of joy and pride. She launches herself into the sky. So a little bird comes along and,
hey presto, gobbles it up. We will be friends if everyone stays at home. Our most precious asset
is freedom. Now, there is freedom and independence
only in holy war. Holy war never required
massacring the enemy. Like I saw it done to a fly. Now we are at peace. Come see me whenever you like. Wherever I am, you will be at home. Rabbit in the wild. SO. Madam,
yes. Mohamed. Ali. From our first, this is
for you. I cannot accept. I said a gift is a
serious insult. Ali. Ali.
Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh. Hhhhhhhhhh. Who is this woman?
A maid for you. And my servant Ahmed. He asked to serve in the armies of the
fighters of the faith. Nawel cooks better, you’ll see. Salam
aleykoum. Aleykoum Salam. Who is making fun. My name is Nawel. Do you speak French? Where
are you from? From Kabylie. My father worked for the French lieutenant
in the Arab bureau. The Emir’s soldiers came
to our village. They killed the lieutenant. My father. My
mother. Don’t worry, you’ll be treated
well at my place. For me, you are my father and my mother. Good night. Where
are you going to sleep next door? There is no bed. I sleep
on the floor. If you need me, you call me. Wait, stay a little. You smell good. Let me guess. Close your eyes. Pfff. Pffff. Good morning. So the coffee is Turkish, the milk
is goat’s milk and the bread is me. So, are you happy? I don’t want you to
kiss me like that. But you are my master.
I am yours. Hmmm.
So that’s Lib. Lib. Not
free. Lib. Lib. Yes. Nawelle was the master servant that
every man secretly dreams of. You dive into the captivating world of
Islam, made up of a mixture of nobility, of poetry and cruelty where
God comments on every gesture. I was far from everything, somewhere else. Without being able to imagine that it would
have an end and that it was only of a parenthesis in my life. The Emir returned this week from
a major expedition to the Sahara. You were right, Colonel. For two years, he has been taking advantage of this
false peace to impose his law. to all the tribes of Algeria. He thus raided and subdued Kabylie,
Ouarsenis, Titteri and now the Sahara. Will He ever succeed in making a
nation of these scattered tribes? If he does, it will be
against us. Or women say that the war with the
French will start again. I’m scared. If there is war, you
will leave and leave me. Of course. No.
I’ll take you with me. Rumor has it that hostilities against
the French will soon resume. The Emir now has a regular army
of 8,000 infantrymen, 2000 cavalry, 20 field guns
and 240 artillerymen. Added to this are about 60 zero zero zero irregulars,
all armed with French rifles. taken from our dead or our prisoners and
especially the English rifle sold by Her Britannic Majesty’s Consul. And Mr. Odilon Ellis. Oh ! Oh ! Oh !
I’m glad to see you. Me too. So, are you okay? Yes.
Sit down! Hey, you look great! Three
stripes! Well done
! But we didn’t warn you either! You are on the promotion board. Oh,
you know. Here I am far from everything. Be careful, someone is stealing a letter from you.
Come on, it’s Christmas! She takes my letters to the legation. Your maid? Do you trust him? Yes, well, it’s a little
more than my maid. This is my fiancée. Are you kidding?
No, I’m in love. It was about time I arrived.
You forgot Leila. But how naive you are, Odilon! They gave it to you to spy on you. That’s how it is with the Arabs.
We talk. Something else. You
want ? What are you doing here? I accompany the room commander. We came to see Abdelkader to try
to prevent the war from resuming. What’s going on? Our generals took Constantine and to
connect Algiers Constantine, they occupied a territory. Which Abd-el-Kader considers his own. Is he right or not? We are acting in bad faith, that’s
obvious. Wait for the Arabs, yes Abdelkader repeats everywhere that with God’s
help, he will reject the French at sea. After all, he’s at home, not us. If we leave, Algeria will
return to anarchy. And our marriage between
East and West? What do you do with it? But for that, peace is needed. freedom, equality for Arabs. Not forced marriage. Our generals only dream of conquests. They want to subdue the native. Believe me. Come back to Oran quickly, Leila is waiting for you.
And Baya. I didn’t tell you. I
am the father of a little boy. That’s not true, Ismail. He’s almost a year old already. And I hope you’ll be there
for the circumcision. Well, you can be sure of that. The French betrayed their parents. The Duke of Orleans and Marshal Valée passed
through the Iron Gates and violated my territory. It is an insult to our dignity. I wrote to the King of France, Philip. He didn’t even answer me. But Caliphate invented holy war. The whistling of bullets is more precious
to us than fresh water. This is a mistake. France is the strongest. She has soldiers,
cannons, boats. I’m not afraid. God is with me. My friends and I want freedom and
equality for all Algerians. as for all French people. Maybe, but your generals
dictate the law. Conquest is like salt water, the more you
drink, the thirstier you become. Whoever wins. Many men will die under
enemy bullets. It’s not bullets that kill,
it’s fate. The Muslim is happy to
die for his faith. Paradise is in the shadow of
swords, says the Quran. I chose the path of honor. The war will warn your people. Let no one say that I am taking
them by surprise. Camel will accompany you
to the French outposts. May God keep you and your family! I will never forget that
you saved my mother. May God one day guide your steps towards
a just and honorable peace. Farewell. Yo! Yo
yo yo. Yo! Yo! Yo!
Yo! Ouch! Ouch
ouch! Ouch! Ouch!
Ouch! Alex. Nawel. Nawel. Nawel. Party.
Do you know where she is?
She returned to the harem. What ? She has to go with me. You can’t imagine a Muslim
woman going to an infidel. I want to see her. She doesn’t want to see you. This
is false. She wants to leave with me. You are naive, Lieutenant Hubert. I installed it in your house
to spy on you. I don’t believe you. You’re
lying. She brought me your letters. 8000 infantry, 2000 cavalry,
20 cannons. You are well informed. Get well soon, Romy. You are a soldier. You should know that. A man who trusts a woman is no longer
a man but a donkey. Fight! You are the emir’s guest. He ordered me to bring
you safely. Allah ouakbar. Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah. For Muslims, the laws of
hospitality are sacred. You are my guest. You
are attacked, I defend you. I will remember it.
I owe you a life. Next time I meet you,
I’ll kill you. There is somewhere a sweet couscous with
milk, dates and raisins dry which is a pure marvel. Leila
eats with us. I see. It’s
a conspiracy. Odilon You have to know what you want. She’s the perfect woman for you. Don’t you like her? Yes,
yes, on the contrary. So Marie, you’re not
going to do like all the officers. singles from here who get together
with a fatma and who don’t dare to show it. Excuse me, I didn’t mean to. No, leave it, you’re right.
All that is over. Good. We’re talking politics.
Oh, stop. You’re not serious. Excuse me, I have to
go take care of Ishmael. I’m coming with you. Leila. I
wanted to tell you. What ? First, you have to. I have to confess something to you. Little Kabyle, I know. Elie
told me. What’s he getting involved in? And. You and me, it’s different. No ? So you. Would
you be ready? Ladies and gentlemen, I
raise my glass to the health of the captain. Hubert, who has just earned
a well-deserved third stripe. To the health of his charming wife,
head nurse of our hospital, whose beauty and competence will support
the brilliance her husband’s career. All our best wishes go out
to the newlyweds. Their union is celebrated
under the best auspices. In fact, our troops have just crushed
the regular forces at Mouzaïa of Emir Abdelkader who wanted to
provoke us into battle formation. It was a bad decision for him. His troops were annihilated thanks in particular
to the valiant spahis from my friend Colonel Youssouf. Ladies and gentlemen,
to love, to victory! I find you very optimistic,
General. Abd-el-Kader lost the war, but
he did not give up. He has moved on to guerrilla warfare
and continues to stir up the tribes. Here or there. Maybe, but believe me,
he lost face. So the part. And then it’s just
a matter of time. Bugeaud was appointed governor general. He arrives with a reinforcement
of 100,000 troops. So we can finally
go all out. In Paris, things are clear:
Algeria will now be and for still a French province. We are going to make this country
a modern country. What are they doing? There ? How do you find it? Stunning.
THANKS. Would you like something to drink? Yes.
Two granita coffees.
Two slushies, please. And where did you buy that? In a Jewish
store on Bab-azoun Street. It suits you very very well. THANKS.
Personally, I
prefer clothes orientals a little more mysterious. Remember that eroticism
feeds on mystery. I heard that Abdelkader was
20 kilometers from Algiers. It’s true. He was there. He raided Mitidja and disappeared
as if by magic. It’s his habit. I always said it wasn’t finished. This morning we attended the
Royal Commission for the development of Algeria. Talabot prepares its railway line between
Algiers and Blida. Fournel established a mineralogical
map of the country. Paris Coal Iron.
Hey, we’re late! We have an appointment at 12 p.m. Your cap. We. Waiting
for lunch. Yes. My respects, General. Colonization is stalling. What is the point of conquering land
if no one comes to occupy it? No one wants to move to a faraway
country that isn’t not yet entirely pacified. He will be, Lamoricière. It
will be. I bet you we’ll clean
up this scum. I’ll put what’s needed in it. But I don’t want to do this
for Swiss settlers. or ignorant and drunken Austrians. You are right, my general, to
exploit these immense territories and neglected by the nomads that are the
Arabs, We need large capitalist
companies with significant resources. This is the modern and effective
solution that we recommend. Hmm hmm hmm hmm. Ha ha ha ha ha.
Ha ha ha! Nonsense! I recognize here the hazy theories
of your Saint-Simonian friends. All dreamers and dreamers! Mmmmhhhh! Do you see, Lamoricière? I didn’t go to Polytechnique like you. I am a soldier and a peasant. I learned everything on my
farm in Limousin. Mitidja is not Beauce. May I respectfully point out to
you, General, that the Limousin Nor is it Mitidja? Imagine, Captain Toussaint, that
I had noticed it. So is Aratro. That’s my motto. By the sword and by the plow. Like Cincinnatus, the
Roman soldier-ploughman. I install my veterans here after their
year of service is over. Plow, horse, gun. I even get them a wife from
the natives. My Chief of Staff, who is now retired,
became mayor of Toulon. He picks up servants, widows,
single women for me. You understand me. Germaine. Do you agree to take Gustave as your
husband and to be faithful to him all life within our Holy
Mother the Church? Yes,
Gustave, do you agree to take Germaine? for wife and to be faithful to her all
life within our Holy Mother Church? Yes, I pronounce you united
in holy matrimony. Here are your wedding rings. The poor thing. Apparently she is an orphan. Who knows, maybe she will be happy. You bet! It’s a real lottery. Germain.
Do you agree to take it? That’s what I learned. Young people.
Faithful, all life. They only do five years of service. They are installed before the
end of their seven years. Yes.
I declare you united. I see. Not
the. Report. There
is a sacred. Good way to keep him from running away. So they are obliged to do
at least two years. And here are your wedding rings. Here is your title deed. A plow and a horse to plow and a
gun to defend yourself against the bastards. Madam, here is the key to your house. THANKS. All my best wishes for happiness and prosperity. Here is your title deed. A plow and a horse to plow and a
gun to defend yourself against the bastards.
Thank you, General. Madam, here is the key to your house. All my best wishes for happiness and prosperity. My friends! After having conquered this land in the name
of France, you will now cultivate it and
create a new homeland here for you and for your children. All my best wishes are with you. Ha! Ha!
