SHOSHIMIN: How to Become Ordinary | Life Is Daijoubu #80
very end of the show they show a van on fire it’s like well [ __ ] I gotta watch season two that’s what got you was just the van on fire it’s like I want to know why that van’s on fire oh my god how’s beginning after the end still poopy Magoo oh shoot i could talk about this for a while you ready for it hello everybody and welcome to Life is Daou episode 80 we’re at a big number it’s not the biggest number because there’s a lot bigger numbers in 80 but we’re we’re up there this is an anime podcast my name is Cole and I’m joined by um somebody who woke up way too early to just go hit some balls with sticks it wasn’t it was not it was his cousin Fernando just kidding it’s Zay you You guys know Zay right he’s never been on this show yeah he’s never been on this show let me tell you like anime that that uh I’m not going to I’m not going to say that that’s a little too offensive did you have a good golf sky yeah it was fun it was a beautiful day i touched a lot of grass yeah did you hit some holes i hit some holes um I lost some balls said hi to an old man that watched how poorly I played and said he played worse so that made me feel a little better nice nice we’re also joined by another man who woke up early to watch and be disappointed by the Xbox showcase disappointed but you didn’t get your Cojima i mean your Who was it it was fine but you got you got Cojima yeah the horror cojima horror game i was expecting that didn’t get it but it was fine i see elder Scrolls thing elder Scrolls Online elder Scrolls Online the little kitten and Game Freak oh yeah Game Freak making a new game making games it’s summer awards season not awards season uh showcase season so they’re showing off new games the worst part about that new Game Freak game is that it looks like a Soulslike hey that’s that’s that’s that’s we’re we’re good here you guys aren’t going to enjoy it it’s Game Freak it’s got a It’s going to have a really fun gameplay loop or something like that that’s like really top tier but the rest of the game is going to be like kind of janky there’s going to be something weird with it like your character walks too slow or your characters clip through the wall or something yeah when I walk up and swing my sword it phases through gamers you’ll have that but you’ll also have alongside of it one of the best gameplay loops you’ve played in a while just so be prepared okay yeah uh also with anime news they also announced a solo leveling game yes they did well no technically it’s not a new game oh it’s a it’s a revamp of a mobile game i think it was on the PC regardless I don’t know where it was i All I know is that this was a it’s a port to console is what this is so maybe it was mobile is it strange that Game Freak’s paired up with Xbox or have they done that no that I think it’s just uh I think someone else is publishing it they’re just reviewing it publishers yeah oh not all those games are partnered with Microsoft they just paid him say “Hey want to show your game on our show?” Yeah like that solo leveling game that’s definitely like a Namco band I think but I don’t know who it was but yeah yeah so that was fun we got to enjoy that and um this morning also the Summer Games Fest gotcha games everywhere gotcha games everywhere anime looking games there was at least two Genchin Impact um lookalikes yeah Withering Waves was one of them wthering Waves I believe is like a year or two old now but it barely like released on PC or something also they had Sai Tomlin in one of the games which name I forgot he was in one of the games i don’t remember the game either i just remember being like “Oh look it’s uh Boros.” Was it a fighting game i don’t remember it was a gotcha game I think and then Boros shows up and I’m like “Oh where’s Saitama?” And then he walks in frame i’m like there he is i wasn’t I don’t know i guess it didn’t get me it didn’t make me go I must download this game and gotcha my life away yeah that beautiful bald man didn’t do it for you didn’t do it for me it’s tough we got an anime podcast for you guys today we’ll be talking about Shosimin shoi mean how to become ordinary the first 10 episodes just season one we’ll be spoiling it and talking all about it our thoughts our unfiltered opinions look forward to that as well as the traditional seasonal talk and a little bit of news we got a little bit there’s one specific story that I find interesting and I want to talk about with you guys so before we get into that interesting story let’s do the the rundown of things that got announced as animes number one I’m a curse crafter and I don’t need an S rank party it’s totally a light bulb you guys got debated it was a manga oh wow debated dang it well nine 99 out of a 100 times that’s a lot absolutely you’re not wrong is it Is it Is it drenched in fan service i don’t know i didn’t see too much about it to be honest next up is Wash It All Away manga manga yes manga those are the only two I could find just from running through them real