Ha! Close the ban! SO. The question. Of the case. Arabs in general are being
robbed of their land. Let’s not exaggerate, he didn’t do anything like that. It is true that it is not with this
policy of small-scale plowing spoon that we are going
to make Algeria a new-beauce. If Abdelkader gives us time. The governor decided to send
three columns after him. He entrusted me with the command
of one of them. If I may, I’m not
sure I want to to participate in this hunt. I’m afraid you don’t really
have a choice. My dear all that. I have just received your respective assignments
to the young Duke of Aumale. who will command my friend
Youssouf’s column. You as his interpreter and you Hubert
as his doctor, The king’s son, eh? That’s rather flattering. I’m sorry to lose you, but it
will be good for your advancement. Colonel Youssouf.
Spotted. The family. She escaped us twice
in four days. But this time.
We have it. She is there, at the tagine well. The troops, the women, the children. How the hell do they
move so fast? I don’t know, Monsignor. This is amazing! Is Abdelkader with them? I didn’t want to approach for
fear of raising the alarm. And how many soldiers
guard the smala When. Abdelkader isn’t here? It
leaves about. 500 men to protect her. We have enough riders. Let’s go, let’s not waste any time. We might be better off waiting for the infantry
that is following us 3 hours away. Sound the start! Lieutenant! Monseigneur the Duke of Aumale has instructed me
to announce to you that he has captured the Smalah of Abd-el-Kader on May 16 at 12 p.m. We left at dawn with the cavalry
and around 12 noon, we came across her. An incredible spectacle, my general, which
I will never forget. By the way, my friend. By
the way. The African hunters went
around the smala to take it from behind and the spahis of Colonel
Youssouf attacked from the front. Immediately, there was chaos, panic,
every man for himself. Good, very good. And Abd-el-kader? He wasn’t there, General. My General, We
have captured 300 notables and leaders of war, their families, the sheep, the
horses, all the treasure Abdelkader’s war. A magnificent
haul. The Duke of Aumale almost lost his life there. She screamed. Albi. THE. Old karma roars and Nacatl Hardi begins, there, greeted Zeitoun and the World War Z. Love. Lienard Nathalie, Albi. Old Karma Rougerie Yannick Hardy MTS Amine. All the men who us. They were bad. Yann, Arlette, Albi. Are you coming, Hubert? So there, no more hope. Monsignor. Required. Lots of Jesus. She tells us with a smile on his face. When ? Guard. Guard
! Move aside! Aaaahhhhhhhhh! Ha! Ha! Ha!
Ha! Ha! Ha! Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh! If you spare the woman and
child, I surrender. Army. Take them away. Don’t move! Don’t move. You saved my life, Captain. What can I do for you ? Give me these three prisoners? They are yours. Right, left, Right Left Right. LEFT.
RIGHT.
LEFT. RIGHT.
LEFT. U-turn. RIGHT.
Introduce. Weapons.
His shoulder. Ahead. Walk. RIGHT.
LEFT. RIGHT.
LEFT. RIGHT.
LEFT. RIGHT.
LEFT. RIGHT.
LEFT. She wants to see you. She’s waiting for you outside. With bags of grain in the canteen. But my comrade. Why did you abandon me, Odilon? Abandoned. You’re the one who spied
on me and betrayed me. Did you believe it? I was sure of it. It was a camel who had me kidnapped,
who locked me in his harem. And the letters. It’s the only one he managed
to take from me. I came for that, Odilon. So you know. I didn’t betray you. Never. But you, did you doubt me? No. You didn’t have enough of me. This is your child. Our child. Aïssa. No one must ever know. Otherwise Hashem will kill him and me. I am his wife. He took me into his harem. He never asked me any questions. Amos is a good man, a good
husband, a good father. Isa and I belong to him. I just wanted you to know. Eli told me you’re married. Yes. Yes. Heiltsuk.
Yes. Ada. Not. Wrong. Not. AAA. AAA? AAA? AAA. I misjudged him. She’s a good girl. Yes. You belong to two very
different worlds. Is that you saying that? It’s not the same for me. Do you think a man can love several
women at the same time? Muslims are allowed four wives. There is always a favorite. It must happen sometimes that he loves
two of them, one as much as the other. He has it.
Spotted. I ended up between. Salam aleykoum. Aleykoum Salam. Did you want to kill me?
You almost succeeded. God did not want it. I owe you a life. I
haven’t forgotten. You are free. I will take up arms again.
It’s your right. This time, I’m the
one who owes you. No, this time we’re even. The way is clear and so is the child. Now we are bound, you and
I, for life. This is the destiny of you. Speak. Because. I thought that taking the family
would end the war. But Bugeaud was right. Abdelkader would run for
another four years. For four years, Elie
and I witnessed the raids the infernal columns of Youssouf
and Lamoricière, to which responded the pyramids of severed heads
of French prisoners. Mine took refuge in Morocco, Bugeaud
pursued them and win the Battle of L’Isly. But the following year,
Abd-el-Kader massacred a French battalion in Sidi Brahim. On Christmas Eve 1847,
after resisting for fifteen long years to one of the most powerful countries on
earth, the emir of the believers was going to admit defeat. God had willed it. More. Rarely the honor. Arab. Stalin. Motsu.
Wake up. Run. Sahara.
Didn’t play a scene where
the mujahideen. Learn the system. As you told me. So when I said. Than Malik’s role. Well, it is. Strange, there are no neo-Nazi Muslims. Open the ban. Anas Abdelkader. Ibn Madi. Iadine.
Mujahideen. Fi.
Sabil Islam Amir Al-mu’minin Khadim
coll Muslimin love all this. Allah I maintain your dough fi sama and. Allah Soubhana Rahmani Rahim The soul
mate Radha. Yakumo Hadi. Amber. Accept this horse of submission. This is the last one I rode. From now on, I will go on foot. I accept it. As a tribute to France whose
protection. Will cover you.
Forever. And as a sign of forgetting the past. Thanks to you, my Holy Mother is healed. May God protect you and yours. If I had men like yours, I would
be in Algiers today. You who defeated me, you
are the only one to whom I can entrust these weapons with which I fought you loyally
for fifteen years. I won’t need it anymore. I will dedicate the
rest of my life to God. God is great. Yesterday’s enemies can be tomorrow’s friends
if they keep their hearts pure. You may see me alive, and
yet I am dead. Squadron Leader Hubert, on
behalf of Her Majesty King Louis-Philippe, I make you a
knight of the Legion of Honor. Congratulations, Hubert,
and thank you again. Squadron Leader Toussaint,
on behalf of His Majesty the King, I be made a knight of the Legion of Honor. Congratulations! Close the ban! I congratulate you, my friends. THANKS.
You deserve it. There are great things left to
be done in this great country. We will build instead
of destroying. THANKS. Do you know there’s fighting going on in the
streets of Paris right now? We even talk about a Republic.
Ah! We’re finally going to have this Republic! But then, what will become of Algeria?
The Republic? This means that all men will
be free, equal and fraternal. Insh’Allah! Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhh. I want to tell you. I come as a friend. Why are you attacking me?
I am not. Not armed, I’m not here for me. Where are my workers? They work for us now. Make yours work. Own
brothers like slaves. They betrayed. They
are punished. When I met the adds, they were the
best warriors of Abd el-Kader. And today, I see nothing but a band
of throat-cutters who cowardly murdered the Delorme family. They violated the saint’s tomb. This is sacrilege, madam. They were punished.
It is God’s law. Yes. You pay. I
have no money. Up and finally there. You
understood. They want your wife. Yes,
in the tube. There, your touch. We’re going to see your wife
so she can pay for you. Kill me right now. Pff. Pff. Pff. Pff. Pff.
Pff. Pff. We’ll show her this and
she’ll come get you. She will come with the army. You will be.
All shot. At. Gradually. Ha! Ha ha ha ha! A cat, a dog, a female dog. Gibi. Dilma. Mansfield. Lake.
Aisha. Ouch, ouch, ouch ouch Ouch! My anger. Bring her. The laws of Morocco. Pfff. Pfff. Pffff. I have read your articles and your
brochure on Algeria. Let me tell you that I do not agree
at all with your Arabophile theories. It is your absolute right. So I assume you are an
Arabic speaking Arab. Call it what you will. Director of the service for ten years
in the general government of Algeria. My point of view is not theoretical,
but based on practice and on the reality of things, of things. I thought we were talking
about people, not things. And what is this point of view? The cross and the crescent
are irreconcilable. A Christian society and a Muslim society
cannot live together only if one dominates the other. And by virtue of which the Christian woman
should dominate the Muslim woman. In the name of the right of the strongest. Does this shock you? But it has always been
this way in history. Now, we are the masters of the country. Why wouldn’t the Cross and the
Crescent get along? But you cannot deny, my general, that
for 20 years, The Arabs refuse to cooperate. They wage war on us, slit the
throats of our settlers, burn our farms and only dream of throwing us into the sea. As long as we treat them as defeated and
not as partners, they will resist. What would you do if the Cossacks and
Prussians still occupied Paris? If they had burned your
family estate in Normandy. Confiscate your lands and
destroy your churches. Excuse me, General, but I refuse
to discuss this further with you. someone who compares our
troops to Cossacks. It’s unbearable. Amélie,
my darling, follow me! Have you seen that jerk? When I think that he is being considered for
the post of Secretary General to the government in Algiers. He treated me like a child. I put it back in its place. You should have seen his face. You were right, Baia. General Fleury suggested that I
create a mission in Algiers. My articles and book are
starting to make a splash there. Will you take me, then?
Yes of course. And then we’ll go see Odilon. It’s been over a year since
I heard from him. Leila wrote to me. She worries about him. You smell good. Am I telling you? What were you doing with those bandits? When did our Emir Abdelkader
surrender to the French? I returned home, heartbroken, to
my son and wife. How is your son? I’m trying to make a man out of him.
May Allah protect him. I wanted to join Belkhadem
whose only wish was to go to Mecca, but the French did not keep
their word and kept him prisoner. So I joined the Hadjout in
the mountains. Have you seen them?
The Libyans have become jackals. They are murderers. It’s
not their fault. The French are the strongest. It
was written. You fought fairly. It
is time to make peace now. Ask the mother. I will
speak to the governor for you. General Randon. If God wills, in him alone
rest my trust. He will decide. You annoy me with your God willing. In our country, we say Help Yourself.
Heaven will help you. It’s decided, I’m going back to Algiers. You desert, you die. The earth is hard, yes, but. Must.
Hang on. In the end, it was my
wife who was right. We’re not made for this kind of life. We’ll find someone to take
over the lease. Oh, it is. There’s
no shortage of that. We’ll put the Spanish on it. Think about it anyway. A helping hand. I didn’t react too much. With.
You. I’m
keeping it. Home. I’m
taking the children. At school. I’m
preparing. The room has everything.
Of course. You come with me. Charles. The lady will be very happy. Do you think so? I saw when I brought her back to the village,
she had cried a lot, a lot. Part of the Charles family. You see my father and my mother. I immediately fell in
love with Algiers. White Algiers, a
languidly stretched-out city on the shores of the Mediterranean. The blades had waited and forgiven. She was beaming with happiness. She had returned to her job as a nurse and
finally found her place in society. As for me, I was finally able
to open a doctor’s practice. The European colony in Algiers was growing
every day and I was more and more convinced that there was only one solution
to preserve this country make it a French province. Not for the military,
but for those who built here a new homeland for the settlers. French ? They said No, it’s fine. Here, I’ll show you this. I
bring them all the time. Our editorial secretary Bonjour and Jeanne
Daunas, correspondent of the illustration, who works with us.
Hello, hello. So wait, wait. So what
do you say about that? I put the package together,
there are four pages. It’s all there.
Your adventure? Your biography? Ah, I
confess everything. Tomorrow you will be the hero of the camp. THANKS. And here is your story. I know you have talent. I already told you, right? What if we teamed up, huh? Here, I’ll sell you half of my
shares, I have. No money. And
neither do I. I’ll give you credit. Come
on ! Chapter five. I accept and I want to defend the
settlers now that I I saw them in action. Well, there
you have it, you finally understand! Here, look at my editorial. It’s
all there. Look at. The indifference of the metropolis,
incompetence and arrogance military personnel.
The laziness of the natives and the conclusion. Read me the conclusion of Father Randon. I made him a suit. The saber regime has had its day. Make way for civil powers. Algeria is France and I’ll
show you around. Yes, with pleasure. Come
on. Come on ! The children. You know your dad is a hero and all the
newspapers are talking about him. You’re exaggerating! Yes, the teacher told us at school. You’re a hero, Dad. You killed many Arabs. No way.
What is this idea? At school, we played
cops and robbers. And the thieves are
always the Arabs. This is completely ridiculous. I’ll go see your master
and we’ll discuss it. But I don’t play because they don’t
want me to be a policeman. For what ? They say I’m mixed race. What is a mixed race? It’s someone who is half and half,
for example, half French, half Arab. So I’m half Arab. I don’t want a half Arab. You are not half Arab. Barely a quarter Kabyle. Pass me the jam, please. It’s not the same.
No way. The Kabyles are not Arabs. They were there long before them. So I can be a police officer? Yes.
Of course, you can be a police officer,
but that doesn’t give you the right to kill anyone. You understood
me well. Come on kids, hurry up, you’re
going to be late! Bye ! Good
day. I work well. Mmm. How are you, sweetie?
Did you understand what I told you? Yes. Good day. It’s true. Everyone
is talking about you. I feel good here. I feel like I’m in France. With the Arabs too. In Algiers, everyone lives on their own. I have to go. General Randon summoned me to the
general government this evening. So, Hubert, we. Spit in the soup. You are one. Former
military man, right? That’s right. And you write in this rag published by Bukhari,
a red that we would have better sent to New Caledonia. He’s a Republican, General. A red, an anarchist who
defends the merchants, adventurers and deportees
who land in Algeria only to make the burnous sweat. If you want to refer to the colonist,
my general, allow me to remember that it is they who colonize
Algeria and cultivate this land in the name of France. This land that we,
the military, conquered. Another thing,
you are in cahoots, I was told, with a a certain Toussaint who publishes books. A restless man who is bustling around Paris. And they demand equality between
Arabs and Europeans. That’s right, General. He is here on a mission
for General Fleury. I had to provide him with an office. I don’t know what he’s up to,
but I don’t like it. I’m having him watched. So try to tease him a
little and let me know. You want wine. Ahmed?
I told you to call the boss, sir. Pardon ? Do you want some wine? Sir ? Sir
? Sir ? No,
that. Go. THANKS.
And you ?
Stop calling him Yaouled. His name is Ahmed. I didn’t tell you. I decided to Frenchify
our lifestyle. I ordered some restaurant chairs
for the living room. For what ?
I find it. Very comfortable. Like
that. At General’s. The other day, some sort of prude
asked me if I was Moorish. Ah, that’s why. But it’s not an insult, he’s
half Spanish, a Kabyle, a quarter French And I find that
the result is rather successful. At least to my taste.
I am French. I don’t want to be
taken for a fool. You know that All Saints’ Day is here. It seems that they are installed in one
of the most beautiful palaces in Algiers. Yes I know.
He became an important figure. He is the agent of General Fleury and
the Arabophile clan of Paris. I saw Baya this afternoon. Since she lived in Paris, she
has put on airs. Do you want some sauce? Yes. I invite you to dinner tomorrow. I would be happy to see
that old Elie again. Could we have
some forks? I lost the habit of eating
with my fingers. So why did you stop
writing to me? I didn’t understand. You’re the one who let me down. I promised to help me through
your Parisian connections. I’m still waiting. Sorry, but it wasn’t. Obvious.
With all these diet changes. A forehand, a blow from the Republic.
Now the Emperor. Don’t you realize?
Of course! In any case, I see that you managed to
get through this difficult period without too much damage to your stripes. What
happened to you? I don’t recognize you. It’s
kind of normal, right? While you’re lounging around in Paris,
I’ve been through hell here too. What a great idea to go colonic!
Oh no, stop! Stop it! Spare me your nonsense. Go see how people
live in Mitidja. Imagine that now I understand
them. The evil colonists. Excuse
me. How are your children? Very good, thank you. Yours, how are you? I would like to bring them back here.
For what ? They are lucky to study
in France. Pardon ? I would like them to know their country,
to speak Arabic. What is Arabic for? It is better if they
speak French well. It’s their culture, their origins. I wouldn’t like them to disown
them like so many others. That’s why you keep wearing
a djellaba. I am very proud to wear it. And at least it has
the advantage of not going out of fashion. Do you want me to tell you? It’s their damn religion that puts them to sleep.
Inshallah. Mektoub. With their fatalism,
they languish in the Middle Ages. And you, what do you do
to get them out of there? You want to keep them in their ignorance because
it serves you this ignorance to dominate them? We are forced to defend ourselves. But with your abandonment policy,
within five years, we could all pack our suitcases. And our dream. Marrying East and West? What
do you do with it? You know very well that only equality
and progress can make their dignity to the Arabs. They don’t want your progress. Ask our brothers in Saint Simon.
Ask Talabot. They sabotage the tracks
of his railway. If we want to modernize this country, we
have to take matters into our own hands, impose on the Arabs our laws and institutions
which are much better. And it’s not just in our interest,
it’s in theirs too. I’m dreaming!
It’s not you who’s talking. I feel like I’m hearing one of those colonialists
or one of those stragglers of saber that I have come across
since I have been in Algiers. I find more understanding for
the Algerian problem in Paris. It’s easy to be for the Arabs when you’re
in Paris and you does not live with them. But I warn you, everyone
here is against you. the governor, the army, the
settlers, you have already lost. So I’m warning you too, your newspaper
is sabotaging politics. of collaboration with the
Arabs, It is serious. If this continues, there will
be war between us. I think we have nothing more
to say to each other. Come on, let’s go. Good evening. Good evening. How sad! They are lost. It is misfortunes that have embittered them. Bang ! You’re
dead. As they have not. Not. I, Hadj Hammou Ben Hadj Hamadi,
give you my horse as well as this sword with which I have
always fought loyally. I place my life in your hands and
as a pledge of sincerity, I give you my son. Decide his fate and mine with
God’s help. As a sign of trust, I return
your saber and your horse to you. and I take your son under my protection. When he is old enough, he will serve France. Go back to your people and
live in peace from now on. Close the ban. I will now only use
it to defend my new friends if they are attacked. I will personally ensure that they are
educated so that they may succeed his father with dignity. The flag of France is large. It can shelter all those who seek
asylum and protection. Oh, by the way! For 20 years I dedicated my life to
war, to killing and destroying. Now I will be able to devote myself to
peace, to healing, to building. As for his studies, if
you want to entrust him to me, I’ll take care of it. On one condition. Which ? That you keep him in
his Muslim religion. I commit myself to it before
your God and before mine. I will take care of them
like my own children. Black Maria. Odilon.
Theo. Starts to go. LL. We have to go. With any high. Tech.
Ha! Ha! Ha! Ha! Ha ha ha! How long are we going to keep
this child at home? I don’t know. It will depend on his studies. He eats with his fingers. He doesn’t even know
how to use a fork. He will learn. That’s what we’re here for. I don’t know what that child did to
you, but you treat him better than yours. It doesn’t show. Good evening. Good
evening. Good evening, madam. Good evening, Mom. Don’t call me mom. And
not my schmocks. Good evening Sylvie Baba. Good
evening. You are not his father. He repeats like a parrot. She has a beautiful nightgown. Where does
she come from? I’ll buy you some
suitable clothes. Why do you always try to hide the fact
that you have a good heart deep down? Eh ? Come on ! Stop touching my things. I like
you. Leave it.
He is mean. Do you want to play with me? Yes. Are
you reading me? Ha! A marble? A marble. A chair. A chair. A table. A table. A girl. A marble. But no, not a marble. A girl. A girl. A boy. A boy. A
girl. A boy. A
girl. A boy. A
girl. Go to. Bed. First, prayer. Attack. Hail Mary, full of grace. The Lord is with you. You are blessed, looking threatening and
split, looking injured in the hand. Mina, Rahim. Malik.
William and. Go! Go! Go ! There there there there there there! What are you going to do? It’s like a threat. But so does she. She managed to do that. And there. I’m looking.
And Issa, my son. He looked like Nawel, whom
I had loved so much. What would become of him? A good Frenchman? A good Algerian? Could he be both at the same time? His children? My children
were going to create a new one together generation that would finally give
a future to our presence in Africa? I still didn’t imagine that a few years
later, Aïssa would become a brilliant soldier in the French army. From the native North. Albi. Salam alaykoum wa rahmatoullah. Karma. THE. Karma. The law is. The Law. And. The standard is the standard. Mrs. Marhaba. Mama
Becca. Salam Alikoum. Bikoum. Cassidy. Cassidy.
My little Lee Thank you for. The madmen of Allah. Allah Allah. I have
you. Mis. In the column When do you help! Ha! Ha!
Ha! Ha! Ha! Ha! Ha! Ha! Ha! Ha! Ha! Ha! Ha! Ha!
How handsome and strong you are, my son. You’re the one who’s beautiful, Mom, you’re the one. No ? I’m old now. Your father didn’t look at me anymore. He comes from.
Take a new wife. A very young one.
Again. Since you left for the French, he has
taken two wives into his bed to make children for him. I’m not a good broodmare, I only
had one son. You. I find polygamy. Is a barbaric custom. You speak like a Frenchman. It’s bullfighting. The Prophet had nine wives. And what is this new
woman’s name? She is a great aunt’s daughter. She is jealous of me. She wanted to send me to the kitchens.
No way. You are coming to Algiers. I’ll have you stay with me. No, no, don’t worry, my son. Your father respects me and protects me. And besides, I don’t want to bother you. You have to get married now.
It’s time. I have chosen for you a nice girl from
a good family, very pretty, very sweet. Sixteen years old with nice
hips unlike me. She will give you beautiful children.