quick there’s a lot of things that looked like they were getting um film adaptations i decided not to bo throw them on we don’t really talk too much about films too often very rarely anyway but yeah so two mang or two mangas becoming anime which is neat and then another one we have is a manga ending in two chapters and it’s a popular one which is why I decided to bring it up um do you have any guesses thing i don’t know is it is it a weekly shonen jump one it’s not weekly shonen jump is it Kodancha it is a shonen or a shuisha title but it’s not weekly shonen jump i can’t I don’t know it is Kaiju number eight oh [ __ ] ending in two chapters um honestly like that’s actually that’s actually makes sense they’ve been on the fin this final arc for like forever for a while and I have I have issues with the way that they are currently publishing it cuz like taking hiatuses man like I’ll I’m going to tell you the ending without spoiling the ending more or less so you have this thing where Kofka his main character has to punch a guy right so you have a whole chapter of talking about Kofka you got to punch this guy he’s like “Yeah I’m going to punch the guy.” Next episode or next chapter we got a little backstory of why you got to punch this guy next chapter all right I’m gearing up to punch the guy and that’s the end of the chapter I just read it was him going like this milk it for as long as he can and so I’m just like why do we get four chapters of him preparing to punch a guy so is Dragon Ball at its worst ever like that thing no dragon Ball’s very fast the manga is actually very fast-paced okay see this will be good as an anime because in an anime you’ll get that all within an episode and instead of having to wait for two months to do that because it’s bi-weekly and like things said there’s a lot of like delays and hiatuses and stuff with it honestly it’s a fine it’s a fine one it’s not like uh revolutionary I would say but like it’s a fun read yeah it’s a fun read we get two chapters left um which is interesting i think next chapter is going to have to wrap it all up or they don’t have an epilog unless it’s going to be like how they did My Hero and do epilog later on and that doesn’t count as the two chapters who knows i need to throw that farther maybe they’ll do an extra longer one extra longer chapter maybe yeah a web series they don’t have to be bound by um the book pages yeah book pages they do whatever long they want and then you said that um my dress up darling ended too yeah I didn’t finish that one i think honestly a couple months ago now oh it’s been that long it’s been a bit oh I don’t I was going to watch the anime of that for next season fun why’d you shake your head like that oh I didn’t I didn’t mean to say like no i was just like don’t watch it do not watch it in hindsight it was weird I shook my head like that but no I was just agreeing yeah it is it’s a fun one i don’t Your body was contradictory to your words maybe it’s cuz I was thinking about like how horny the anime gets and I kind of like shook my head at that as I was saying it yeah it’s great it’s great it’s a fun one that’s not a bad one to watch the manga was a it was fine the wrap up of the ending was felt kind of sudden but it was more like a uh eh we’re done we don’t got nothing else to say they’re kind of the story’s been done for a while let’s actually just wrap it up for realies now it’s kind of what it felt like to me anyway last bit of news we have and this is an interesting one and Skyler I know you are someone who has suffered from the results of this news and it is that Manga had an enormous DMCA takedown and over I think it was 7,000 titles have been taken down from their site dang i wanted to read I hope I wonder if some of those aren’t affected because I wanted to read some of those on the website what are your What are your overall thoughts on this it’s uh kind of unfortunate especially if um they’re not licensed because that’s really the only way to read them in English sometimes is those websites but that’s my biggest they were licensed then I can understand like I’m more than happy to pay for stuff i um I don’t really necessarily like like how Kodancha does it where you have to pay for chapters i know that’s just the typical way in Japan that’s how they do it but a lot of this stuff we can’t freaking read that’s how we have to do it is get fan translations it’s not especially if they go out of print like say you get a manga you get a few volumes like “Wow this is great.” And you find out it’s out of print or they stop the translation official so it’s like well got to go somewhere else i think manga is just at a such a weird place for Americans because we get a lot of good stuff like a lot of popular stuff but if you’re reading more niche stuff that people are talking about online like good freaking luck yeah i want to I want to like briefly go over the history of the past like four or five years of manga in America or I guess in the west rather because I find it fascinating just