No. You don’t want to get married. Your brothers are already engaged. I chose for them. But your father doesn’t want him to get
married because you’re the eldest. I want to be able to choose
my wife by myself. Do you love another one? Yes. A French woman. Yes. Who is it ? I can’t tell you. Even to your mother. For what ? I don’t know if his parents will want it. Is it because you’re an Arab? No, it’s much more complicated. Oh no, it’s not complicated. Beware Harissa. The French are hypocrites. They are against polygamy, but they
all have secret mistresses. They won’t give you their daughter. Love can break down
all barriers. You are young. It is time that will erase everything. Even love. Me. Your
old mother. I know. Not so. Go do it. Salam aleykoum salam wa. Salam wa aleykoum. Wa wa. Yet I swear to you. Abd Allah seems to be
doing very well. If I read correctly. I’ve lost the habit. You can come and study here. I gradually rebuilt
a good library. I even found manuscripts that
belonged to our Emir Abdelkader. May God protect him in his exile. France stole from us. And
that. You forget that you gave me to her. She made me an officer. She treats me like a son. There is France in Issa. I learned that over time. The France of Paris which made you an officer and
which liberated Italy from the Austrians and France from here, which by imposing
its force, keeps Algeria under the yoke. The governor sent a commission
to take our lands and distribute them to the settlers. What is he trying to
park us in the Sahara for? Emperor Napoleon III is against this policy
of cantonment, I am sure of it. I am invited to go and see him with five
other bachaghas in Compiègne. We’ll see if he’s really for us. You have to trust him. May God hear you! He inspires truth and justice in him. Where there is Amine. You look like a hero. I’m just doing my duty. Go there? To
return. THANKS. You really have.
Summer in Magenta and. Solferino? Yes.
Lucky you! Emile.
War is no fun, except for
kings and emperors. The victory of Solferino
is dozens and dozens of thousands of deaths. Yes, but we saved the Italians from
Austrian occupation. What a beautiful uniform! You are.
Stunning ! Lunch is served. Come
on, let’s eat! Come on, come on!
You’ll be able to tell us all about it. Happiness. of
Elsa. Cheers! I don’t like it. A lot like the way
Aïssa looks at Jeanne. Are you going
out? Yes, with his fried whiting eyes. Haven’t you noticed? No.
For what ? The only thing missing is for
him to be in love with her. But what are you going to imagine? I hope we won’t have to regret raising
this child with our own. You should be proud, on the contrary. The perfect example of
what integration can do best. He looks like a Frenchman. Maybe, but it isn’t. It is by the blood shed. Don’t forget that he is fighting for France. It’s all very nice, but I don’t
want him to touch my daughter. Don’t worry,
he’s taken a room in town. He also values his independence. I hope. I’m bored, Aïssa. I need to do things that are useful,
exciting, unique. Sometimes I even envy the
fate of the settler wives. It’s dangerous, but it’s so exciting. Jane, will you marry me? Oh ! Of course yes. When we were little, we
said we were going to get married. Hmm. Do you think your parents will
give their daughter to a Muslim? Dad ? I
don’t know. Mom, I’m afraid not. But I don’t care. Miss Jane. Sleep.
In the. Patio. Are you feeling well? Alright. Why do I find you weird
these days? You can confide in me, you know? Between women, we understand each other. I have no problem. Listen, a mother feels these things. You’re a big girl, Jeanne. It’s time to think about your future. There is no shortage of young officers
from very good families stationed in Algiers. I will invite them so that you
can meet suitable matches. I’m in no rush to get married. You say that and you quickly find
yourself an old maid. Mom, what are you getting at? I don’t want you to fall in love
with just anyone. This is where I’m going with this. Ah! Is
that it? Yes, that’s it. Since Aissa’s return. Have
you changed? I can see you have a thing for him. Not a weakling. We love each other, Mom. We want to get married.
How ? With an Arab? A Muslim? No way. Marriage is a serious
thing, my dear. You marry someone of your
religion and background. I forbid you to see that boy again. Got it? I forbid you! said. Did you hear? I heard. Pfffff. Pfffff. I was sure of it. I told you so. THANKS.
But you, you big naive?
But no ! They are like brothers and sisters. I’m warning you, if he comes back here,
I’ll call the police. What’s wrong with you? You’re
completely crazy! This is our child.
We raised him with our own. That’s what I regret. Either way, you always had
a thing for him. I don’t want him to touch Jeanne. It’s
clear. But come on, calm down. Anyway, we won’t
have the chance. He will soon leave for France and then it is
a question of sending his regiment in Mexico. When
? I don’t know. Soon the
Emperor decided to install Maximilian of Austria
on the throne of Mexico. Alright. How can you say such a thing? There
is war over there. So much the better
! Let them go get killed. Salam Ahmed, Jeanne is here. And Mrs. F. Go get out of here Go away Go away. No, but never set foot here again! Go away! You have no right to
stop me from seeing him. Until you are an adult, you
must obey your parents. You don’t have. The
right to prevent me from seeing him. I would leave home. Whatever
happens, I’ll go and join him. I will become a Muslim if necessary. Go back to your room. Don’t
touch me. Never again. What are you doing here? I ran away from home. You’re completely crazy. To come and say goodbye to you. Pfffffffff. What are you doing ? I want to be yours. But it is. Not
true, It’s not true! Oh, come on. Have you seen all this news? Why not circumcise him? He takes six bachaga to
Paris to see the emperor. Do you know? No,
I’m not aware of that. Anyway, he’s not my boyfriend anymore. They are plotting around
the emperor in Compiègne. General Fleury All that and the whole clique
of Saint-Simonians, Is that what they want exactly?
But Arabize us. This is what they want. But we’re not going to let that happen.
Count on me. Okay, I’m going back to the machines. Said Come on, come on! Come on ! Come
on ! Oh !
My. You will take good care of yourself. Don’t worry. You know, this trip is
very important to me. The Emperor has decided.
He read my books. He will adopt a new policy
for Algeria. This policy is mine. Do you realize? You’ll still have time. To
go see the children. Of course, I will write to you every
day to tell you about it. Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah. SO ? My dear Baya, you
cannot imagine the lavish consideration with which the Emperor welcomed our
Arab friends to Compiègne. Everything is going wonderfully. The Emperor had long discussions
with the Bachaka. He solemnly promised them perfect
equality between Europeans and Arabs. This is the only thing that is just,
honorable, and true. Did he tell our friends who, you
can imagine, were delighted? It’s a real revolution. The native chiefs presented the emperor
with a magnificent Arabian stallion descendant of the famous Godolphin Arabian, ancestor
of all Thoroughbreds. His Majesty intends him for
the Haras de la Garde. With this, we will compete with the
English, declared General Fleury. Her Majesty the Empress and the Imperial Prince
have showered our friends with respect, of caresses and marks of esteem. The Emperor recognized the young Haïssa whom
he had decorated in Magenta and presented to the Empress. His father,
A. Jiamu, was overjoyed. Finally, His Majesty did me the great honour of
entrusting me with the task of explaining to our friends the details of his plan
to make Algeria an Arab kingdom. My dear friends,
this is the man whose works have inspired the emperor’s policy. No one is better placed than him
to explain it to you. I give him the floor. The Emperor has asked me to tell you
that we have not come to Algeria to oppress you, nor to despoil you,
but to bring you the benefits of civilization. As he told you himself, he wants
to make Algeria a brother country, an Arab kingdom. Now you have the right to his protection
as much as the French. He is both the Emperor of the
French and the King of the Arabs. Practically, what does that mean? First, the emperor
decided to remove the policy of cantonment, that
is to say that collective ownership of your tribes on the lands they traditionally
occupy will be recognized. No more plundering. The land will be ours. She will be at the tribe. And later, everyone will have their share. Second, the Emperor
having proclaimed equality perfect between Europeans
and Arabs, he intends to offer French nationality
to Arabs and to the Jews who ask for it. We know that France
can bring us progress. We are grateful to him, but we would
prefer to administer ourselves according to our own laws and customs. For us Muslims, religion
rules everything. You know, the Quran is the civil code,
the book of science and medicine. This is the Word of God. Rest assured, all your observations
will be taken into account. It’s good.
Nice work. But the Sultan does not.
The remarkable garden does not restart. The shout, the shout My brother, it’s mine. You
don’t know. Abdelkader M’laab Sultan human ecology. Walo who doesn’t make us bledna Hammou. Alas, the Sultan is still gone. Charaf did not live in Tullio Francis Thomas. Charles-Alexis my Nash. He
withdrew. And went to go with our men. What is your impression? They are delighted with their stay. And then they were seduced
by Her Majesty. I believe they will agree with
the Arab kingdom’s formula. Except if Kaddour, my father-in-law, he must
be taken care of, he has a very great influence in Kabylie. In any case, it
is absolutely necessary that His Majesty comes personally launch his
policy in Algeria. It will unleash opposition from the
settlers and even the military. He will come, it’s a question of date. As for Pélissier, if he is not
happy, we will change him. Quickly ! Very good tone.
Paper, Benjamin. You’ll do the next one. on the cantonment that
the military are sabotaging. Hey, look at the layout,
it’s not bad. Yes, that’s right. Wait, little one, come on,
come on, let me warn you. Listen, here it
is. I have bad news for you. Yes, I guess.
Yes, I can’t pay you. You haven’t paid me for two months. Oh but you’re funny, I can’t help it. The cash
register is empty. The cash register is empty. It’s not my fault if half
the settlers are Spanish. or Maltese people who
cannot read French. I think I have a solution. Ah
good ? Maybe you found a gold mine? Serious
? And where? Here
at. Algiers?
What is this? Mine ?
My father’s pockets? Oh ! We are always ready to help
our French friends. Since the beginning of the conquest,
we Jews have offered our services to France. The Turks and the Arabs.
We know them well. Mr. Hubert, we have
been practicing them for two centuries, since my ancestors came from
Livorno to trade between the Barbary pirates and
the Italian merchants. So, you see? Take
a seat at. The size. We know that your father was a highly
valued advisor to the general. Bugeaud for Arab affairs. My son Benjamin told me about your difficulties
with your newspaper. No problem. My eldest son, David, who runs the
bank, will arrange this for you. You will arrange this
with the special interest of friends. We are very grateful to you. But since you are dealing with
politics in your newspaper, I have a favor to ask of you. You say As
President of the Consistory Israelite, I am currently receiving at my home
a French deputy who is concerned about Paris of the fate of our small community. His name is Adolphe Crémieux. I hope he will obtain French nationality
for all the Jews of Algeria. Do you think you were not
interested in politics? It is a matter, let us say, and
let us say of religion. We would be delighted to publish
an interview with him. Tell him to come to the
newspaper whenever he wants. Thank you. It is we who thank you once again
for what you made for the newspaper. In any case, rest assured that it is
for a good cause, that of a French Algeria where the
Jewish community will have its place and an important role to play. And tell me about this,
could you organize for me, in my capacity as president of the Israelite
Consistory, an audience with the Governor general as soon as possible? I don’t think my relationship with
the military is on occasion. Check this out with my son Daniel,
who is dealing with these issues. Ah! Maybe. My good man. Yes.
Victor. Yes. Marshal Pélissier will receive you. I’ll offer you a port while you wait. THANKS.
I don’t smoke a cigar, I don’t smoke. Anyway, it’s Ramadan. Oh sorry, I forgot. I’m warning you, the governor
is in a foul mood. He received instructions from
Paris which upset him. I think I know what it is. Yes, that’s it,
you are the one who inspired Her Majesty. All this nonsense. My respects, Marshal. I don’t see what you’re talking about. Come on, don’t play innocent,
please. This letter of instruction from Her Majesty. Signed by his hand. The end of the cantonment policy. The Arab kingdom. Arabs equal to Europeans. Do you do this? I recognize the subversive formulas in your
books and those of your friends. Fleury David. You attribute to me an influence over
His Majesty which flatters me greatly, Mr. Marshal. We don’t act like Jesuits. Know one thing, my little sir. I was there at the landing. I gave 30 years of my life,
my youth, my health to this country. All this to now hand it over to the Arabs
who will mess everything up as soon as we turn our backs. Accept this to me. Never, do you hear me? Never. Dare I remind you,
Marshal, that this country belongs to the Arabs.
Not anymore. We won it with
our blood. And especially at the cost of their own. Listen to me, Toussaint. We are not dreamers, empty
dreams. We are building,
we are making Algeria a modern country which will bring comfort to
the settlers and the natives. Progress. There is no other valid project. Everything else
is just gossip for a few intellectuals in need of recognition. A bit like you. You will not build anything without the Algerians. Cough, cough, cough. You may be the smartest, but
beware, I warn you, I won’t let you do it. For God’s sake, I’m the strongest. And then, I too have
connections at court. You may forget that my wife is
the Empress’s cousin. May I be excused, Marshal? Get out of here so I don’t find
you in my way again. It might get you in trouble. My respects, Marshal. You’ve got that insolence! I asked the emperor to dismiss this
fox with the cut tail. Save your bullshit for
the Parisians, all that! When we arrived here, remember,
it was the desert. There were only swamps, mosquitoes
and dwarf palm trees. A third of us died
of cholera fever. A third, discouraged, gave up and rented
their land to the Arabs. We are the last third. We have resisted the massacre of the adds,
the epidemics, the drought, to grasshoppers.
We will resist your Arab kingdom. Listen. Why remove the cantonment? Algeria has 3,000,000 and a half inhabitants. She could feed 20. There are 12,000,000 hectares of
fallow land in the Tell. And you ?
Do you want to block colonization? But there is room here for hundreds
of thousands of new settlers. So why leave the fertile
land to the Arabs? Either they destroy it with their
herds, or they cultivate it badly on one hectare. We produce six times more than them. He’s
right. This is our land. Here we have created a new piece
of our French homeland. My friends, you have forgotten that this country
is at once indigenous, colonial and military. The Emperor said it,
it is an Arab kingdom, a colony European and a military camp. What is this gibberish? It’s as clear as black pudding water. First of all, we are not
your friends, Toussaint. And then to govern is to choose. It’s either them or us. So go tell your emperor that nothing and
no one will drive us out of here. We are at home. Yes yes. The Franco-Muslim plot hatched in Paris against
us wants to give power to the Arabs. In that case, Algeria will
be ruined for us. Do you want to become Arab? No, no, no! We will. Stay
French. We will not give in to
Napoleon the Little. The king of the Arabs. It is today. A colony
of more than 200. Zero zero zero Europeans. We’ll
have to be reckoned with. We mobilized all the settlers of Mitidja
and all the real ones. Republicans. Printers, masons, merchants,
architects. And the Jews? They
are with us. Of course.
They might not show up. But I am here. We will mobilize women and demonstrate
with you. We. Let’s go ! Let it be known. Long live the Republic! For a month
we lived in fever. Algiers was under siege. Every day, at our call, settlers,
workers, traders, officials took to the streets. Even women got involved. French Algeria. Present arms. What did you think of taking us away from Tunis?
French women! Let us pass. We are going to the general government. The street is forbidden. Let us pass. We play. To the ball. She acts against French politics. I’m a lieutenant
and all I’m owed. Taught. Come on, calm down. I am not unhappy with all
these demonstrations. They will show Paris the futility of its
policy of abandonment. Now it’s the women
who are getting involved. We’ve seen it all. These people are excited. A bit of a hothead. But they calm down just as quickly. And then, remember, we
are south of Marseille. In any case, tell the security service
to take it easy. Maybe some gun butt shots,
but no shooting, It’s an order. I don’t want any breakage,
including more breakage. After a month, calm had returned. Marshal Pélissier had meanwhile
died of pneumonia. and the policy of the Arab kingdom
experienced a first disappointment. Neither Jews nor Arabs wanted to give
up their special status for the French nationality that Napoleon
offered them 200 Arabs, 200 Arabs only 3 million people asked for it. And among them,
Aïssa who had reasons for her personal reasons for wanting to be French. THANKS.
I don’t drink. Oh yes, that’s true. I came to ask you for
Jeanne’s hand. Officially. My regiment is leaving for Mexico and. And we would like to get
engaged before I leave. Elsa Jeanne and you, it’s not possible. For what ? You are too young. And then you’re practically
brothers and sisters. A Kabyle proverb says Mary, you
in your tribe, in your village and if possible in your family. You belong to two very
different worlds. How ? Two
worlds? I am French now. But you are French, but
you are also Muslim. You don’t realize the enormous difficulties
you face. will have to overcome? And then, Jeanne, we
have to get married in church. What will your family say?
There were other mixed marriages. These are.
Exceptions. Your friend Elie Toussaint
married a Muslim woman. Yes, but he converted
and today he is rejected by his family. Listen, there’s no point in arguing. It’s yes or it’s no. And that, I would like. To tell you yes. But it’s impossible, believe
me, trust me. So it’s no. What if we do without your permission? I forbid you. Pffff. Pfff.
Yes, I understand. On the battlefield, my Arab
blood is accepted and in Paris, I am granted
French nationality. But in reality, they forgot to tell me that
it’s a passport. second category. Because here in Algiers, I remain a Harbi,
a bicot, right? Including for you. Now it’s clear. I’ll wait for you. When you come back, I’ll be an adult. I would leave home, you would get married. We’ll go live in France, right? We will have to wait a little longer. I will wait as long as it takes. Napoleon III came to Algeria twice to
proclaim himself king of the Arabs. He was delighted. He ate ostrich eggs, roast gazelle
and lion’s legs. Everywhere, countless
crowds cheered him. At the Journal,
we were obliged to recognize that it was a great success, well
organized, it is true, by the officers of the Arab offices. Elijah was his personal interpreter
throughout the stay. It was his moment of glory. He believed he was finally seeing
the birth of his Arab kingdom. And fate would have it otherwise. Look at this. This has been going on for four years. Drought, famine, cholera and to
top it all off, locusts. All at the same time. For
four years, we never saw anything like this. Look, they eat grass, roots
and even leaves. People are dying like flies from
hunger and cholera. And the French doctors, they are. Cholera is not racist. There are also French victims. Even Bugeaud died of it in Paris. At the beginning of July.
I am. Always with my wife. My. Agent at the Meskina dual. The
bordj. People here are superstitious. They say the Arab kingdom
has a bad eye. I’m sorry. Everything you did for
us is turning against us. Not our fault though. Drought, locusts, disease. Fate is against us. People say it is God’s revenge
because we did not know defend our land against the infidels. Go tell the governor that if France does nothing,
there will be war here again. I know. Let him know. Salam, Salam, Salam.
How is she? It’s cholera. Go fast. She’s been waiting for you for two days. Ha! Ha! Ha! Ha! Ha! My son ! The pride of my life. You came. Say
goodbye to me. I am here. You will stay. Too late. It is God who chooses the hour. But mine came. I have to tell you a secret. And
that. It’s a secret. Yes, that’s what I’ve carried
in my heart since you were born. Odilon and your father. You must not marry Jeanne. Forgive me, s. I have mixed the blood of the infidel with that
of the true fighter of the faith. I was a young slave in the harem. During the Peace of Tafna. Odilon was a doctor
to Abd-el-kader. But you were born. In Cherbourg raised you. He taught you how to walk, how
to ride a horse, to use the saber and the rifle. He taught you righteousness and courage. He taught you the true religion. He is your father too. Got involved in their struggle. Takeshi. Mektoub.
Now. Al
Malik. Up there. Up
there. Up there. To
do to me. Forget that a fic. Emma. Stay with me. Stay. Stay there. Yes. Ouch, ouch, ouch!
The cut. Nothing in the script. A. Crowd. A crowd. Where do you Warren et. Mohamed Rassoulallah La ilaha illa Allah. Subhana. Allah. Allah, may Allah bless you. Mohamed Oh la la la la! La la la la. There.
There. La La La La. La.

she mustn’t find out. Never. I
promise you. But yes! Never ! Alex
Harp wrote Dilana. If she comes here, I will be by your side. You can’t. And that,
you would betray. Have you renounced your religion? I have not renounced my religion. A day will come when, in France, one
will be able to be French and Catholic, French and Jewish,
French and Muslim in France. Maybe not here, my son. Not in the land of Islam. The
settlers. You are French now. You must
leave and follow your destiny. I am French. But my heart remains in Algeria
forever. Oh my son! Aichi-ken Moxo! Fed up. Fed up. Fed up. Fed up. Fed up. Fed up. Fed
up. Fed up. Pfffff. Pffff. Are you hiding something from me? What’s going on? There is another woman. Is that it? Tell me frankly. I’m going to get married. What ? My mother chose a wife for me. I have to accept. It’s tradition, you understand? I don’t believe it. I don’t believe it. I don’t care. What are you going to do
alone in Paris? Eh ? Where are you going to go? You will go to Aunt Ines’s. I’m going to enlist as a nurse. I’m going to the front to
treat the wounded. I too want to defend France. You’re lying. Do you want to go find him? You’re going to find your Arabic again. Aren’t you ashamed to run
after him like that? How dare you? What are you, huh? Your grandmother who was raped by a Kabyle,
you’re forgetting that one, right? You have Arab blood too, eh? Did the evil Arabs
rape women like you? Pfff, I have. It’s a debacle. Everywhere our armies are being beaten: Hamburg,
Reichshoffen, Frœschwiller. What a shame!
But it’s the Emperor’s fault! But what a great idea to
go to war with Prussia! Bismarck was only asking for that. We need to change. The
newspaper headline. The Emperor was taken prisoner at Sedan. He
abdicated. Gambetta proclaimed the Republic, The
Republic, my friends, the Republic. Come with me. That’s it. Amazing ! the Emperor imprisoned,
the Republic proclaimed, A 20-year dream finally come true. Napoleon Dictator! Long live the Republic! Long
live! France ! In Paris. That’s it, it’s the chief commissioner of
the Bonapartist brigade! Ha! Ha!
Ha! Ha!
Ha! Ha! Ha! Ha! You better disappear before
my friends arrive. Do you hear them?
They are very excited. This is not the time to play the hero. Come
on, save yourself! Quickly ! Before the emperor. Where is the chick? Eh
? Where is the fox? Gone. I don’t pay anything to wait. The French are fighting among themselves. We must take advantage of this to
throw them into the sea, No. We must find ways to save
the Arab kingdom. The Arab kingdom. Classroom after class one day dying of laughter. They call themselves Republicans,
but you know them. They are colonialists, Arabic
speakers. French mouchkila. Mrs. Le Walo. We must take advantage of this to stir
up the tribes and drive out the French. Who live in France. To
what? Play bana.
Running? As. Diallo said, we will come true. I’ve had enough of your talk. I want to raise my tribes and fight. You come with me to Oran. You can’t stay in Algiers anymore. Blabber. Baya. Baya. I beg you. Do this for me, it’s too dangerous. I’ll try to get to Paris
on my own. You’ll find me there. I love you. Paris has fallen.
The government took refuge in Tours. Pfff. My God, France is
falling apart. We should proclaim independence. And who sent Garibaldi to us? And Algeria will do it on its
own like Italy. Is that it? You want to leave us alone
facing 3 million Arabs? Thank you so much.