like in hindsight how far it’s grown right so when we first got into it it was fairly niche but it slow it was basically right at the cusp of it boiling over and becoming a lot more popular and hard to get we would go to Barnes & Noles we’d pick up our volumes that we were liking um if we found a series that we were interested in the only really option we had was to go to manga decks to read our manga through there and nine times out of 10 it was the scan translations it was somebody scanned the Japanese version they uh took every page into Photoshop whited out all of the the text redrrew the lines where they needed to and then put text in English over the top of it all so that we could read it in English obviously had some that were bad and some were way too overdone for for the for the fact they were doing it for free which is sad in my mind that they put so much effort into it for for it to just be free it’s very much a hobby it’s very much a hobby yeah and yeah that was the way you would read some of those manga and then like Skyler said say you were getting into a series that was still currently um publishing and we didn’t have any official published manga week by week really at the time um it took like another couple years into that so about two years I think maybe maybe three years ago maybe maybe around four closer to four maybe we got in like five or six years ago it’s been a while but probably like three or four years ago is when Shonen Jump started putting their entire weekly magazine on the Shonen Jump app every single week and from there on like that set the standard like this is what we do this is how we get our manga in America this is how we get our weekly stuff and then obviously we have uh Jump Plus which has kind of followed suit with that and also provided a really cool and easy great access way to read this manga these mangas for free which is awesome and also we get stuff as it’s released as well there too from other magazines not just from uh weekly Shonen Jump so overall like it’s crazy how much it’s progressed from literally almost nothing to the the whole entire um ecosystem of being able to access and read manga now you did bring up the Kodancha situation i still find that very interesting um I want to compare that to another thing that I’ve learned about recently which is called Top Us it’s a uh a web comic uh application where the PE people will draw and create their web comics and then they can publish them they also have um remember they have like web novels Saturday like strips newspaper strips in there they got lots of stuff there but like for comics for for example you do have to pay per chapter as they come out but it’s less than a dollar per chapter like if you put a dollar in you’re probably getting three to four chapters um of your comic and I in my mind I thought “Yeah that’s completely fine if they were doing it with Kodancha I I would be much more happier to do this i’d be much more happy to pay.” But it’s closer to like $2 for us I believe for a Kodancha um thing and that makes it it feels kind of bad i don’t know why and here’s my thought too because I was thinking the same thing why does it feel bad to pay a dollar per chapter but some manga volumes we buy are like four or five chapters for 13 bucks i think the only reason is a physical media feels good in your hands and then b a lot of these chapters you blow through so fast as you read through them weekly that you probably spend a total of like five minutes max on a chapter whereas if you have the the actual book in your hand you take you kind of take your time a lot more often with the pages you know you look there’s extra stuff too that are always in like the back you get some bonus stuff here and there as well yeah my question so I have a question for you then with Kodancha specifically do you own the manga you purchase or can that at any point just go bye-bye i think you own the chapter so like if you ever want to just go back and read it you can just go back and read it so you can like download that off of the app somehow oh well it’s it’s not going to be like that what is that that’s um what’s it called when you have access to a game you download the game and then DRM drm yeah that’s like DRM i I guarantee you it’s not DRM free so then you buying the manga chapters you don’t own them sure i don’t think that’s how it is okay i don’t think like the majority of online distributed media I don’t think has DRM or has DRM so you want know you want best about um manga or books you buy they’re pictures and pictures can be made into paper so just buy a bunch of paper you got to do not do that do not listen to this man do not listen to this man yeah i don’t know i think it’s tough like I definitely prefer if I could have it my way i would love to have a like a manga library that I can go and just pay a subscription like get your library card and just just check out any manga that I want all the time that I would that would be like my ideal i would love that but I know we’re not