What are the other dispatches? Nothing special, right? What do you think about. What do you have? What’s
wrong? On the front, the regiments of African
hunters and Algerian riflemen and Zouaves showed indomitable
bravery, but they paid a heavy price. The second Turko particularly distinguished
himself but was bled dry. The officers died on the
field of honor. And the second Turks is
the D’aïssa regiment. SO. Friends! The military regime is abolished. Wo wo wo wo wo. Algeria is divided. In three departments where French
laws will be applied. The departments will be administered by
a prefect and represented by deputies. The governor.
The Governor General. Will now be a dependent civilian. From the Ministry of the Interior. My friends, we have won. Algeria is civil and French. French Algeria. French Algeria. French Syria. French Algeria. French Algeria. French Algeria. Long live the Vendée! Wait, that’s not all. Now, the 33,000. Jews from Algeria will automatically have
French nationality. Will we have the right to vote?
Naturally. And the Arabs too.
For now. Nothing.
Not planned. Phew. I had. Fear.
Shut up! Thousands of Turks and
Zouaves have just died on the battlefields and they
voted with their blood. I ask for a minute of silence for our Muslim
brothers who died for France. SO. Why did you hide all this from me? I swore. How could you keep it? All
that for. You alone for so long? Ha! Ha ha. Ha! Ha! Ha Ha! My dear father, if you are reading this letter,
it is because I died on the field of honor. No need to cry. It is with joy that I offer to France this
life that you have given me and from whom I no longer expect anything. I will finally rest in peace under the
protection of the two deities who have presided over my birth and death, the
Almighty God of the Arabs, who commands good and evil,
and the merciful God of Christians who forgives everything to poor sinners. I am writing to remind
you of your oath. Jeanne must never know, Never. Farewell, your son Aïssa. What happened? Why did he reject me? And there.
Larbi! Stop there.
Larbi! Stop right there, Larbi! Banana. Rabbit. Bad. Bad Wolf.
In the 94. Yes. Open. You’re looking for me everywhere. I
don’t know where to go anymore. Go home. At your place. Well. She left with her father for Oran. Why didn’t you bring him with you? I would have taken care of her. Have you eaten? No. I’m not hungry. I’ll make a bed for you. You can’t stay in Algeria any longer,
they’ll kill you. You’re going to spend the night here. Tomorrow I’ll find you
a boat to Spain. Pfff. Pfff. Pfff. Pfff. Pfff. I paid.
Half. Here is the other one.
You will give them only upon arrival. That’s a safe conduct. We don’t
know. Never. And a gun. It can. You.
Serve. THANKS. What a beautiful country our country is! What is it? Happened
to us? Odilon? The
life. Do you remember? Menilmontant. The marriage of East and West. Why did you give up
on our ideal? Utopia? The Arab kingdom is not a utopia. On the contrary, it is realism. You’ll
see. You will realize
it. Count one day too. Why do you always wish
your ideal in my face? My ideal is as good as yours. Do you want to make this land
a piece of France? Make republican France one of liberty,
equality and fraternity. Your freedom, your freedom, it is the. Right of the strongest to oppress the most.
Weak. Not necessarily. The Republican School will make good
French people out of these Arabs. It will take time, certainly. But I have confidence. Chimera. Chimera. Do you want to make them good French
people and not good Algerians? Do you want to make them good French
people in spite of themselves? You won’t make it. Time will tell which of
us was right. It is God who decides. Insh’Allah! Ouch. Ouch. Ouch ouch But he. Him. He happens to go to the cemetery where he has dinner. And All Saints’ Day?
What happened to him? I never saw him again. I was told that he had
returned to Algeria. How so? He continued his journey alone. It
looks like him. You never saw him again? He was your friend though. Basically, you see,
I never left him. You know, we need some,
utopians as you say. Dreamers. Without
them, he. there wouldn’t be any people.
Forgive me. I have to go now. It’s a little cold in here,
don’t you think? If. Yes, I assure you.
It’s always like this. After a while, the cold gets to you. It’s terrible. By. Salam alaykoum wa rahmatoullah.

said thank you for the help. The madmen of Allah.
Allah. Allah. My head column When do you help. His stepson was amazing. Ha! Ha! Ha! Ha! Ha! Ha! Ha! Ha! Ha! Ha!
How handsome and strong you are, my son! You’re the one who’s beautiful, mom. Is that you? No. I’m old now. Your father didn’t look at me anymore. He just took a new wife. A very young one.
Again. Since you left for the French. He took two wives into his bed
to make children for him. I am not a good broodmare. I only had one son. You. I find polygamy a barbaric
custom.
It’s time. I have chosen for you a nice girl from
a good family, very pretty, very sweet, sixteen years old with nice
hips not like me. She will give you beautiful children.
No. You don’t want to get married. Your brothers are already engaged. I chose for them. But your father doesn’t want them to
get married because you’re the eldest. I want to be able to choose
my wife by myself. Do you love another one? Yes. A French woman. Yes. Who ?
Is it? I can’t tell you. Even to your mother. For what ? I don’t know if his parents will want it. Is it because you’re an Arab? No, it’s much more complicated. Oh no, it’s not complicated. Beware Harissa. The French are hypocrites. They are against polygamy, but they
all have secret mistresses. They won’t give you their daughter. Love can break down
all barriers. You are young. It is time that will erase everything. Even love. I, your old mother, know. That’s why. It will be done well. Salam aleykoum. Hello.
Salam aleykoum. Allah, yet I make you jimbe. Abdullah seems to be
doing very well. If that arbaya. I’ve lost the habit. You can come and study here. I gradually rebuilt
a good library. I even found manuscripts that
belonged to our Emir Abdelkader. May God protect her in her exile! France stole you from us. And
that. You forget that you gave me to her. She made me an officer. She treats me like a son. There is France in Issa. I learned that over time. The France of Paris which made you an officer and
which liberated Italy from the Austrians, and France from here, which, by imposing
its force, keeps Algeria under the yoke. The governor sent a commission
to take our lands and distribute them to the settlers. Isn’t he trying to park us in the Sahara? Emperor Napoleon III was against
this policy of cantonment. I’m sure of it. I am invited to go and see him with five
other bachaghas in Compiègne. We’ll see if he’s really for us. You have to trust him. May God hear you! He inspires truth and justice in him. Where there is the mine. Low. Issa was back. What a joy to find my son again after three
years of absence, this secret son who became a man and covered
in glory in the French uniform. Have you really been
to Magenta and Solferino? Yes, lucky you. Emile, war is no fun, except
for the kings and emperors. The victory of Solferino
is dozens and dozens of thousands of deaths. Yes, but we saved the Italians from
Austrian occupation. What a beautiful uniform! You look great! Lunch is served. Come
on, let’s eat! Come on, come on!
You’ll be able to tell us all about it. In honor of Aissa. I looked at Aïssa. He was proof that one could be both a good
Frenchman and a good Muslim. I have before my eyes the successful
marriage between East and West. I was starting to believe it again.
I hope. That. I’m going to tell you a secret, Jeanne. I like war. I discovered a new homeland:
the army. In the army, all
barriers fall. I am no longer a Muslim among
Catholics, an Arab among the French. I am a soldier among others, all
equal before death. Only one hierarchy has courage. Do you understand? I don’t know. It’s a man’s world
where women don’t enter. I’m bored. Aïssa.
I need to do things that are useful,
exciting, unique. Sometimes I even envy the fate
of the settler wives. It’s dangerous, but it’s so exciting. Jane, will you marry me? Of course yes. When we were little, we
said we were going to get married. Hmm. Do you think your parents will
give their daughter to a Muslim? Dad ? I
don’t know. Mom, I’m afraid not. But I don’t care. Miss Jane. Sleep.
In the patio.
They
say. This and we. She
quickly finds herself an old maid. Mom, what are you getting at? I don’t want you to fall in love
with just anyone. This is where I’m going with this. Oh, is that it? Yes,
that’s it. And then Aissa’s return. Have
you changed? I can see you have a thing for him. Not a weakling. We love each other, mom. We want to get married.
How ? With an Arab? A Muslim? No way. Marriage is a serious
thing, my dear. You don’t marry someone of your
religion and background. I forbid you from seeing that boy again, do
you understand? I forbid you! You have.
Heard ? I heard. Pfffff. Pfffff.
Pffffffffff.
I knew it!
Soon. The Emperor decided to install Maximilian
of Austria on the throne of Mexico. Alright. How can you say such a thing? There
is war there. So much the better
! Let them go get killed. By. Saddam.
Ahmed Janella and Mrs. F. Come on. Get out of here! Get out! Get out!
No, but more. Never the feet. Here
! Make your own. You don’t have the right to it now,
but I’ll see it. Until you are an adult, you
must obey your parents. You have no right to stop
me from seeing him. I would leave home no matter what,
I would go and join him. I will become a Muslim if necessary. Go back to your room. Don’t
touch me. Never again. What are you doing here? I ran away from home. You’re completely crazy. To come and say goodbye to you. Pffffffff. What are you doing ? I want to be yours. But it’s not true, it’s not true! Oh, come on. Have you seen all this news? Why not circumcise him? He takes six bachaga to
Paris to see the emperor. Do you know? No,
I. Don’t follow.
Aware. Anyway, he’s not my boyfriend anymore. They are plotting around
the emperor in Compiègne. General Fleury All that and the whole
clique of Saint-Simonians, that’s it. What they want. Just
? But Arabize us. This
is what they want. But we’re not going to let that happen.
Count on me. Okay, I’m going back to the machines. Said Go. Come on! Come on ! Come
on ! Oh !
My. You will take good care of yourself. Don’t worry. Not. You know, this trip is
very important to me. The Emperor has decided.
He read my books. He will adopt a new policy
for Algeria. This policy is mine. Do you realize? You’ll still have time to go. See
the children. Of course. I will write to you every
day to tell you about it. Hhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh. My dear Baya, you
cannot imagine the lavish consideration with which the Emperor welcomed our
Arab friends to Compiègne. Everything is going wonderfully. The Emperor had long discussions
with the Bachaghas. He solemnly promised them perfect
equality between Europeans and Arabs. This is the only thing that is just,
honorable, and true. Did he tell our friends who, you
can imagine, were delighted? It’s a real revolution. It is. The last thing. To do. The native chiefs presented the emperor
with a magnificent Arabian stallion descendant of the famous Godolphin Arabian, ancestor
of all Thoroughbreds. His Majesty intended him for
the Garde stud farm. With this, we will compete with the
English, declared General Fleury. Her Majesty, the Empress and the Prince Imperial
have showered our friends with respect, of caresses and marks of esteem. The Emperor recognized the young Aïssa whom he
had decorated in Magenta and presented him to the Empress, to his father,
to Jiamu was at the height of pride.
Second, the Emperor
having proclaimed equality perfect between Europeans
and Arabs. He intends to offer French nationality
to Arabs and to the Jews who ask for it. We know that France can bring
us progress and we We are grateful to him. But we would prefer to govern ourselves according
to our own laws and customs. For us Muslims, religion
rules everything. You know, the Quran is the civil code,
the book of science and medicine. This is the Word of God. Rest assured, all your observations
will be taken into account. It’s thanks.
At work. Exhilarating, remarkable. Restart the clam, the
clam man Farsa Mateen. Know. Abdelkader M’laab. than Amber Sultan. And that the bar or Makan Walou who
only has one daughter Bledna. Hamou. And there is Sultan Hakim. You still aren’t. Used to the French place Saint Thomas. Aquinas Chi ma Ana. He
withdrew. And went to clash with men. What is your impression? They are delighted with their stay. And then they were seduced
by Her Majesty. I believe they will agree with
the Arab kingdom’s formula. Except if Kaddour, my father-in-law, he must
be taken care of, he has a very great influence in Kabylie. In any case, it
is absolutely necessary that His Majesty comes personally launch his
policy in Algeria. It will unleash opposition from the
settlers and even the military. He will come.
It’s a question of date. As for Pélissier, if he is not
happy, we will change him. In sight. And there you have it. My friend Talabot.
You’ve been waiting for half an hour. I am happy. To
see you. Odilon. What are you doing in Algiers? Great news, old man. That’s
it! Next week, the last
rail will be solemnly laid of the railway line and the
Blida station is inaugurated. Marshal Pélissier and the whole gang. Everyone
will be there. I’m counting on you to do it. A beautiful
one. Article. Hey, the newspaper
is yours now. Half. I bought
the shares from Rocard. But we’re having a bit of trouble.
Don’t you want to sit down? No, no, I’m running away. I
have an appointment with Pélissier. I gave all the elements to Rocard. See you later at the cafe,
in the square. All right. Madam. Here.
It’s a lab. He is a Saint-Simonian. Apparently you were there too? Mr.
Odilon? Does this sect still exist? They are rather scattered, but they still
have some influence at court. Among the polytechnicians
or among the bankers? Here is the article.
That being said, they have changed a lot. It has become a kind
of Freemasonry. What do they want exactly? There
are two kinds. There are utopians like Toussaint who
believe in Santa Claus. and all the others who have only one religion,
progress, and who imagine that with capital,
factories, mines, railways, they will sort everything out. But the paradox is that
at the beginning they wanted to be socialists and that in the end,
they are big capitalists. No, I saw Elijah yesterday. We talked about you. Good old days. You seem to have a falling out. We have nothing more to say to each other. He became General Fleury’s agent
and represented the clan of Arabophiles who want to sell off Algeria. We are in total disagreement about the
future of this country. You are both wrong. Said
Long. She imagines. That the French and the Arabs
can live as equals. In this country. You want to make them
fully-fledged French people. Illusion.
Utopia? And you, what is your solution? Yes, I build,
I build railways. I draw roads. I search the ground. I plant trees. I am progress. A sister of charity. I’m telling you about reality.
No chimera. I’ll tell you what the Arabs already
call your railway. araba Sheitane the devil’s chariot. I’m hungry.
Come on, let’s have lunch. It is. Very good. Your
paper. Benjamin, you. Will
do. The next one is about the cantonment that
the military are sabotaging. Hey, look at the layout,
it’s not bad. Yes, that’s right. Wait, kid. Come,
come, let me warn you. Listen, here it
is. I have bad news for you. Yes, I guess.
Yes, I can’t pay you. You haven’t paid me for two months. Oh but you’re funny, I can’t help it. The cash
register is empty. The cash register is empty. It’s not my fault if half
the settlers are Spanish. or Maltese people who
cannot read French. I think I have a solution. Ah
good ? Maybe you found a gold mine? Serious
? And where? Here
in Algiers? It’s what. This.
Mine ?
My father’s pockets? Oh ! We are always ready to help
our French friends. Since the beginning of the conquest,
we Jews have offered our services to France. We know the Turks and
the Arabs well. Mr. Hubert, We have
been practicing them for two centuries, since my ancestors came from
Livorno to trade between the Barbary pirates and
the Italian merchants. So, you see? Take
a seat at. Jimena The size. We know that your father was a highly
valued advisor to the general. Bugeaud for Arab affairs. My son Benjamin told me about your difficulties
with your newspaper. No problem. My eldest son, David, who runs the
bank, will arrange this for you. You’ll fix that, right? With the special interest of friends. We are you. Very grateful and I take this opportunity
to tell you how much we Let us appreciate Benjamin’s
intelligence, competence and talent. To my son Benjamin. I sent him to study law in Montpellier,
which cost me a lot dear to become our lawyer. But in France, he caught
the political bug. Politics decides the fate of
people and nations. This is a very important thing. And I prefer commerce. It’s safer. Whatever the regime, there
is business to be done.
You see you were not
interested in politics. It is a matter, let us
say, of religion.
Consistory, an audience with the governor General of Gaza will be possible for you. I don’t.
Don’t think my relationship with
the military is. On occasion. Check this out with my son Daniel,
who is dealing with these issues. Ah, maybe. My man? Yes.
I like it.
Candy. Ha! Ha ha ha ha ha! You had a good trip. A
bit long. I missed you too. You are.
Always. Also. Beautiful. So the children tell. Me.
They are doing very well.
He kisses you. They miss you very much. Ahmed received his doctorate
in law with honors. This way he will be able to
open a practice in Algiers. I’m not sure
he wants to. And why is that? If I tell you, you’ll get angry. But
tell me. He says he won’t have a chance in Algiers. He decided to live in Paris. I’m warning you, he changed his first name. He calls himself Amédée. My son Ahmed. Amédée You see, you’re getting angry. I don’t approve of it,
but I can understand it. If he has to live in Paris with an Arabic
name, it’s like wearing a burnous on the main boulevards. There are many Jews or Poles who have Frenchified
their first names. It won’t be the first. So in this case, why
do all the French people live here? don’t all take Arabic first names? It’s a question of religion. First names are religious, they
are saints. Yes, but it’s not going to happen like that. Baya. I’m going to write to him
about my thoughts. Calm down, things are going to change
here, so maybe Ahmed will change too. The Emperor accepted
all our proposals. Algeria is now an Arab kingdom
where all citizens are equal. You’re going to have a lot of trouble, Elie. They’re all against you here. Well, you must be a little hungry. Marshal Pélissier will receive you. I’ll offer you a port while you wait. THANKS.
I don’t smoke a cigar, I don’t smoke. Anyway, it’s Ramadan. Oh sorry, I forgot. I’m warning you, the governor
is in a foul mood. He received instructions from
Paris which upset him. I think I know what it is. Yes, that’s it,
you are the one who inspired Her Majesty. All this nonsense. My respects, Marshal. I don’t see what you’re talking about. Come on, don’t play innocent,
please. This letter of instruction from Her Majesty. Signed by his hand. The end of the cantonment policy. The Arab kingdom. Arabs equal to Europeans. Do you do this? I recognize the subversive formulas in your
books and those of your friends. Fleury David. You attribute to me an influence over
His Majesty which flatters me greatly, Mr. Marshal. We don’t act like Jesuits. Know one thing, my little sir. I was there at the landing, I
gave 30 years of my life, from my youth, from my health to this country. All this to now hand it over to the Arabs
who will mess everything up as soon as we turn our backs. Accept this to me. Never, do you hear me? Never. Dare I remind you,
Marshal, that this country belongs to the Arabs?
Not anymore. We won it with
our blood. And especially at the cost of their own. Listen to me all one We are not
dreamers, empty dreams. We are building,
we are making Algeria a modern country which will bring comfort to
the settlers and the natives. Progress. There is no other valid project. Everything else
is just gossip for a few intellectuals in need of recognition. A bit like you. You will not build anything without the Algerians. Cough cough cough. You may be the smartest, but
beware, I warn you, I won’t let you do it. No God, I’m the strongest. And then I also have
connections at court. You may forget that my wife is
the Empress’s cousin. May I excuse myself, Marshal? Get the hell out of here and don’t
let me find you anywhere. It might get you in trouble. My respects, Marshal. You’ve had it, that insolence. I asked the emperor to dismiss this
fox with the cut tail. He is General Fleury’s agent, and he
has the support of Her Majesty. Holy crap! We will see who will be the strongest. Save your bullshit for the Parisians. All
that. When we arrived here, remember,
it was the desert. There were only swamps, mosquitoes,
dwarf palm trees. A third of us died
of cholera fever. A third, discouraged, gave up and rented
their land to the Arabs. We are the last third. We have resisted the massacres of the
additions, the epidemics, to drought, to locusts. We will resist your Arab kingdom. Listen. Why remove the cantonment? Algeria has 3,000,000 and a half inhabitants. She could feed 20. There are 12,000,000 hectares of
fallow land in the tel. And you, do you want
to block colonization? But there is room here for hundreds
of thousands of new settlers. So why leave the fertile
land to the Arabs? Either they destroy it with their
herds, or they cultivate it badly on one hectare. We produce six times more than them. He’s
right. This is our land. Here we have created a new piece
of our French homeland. My friends, you have forgotten that this country
is at once indigenous, colonial and military. The Emperor said it,
it is an Arab kingdom, a colony European and a military camp. What is this gibberish? It’s as clear as black pudding water. First of all, we’re not your
friends, all that. And then, to govern is to choose. It’s either them or us. So go tell your emperor that nothing and
no one will drive us out of here. We are at home. Oh yes! The Franco-Muslim plot hatched in Paris against
us wants to give power to the Arabs. In that case, Algeria will
be ruined for us. Do you want to become Arab?
No. We will. Stay
French. We will not give in to
Napoleon the Little. The king of the Arabs. It is today. A.
Colony of more than 200 zero zero.
Zero Europeans. We’ll have to be reckoned with. We mobilized all the settlers of
Mitidja and all the real Republicans, printers, masons,
merchants, architects. And the Jews? They
are with us. Of course. They may not show up,
but I’m here. We will mobilize women and demonstrate
with you. Yessssssss. After the emperor. passA la. I
have a bag here. Long live her.
Republic! Oh no! For a month
we lived in fever. Algiers was under siege. Every day, at our call, settlers,
workers, traders, officials take to the streets, even
women get involved. French Algeria. Present arms. French Algeria. Knees
on the ground. French. French
Algeria. Let us pass. We are
going to the general government. The street is forbidden. Let us pass. We play. To the ball. Come on, let’s go.
Mess ! I’m here, Lieutenant.
We. Come on, calm down. I am not unhappy with all
these demonstrations. They will show Paris the futility of its
policy of abandonment. Now it’s the women
who are getting involved. We’ve seen it all. These people are excited. A bit touchy, but they
calm down just as quickly. And then, remember, we
are south of Marseille. Ha ha ha! In any case, tell the security service
to take it easy. Maybe some gun butt shots,
but no shooting, It’s an order. I don’t want any breakage. Understood ? No more breakage. After a month, calm had returned. Marshal Pélissier had meanwhile
died of pneumonia. and the policy of the Arab kingdom
experienced a first disappointment. Neither Jews nor Arabs wanted to give
up their special status for the French nationality that
Napoleon offered them. 200 Arabs, only 200 Arabs out
of 3 million, asked for it. And among them, Aïssa,
who had reasons for her personal reasons for wanting to be French. It was given to him. Thank you, I don’t drink. Oh yes, that’s true. I came to ask you for
Jeanne’s hand. Officially. My regiment is leaving for Mexico and we would
like to get engaged before I leave. Elsa. Jeanne and you, it’s not possible. For what ? You are too young. And then you’re practically
brothers and sisters. A Kabyle proverb says: Marry in your tribe,
in your village. and if possible in your family. They belonged to two very
different worlds. How ? Two
worlds? I am French now. But you are French, but you are Muslim. You don’t realize the enormous difficulties
you face. will have to overcome. And
then Jeanne will die. Getting married in church? What
will your family say? There were other mixed marriages. These are exceptions. Your friend Elie Toussaint
married a Muslim woman. Yes, but he converted
and today he is rejected by his family. Listen, there’s no point in arguing. It’s yes or it’s no. And that, I would like to say yes to you. but it’s impossible, believe me. Trust me. So it’s no. What if we do without your permission? I forbid you. Pffff. Pfff.