going to get there i actually found an easier solution it’s digital so I have to do is just screenshot and then maybe put on like a hard drive or something you have collection just for the backup as a monster d it’s cheaper than printing them all off that’s how you show That’s how you show them you got DRM free copies i got I got screenshots baby honestly when it comes down to that I don’t know like once you read a series very rarely do I ever care enough to like want to keep it right that’s why I like the library idea in my head anyway cuz I can just take it back i’m not I don’t have to pay like I’m not buying a volume of manga to see if I like it because once you buy a volume of manga good luck selling that individual volume it’s not fun to try to sell a volume of manga it’s one of the hardest stupid things to sell nobody wants a book no nobody wants a used book I should say rather yeah so overall like that’s the that’s the situation mangadex is slowly dying there are so many things man it’s crazy like when you think about the world of like scan translator or fan fan translations what a crazy world that is i literally remember like I think it was Kaguya Sama that I was reading week by week and like I remember seeing like at the end of every chapter they have like little pages for all of the different people that worked on it they talk about their thoughts about that chapter i’m just like man they are putting so much effort into this like holy cow some have really unfunny memes depending on the translating a lot of work just got nuked yeah a lot of work just got nuked i I guarantee you the people that worked on them have them probably they probably have backups because they know they probably know that at any moment this could go down in my head though I just I’m just thinking like well you took down Manga Deck something else is going to pop up or these publishers should just find a way to provide and and I know it’s because the US is probably just small fish compared to the Japanese manga market maybe not maybe I’m wrong i don’t know i think we are very small fish we’re definitely not their priority no but at that point though like if you’re not going to provide a service and this this is like I’ve just decided as of right now anyway that piracy is just because of a bad service or lack of Gabriel said like uh piracy is not a he said something like piracy is like a service issue he said something before but something like that yeah and I’m I think I’m completely on board with that because I just want to consume things the easiest way possible as legit and legal as I can and the easiest way for me to read stuff right now anyways through like the Shonen Jump app or Shona Jump Plus or um what’s the other one they came out with there’s a third one they came the Viz Media app v yeah Viz Media app so I don’t know it’s It sucks that’s That’s where we’re at it’s funny that we always take a dump on the K manga app because like it’s so close it’s so close to just being exactly what we want i think one of the weird parts about it to me is how they have all these weird like schemes and stuff on there where it’s all like “Oh watch this video 10 times and you can read the chapter for free or whatever you get your points from watching this video or uh downloading this game and you play an hour of it you can get this many points and stuff i don’t like it when things do that i remember that kind of crap in like high school and thinking back then like this is weird when these companies are trying to get you to do this kind of stuff here’s a here’s a more fuller detail quote from Gabe Newell the easiest way to stop piracy is not by putting antipiriracy technology into work it’s by giving these people a service that’s better than what they’re receiving from the pirates that’s a good that’s a good Yeah K manga is so close all they got to do is like dude even monthly pricing people love their monthly pricings like it’s cuz it’s they get a ton of stuff yeah for cheap for a fee a monthly fee it’s like even looking at the Shonen Jump app though dude it’s like two bucks or three did they raise the price a dollar it’s It’s three bucks yeah three bucks a month for their for the entirety of One Piece and on top of that like you get the newest chapters for free if you don’t even pay right and I haven’t paid for a while because Oh yeah all the stuff that I’m reading I’m up to date on same and there’s a lot there’s I mean I don’t know what the the crossover is between Jump Plus and and just the Shonen Jump app but there’s a lot of stuff on Shonen Jump that’s also on Jump Plus that I can read for free through the ticket service yes like I’m reading Dandan right now through that yep i wish K manga had a ticket thing so so bad there’s a lot of things on there I would like to read and I just wish I could but I can’t because well I mean I could but like I just it their what their app doesn’t feel good to use it doesn’t I don’t know i it feels weird putting your money into that app i don’t know why i don’t I can’t really place it but so there’s something weird about it that doesn’t feel great i don’t know i’d much rather just buy the physical books that they put out because they I think their books are some of the better quality ones well and it would end up being cheaper overall just to wait for the series to finish public publishing physically like take something like Rent a Girlfriend what are we at 200 and something chapters yeah well the 300 I think 300 you’d be over $300 then you’ve put into just that one manga alone that said it’s like close to 30 volumes that’s true a lot we’re looking at like $300 worth of book right there i think it adds up to roughly around the same that’s like a volume and that’s probably why the pro that’s probably why it’s an issue is that and it’s the same like if we want to compare to something I think it’s the same reason with video games it feels bad to pay full price for a digital video game because you don’t really get anything you just get the game whereas you can put $60 down on your physical game and it feels good cuz like cool I got the thing i’ll put it on the shelf you know same thing with a manga you get the manga like cool I got the manga and in some case you get the bonus stuff but you put it on the shelf and it looks good with a digital manga you buy an entire volume for the same price you are with the physical volume it doesn’t feel as good you just get a title and app once again I’m gonna freaking tug off Viz a little bit more because like they did it good again if you buy a phys or a digital volume of manga from Viz’s website I think it’s like not half the price but I think it’s close to like 60% of the physical price should we just look i want to say like if if because they raised it up to like 11.99 or something like that and 11.99 I think is like $7.99 for a digital volume i think Viz just has it down because like we trans we bring manga to you we give it at a reasonable price so I just clicked on Sakamoto days this is on Shonen Jump by the way i don’t know what it is on Viz but it’s $6.99 for volume $6.99 and I think it’s like $10.99 or 11.99 for a physical so it’s close to like 60% off or excuse me 40% off of the the physical price for a volume if you want to get the digital and if Kodancha did that with their digital stuff I’d be much more interested in that that said there is one thing that Kodancha does that is very rarely for really very rarely looked at which is um the what’s it called the humble bundle stuff m you’ll see Kodanchona stuff digital humble bundle a lot like you can get almost entire series for like 30 bucks digitally just through humb humble bundle I don’t think it applies to their app I think it’s some other app or something you have to read it on but there are ways to get digital kodona stuff for a lot cheaper like the humble bundle stuff so it not completely horrible but I want the app to just be better you know maybe I should download again and try it out and see what it’s Like well the other thing too though is like how this is just a a rhetorical question but how do you get creators that you enjoy to continue making things you give them money you give them money you support them and when you read stuff as legit as possible hopefully that money ends up back in their pocket or it tells publishers “Hey this thing’s kind of popular keep doing it.” Yeah i don’t know i think at this point we’re starting to beat the dead horse you could honestly just go back to our K manga talk that we did that one time and really just like get into this whole conversation even more so I imagine is the Crunchyroll manga app still pretty bad was it ever good it was It was dead for a while did they I I know they said they were bringing it back i don’t know if it’s back yet or not so it’s dead it’s gone it wasn’t very good so yeah I think it was all within the same map too i mean I could like pull it up real quick to see if it’s even there at one point in time you could read the entirety of Attack on Titan on that app that was great let’s see if Crunch because they have games it’s interesting that there’s not more publishers out there that own the rights to all of these that aren’t doing anything with them i don’t see any possible way to do manga i can’t even see the games right now oh there there there’s the games i found the games yeah I don’t see manga on here so I’m assuming i was I was also reading Space Brothers on that app on the Crunch app and uh when it went away and I stopped paying for Crunch I was like I’ll just read on manga decks of course the manga decks aren’t manga uh translations aren’t as like up todate or reliable to like get get it the only legal place you can get those upto-date chapters was through K manga it’s currently through Kang Manga that one probably got sniped off the website so now either I have to wait for the whole thing to like get uploaded to see how it ends or we just completely forget i am curious or bite the bullet but pay pay the chapters in K manga i am curious to go back to Konga