Yes, I understand. On the battlefield, my Arab
blood is accepted. And in Paris, they deign to grant
me French nationality. But in reality, they forgot to tell me that
it’s a passport. second category. Because here, in Algiers,
I remain a Harbi, a bicot. Isn’t it? Including
for you? Now it’s clear. I’ll wait for you. When you come back, I’ll be an adult. I would leave home, we would get married. We’ll go live in France, right? We will have to wait a little longer. I will wait as long as it takes. Napoleon III came to Algeria twice to
proclaim himself king of the Arabs. He was delighted. He ate ostrich eggs, roast gazelle
and lion’s legs. Everywhere, countless crowds of
Arabs cheered him. At the Journal,
we were obliged to recognize that it was a great success, well
organized, it is true, by the officers of the Arab offices. Elijah was his personal interpreter
throughout the stay. It was his moment of glory. He believed he was finally seeing
the birth of his Arab kingdom. But fate would have
other plans. Only by law. Laws of chance. Look at this. This has been going on for four years. Drought, famine, cholera
and to top it all off, the grasshoppers all at the same time. For four years, we never saw anything like this. Look, they eat grass, roots
and even leaves. People are dying like flies from
hunger and cholera. And the French doctors, they are. Cholera is not racist. There are also French victims. Even Bugeaud died of it in Paris. Reddened carmine eyes. Yanaka your computer. Did you like our work? You us. Well. I am happy with myself. Eddie and Maddie. My Sachem. Sally.
My face. Shit, it won’t
work to be The Who Let. I see you Nacatl Hardy. Andy Shut up. Dual meskina The edge. From the roof.
Did you see how that fact treated me? In the name of private property, you distributed
the collective lands to them. As a result, you broke the tribe. This is the condition for progress towards
a fairer and more modern society. Do you know what they did, the barren
lands you gave them? They sold them to the
settlers for a few cents. And now ? Of course. Go see people here
are superstitious. They say the Arab kingdom
has a bad eye. I’m sorry. Everything you did for
us is turning against us. It’s not our fault, though. Drought, Locusts, Disease. Fate is against us. People say it is God’s revenge
because we did not know defend our land against the infidels. Go tell the governor that if France does nothing,
there will be war here again. Let him know. I’ll tell him. Also tell him that I lost one of
my sons to cholera. and I have trouble stopping the youngest
from going into the mountains. Do you know what that means? Yes,
I do. Know. What is it? No, that’s not it.
How is she? It’s cholera. Go fast. She’s been waiting for you for two days. Ha! Ha! Ha! Ha! Ha! My son. The pride of my life. You came to say goodbye to me. I am here. You will stay. Too late. It is God who chooses the hour. But mine came. I have to tell you a secret remains a secret. Yes, that’s what I’ve carried
in my heart since you were born. Odilon and your father. You must not marry Jeanne. Forgive me if. I have mixed the blood of the infidel with that
of the true fighter of the faith. I was a young slave in the harem. During the Peace of Tafna. Odilon was a doctor
to Abd-el-kader. But you were born. Camel raised you. He taught you how to walk, how
to ride a horse, to use the saber and the rifle. He taught you righteousness and courage. Did he teach you the true religion? He is your father too. This is bad. Analysis. Struggle. Chemical attack. Troubles.

you sleep in the armchair? He made me feel bad about love and harmony in my heart. There, in the framework of the seat where rhyme,
rhyme. I was bound by an oath. Shane will always be in my heart. Promise me one thing,
she mustn’t find out. Never. I’ll
tell you. Promise. But yes! Never Alex I write it to you again Dilana. If she comes here, I will be by your side. You can’t Isa. You would
betray. Have you renounced your religion? I have not renounced my religion. A day will come when in France, one
will be able to be French and Catholic, French and Jewish, French and Muslim. In France ? Maybe not here my son, not in
the land of Islam. The settlers. You are French now, you must
leave and follow your destiny. I am French. But my heart remains in Algeria
forever. My son. Aichi-ken Mouxou. By. Fed up. Fed up. Fed
up. Fed up. Fed up. Fed up. Fed up. Fed
up. Pffffffffffff! Are you hiding something from me? What’s going on? There is another woman. Is that it? Tell me frankly. I’m going to get married. What ? My mother chose a wife for me. I have to accept. It’s tradition, you understand? I don’t believe it. I don’t believe it. I don’t care. What are you going to do
alone in Paris? Eh ? Where are you going to go? You will go to Aunt Ines’s. I’m going to enlist as a nurse. I’m going to the front to
treat the wounded. I too want to defend France. You’re lying to me. Do you want to go find him? Are you going to find your Arab? Aren’t you ashamed to
run after him like that? How dare you? What are you, huh? Your grandmother who gets raped by a Kabyle,
you’re forgetting that one, right? You have Arab blood too, eh? Have the evil Arabs ever
raped women like you? Pfff, I have. It’s a debacle. Everywhere our armies are being beaten: towns
without villages, Reichshoffen, Frœschwiller. What a shame! But it’s the Emperor’s fault! But what a great idea to
go to war with Prussia! Bismarck was only asking for that. The title of the newspaper must be changed. The Emperor was taken prisoner at Sedan. He
abdicated. Gambetta proclaimed the Republic, the
Republic, my friends, the Republic! Come with me! That’s it! Incredible, the Emperor is a prisoner. The Republic proclaimed. A 20-year dream finally come true. Napoleon Dictator! Long live the Republic! No. It’s not going to make him suffer. Go ahead, Mr. Bonapartist Chief Commissioner! You better disappear before
my friends arrive. Do you hear them?
They are very excited. This is not the time to play the hero. Come
on, save yourself! Long live the Republic! But don’t worry. the
Emperor. Where is the chick? Eh
? Where is the fox? Gone. You’re nothing to wait for. The French are fighting among themselves. We should take advantage of this to
throw them into the sea, right? We must find ways to save
the Arab kingdom. The Arab kingdom.
Class. Class. One day, dying of laughter. They call themselves Republicans,
but you know them. They are colonialists, Arabs. Heating Francis’s mouchkila. Wow! We must take advantage of this to stir
up the tribes and drive out the French. Has nothing to do with it. Where there will be. Play.
Bana. Rani like. Diallo said, we will come true. I’ve had enough of your talk. I want to raise my tribes and fight. You, Baya, come with me to Oran. You can’t stay in Algiers anymore. Blabber Baya. Baya. I beg you. Do this for me, it’s too dangerous. I’ll try to get to Paris
on my own. You’ll find me there. I love you. Paris has fallen. The government took refuge in Tours. Pfff.
My God, France is
falling apart. We should proclaim independence! And who sent Garibaldi to us? And Algeria will do it on its own,
like Italy, is that it? You want to leave us alone
facing 3 million Arabs? Thank you so much.
What are the other dispatches? Nothing special. What do you think about. That ?
What do you have? What’s wrong? On the front. The regiments of African hunters,
Algerian riflemen and Zouaves have showed indomitable bravery, but
they paid a heavy price. The second Turko particularly distinguished
himself but was bled dry. The officers died on the
field of honor. Second Turks. This is the D’aïssa regiment. No. I don’t. Don’t want to live. Friends. The military regime is abolished. Well
done ! Well done, well done! Algeria is divided into three departments
where will be applied French laws. The departments will be administered by
a prefect and represented by deputies. The governor. The Governor General will
now be a civilian. Reporting to the Ministry of the Interior. My friends, we have won. Algeria is civil and French. French Algeria. French Algeria. In
Syria. French. French
Algeria. French Algeria. French China. Long live you please. Wait, wait. It is
not. Not.
All. Now, the 33,000. Jews from Algeria will automatically have
French nationality. Will we have the right to vote?
Naturally. The Arabs too.
For now. Nothing is planned. Phew,
I was scared. Shut up! Thousands of Turks and Zouaves have
just died on the battlefields battle and they voted with their blood. I ask for a minute of silence for our Muslim
brothers who died for France. Oh my! There ! There there. There there. There
there. There ! There there there! Why did you hide all this from me? So. Me. I swore. How could you keep it? All
that for. You alone for so long? Ha! Ha Ha! Ha! Ha! Ha! Ha! Ha!
Ha ha ha ha ha! Ha! Ha! Ha! Ha! Ha! Ha! Ha! Ha! My dear father, if you are reading this letter,
it is because I died on the field of honor. No need to cry. It is with joy that I offer to France this
life that you have given me and from whom I no longer expect anything. I will finally rest in peace, under
the protection of the two deities who presided over my birth and my death,
the Almighty God of the Arabs
who commands good and evil, and the merciful God of Christians who
forgives everything to poor sinners. I am writing to remind
you of your oath. Jeanne must never know, Never. Farewell. Your son Aïssa. What happened? Why did he reject me? Oh ! Oh ! Oh ! Oh Oh Oh Oh Oh! And there, Larbi! Stop right there, Larbi! Stop right there, Larbi! Lena. Rabin. Bad. Bad Day four. Final four or five. Yes. Open. I’m looking for myself.
Everywhere. I don’t know where to go anymore. Between. It’s you. And Baya. Pffffffffffffffffff. She left with her father for Oran. Why didn’t you bring him with you? I would have taken care of her. Have you eaten? No. I’m not hungry. I’ll make a bed for you. You can’t stay in Algeria any longer,
they’ll kill you. You’re going to spend the night here. Tomorrow I’ll find you
a boat to Spain. Pffffffffff. Pfffffff. Pfff. Pfff. Pfffffffff. Pffffffffff. Pfffffff. I
paid for it. Half, here’s the other one. You will give them only upon arrival. That’s a safe conduct. You
never know. And a gun. This may be useful to you. THANKS. What a beautiful country our country is! What happened to
us says a lot? The life. Do you remember? Menilmontant. The marriage of East and West. Why did you give up
on our ideal? Utopia? The Arab kingdom is not a utopia. On the contrary, it is realism. You’ll see, you’ll realize
it one day too. Why do you always throw me away? Your
ideal. In the figure? My
ideal is as good as yours. You want to do. From
this. Earth. A piece. From
France? Make republican France one of liberty,
equality and fraternity. Your freedom, your liberty, is the right of
the strongest to oppress the weakest. Not necessarily. The Republican School will make good
French people out of these Arabs. It will take time, certainly,
but I have confidence. I’m going. Chimera. Do you want to make them good French
people and not good Algerians? Do you want to make them good French
people in spite of themselves? You won’t make it. Time will tell which of
us was right. It is God who decides, Inshallah. Yes. Yes. Yes.
Yes! Did he want barbarism? Is Marine Le Cimarron Bassatine? And All Saints’ Day?
What happened to him? I never saw him again. I was told that he had
returned to Algeria. How so? He continued his journey alone. It
looks like him. You never saw him again? He was your friend though. Basically, you see,
I never left him. You know, you need some. Utopians as you say. Dreamers.
Without them, there would be no world.
Forgive me. I have to go now. It’s a little cold in here,
don’t you think? If. Yes, I assure you.
It’s always like this. After a while, the cold gets to you. It’s terrible. Pffff. Not. Wrong. Not bad.
Ha! Ha! Ha! And there, like Colby. Red eyes. By the. Moore’s Law.