and see if anything’s changed since then because I remember even like things being an issue where like they had censored the entire page for some things and like why would I ever pay for that like that sounds horrible to pay for like I’m fine if you want to censor something go for it but don’t do it the way you were doing it i just do like subtleness where it don’t cover up half of the artwork of the page that I paid for a black blur yeah with literally just like you got Microsoft Paint the black paintbrush you’re just going over everything i remember the the manga up where it’s like they censored kneecaps cuz they thought it looked like cleavage it was like AI they were doing AI censorship yeah and so it’s just that’s what probably partly why it does feel bad as well for Konga because it’s just a bad service in general I don’t know that’s that’s kind of our thoughts on it i guess we can move on we we like I said we beat that dead horse we were splurging a little too hard um let’s talk quickly about some seasonal stuff do you guys have any seasonal talk you want to talk about while you think about it I can throw out something i like Oh you got some Oh sorry yeah uh I like the Apothecary Diaries it’s It’s at a very uh intense moment right now are you caught up with the Japanese version like the dub the Japanese sub yeah Skyler reads or Skyler watches dub i’m four episodes behind two and I’m I’m only going to catch up with two because I’m watching the dub okay so he gets two episodes behind because he’s on the dub but I concur with what you’re saying Dane the sub right now where the sub is at like some peak peak show going on right now so the last episode happened something really dark happens like dang yeah that’s really dark it’s a good one i It’s It’s really hard to not talk about it i already spoiled one thing on accident it was like a minor thing so I got lucked out but it’s it’s uh it’s good it’s really good um the show that I wanted to briefly talk about is um can a boy girlfriend relationship survive um so I started this series and I was really like dang this is fun i like the characters i’m really into this and then like I don’t know it’s just the classic classic romcom where you get about four five six seven episodes in it starts feeling that lull it’s like nothing’s happening we’re not doing anything unique or different and it’s just not that great anymore and it was pretty rough this most recent episode felt pretty good but like it’s nowhere near like the excitement I had for the series from the first couple episodes i don’t know where I don’t know where the magic went i really don’t there was something really fun about it and it kind of fell fell off pretty hard in my mind it’s it’s unfortunate but hey I guess that just tends to be the way with the the classic or traditional I guess if you will romcom umesque anime/manga how’s beginning after the end still poopy me oh shoot i could talk about this for a while you ready for it yeah are you watching the is is is that your trash I’m watching because I’m also I also watch trash should just finished are you watching beginning after the end no I watch I was watching Bye-Bye Earth didn’t make sense up until the end and it finally ended i was like don’t have to watch this anymore so I have recently started becoming an even bigger fan of this series i’ve read the comics and I’m caught up on the comics that’s where I learned about the Tapa stuff by the way i I read them all probably about a year or two ago and I got caught up again recently after I got caught up again I was like “Okay let’s listen to the the actual novel.” I’ve been listening to the novel on audiobook and so I’m into this series the anime is a is a sad little thing that exists with the same name um they do things so strangely they’ll have entire episodes and entire moments that are minor things in the in the original the story like the episode I think it was episode 8 the entire episode revolved around one character and like helping that character gain the ability to use magic and the whole like the the mind games and aspects of that uh plot scenario weren’t even present so it’s this little girl the the parents aren’t magic people and they want the little girl to be a magic person so the parents like hey or the the main character goes hey I can help your daughter get magic if you give me something in return in the series none of that happens they just he just helps her get magic cuz just cuz they gave her a whole episode for no reason she’s literally one of the most minor characters in the series and they just gave her a whole episode most recent episode happened they changed probably one of my favorite moments from the early series pretty heavily but also kind of kept it intact but it feels like a a pale imitation of it like it doesn’t feel very good it doesn’t have the same weight that it in my opinion should it’s I don’t know overall it’s not It’s just sad it makes you feel bad to watch it that sucks yeah I hate to see it you do hate to see it what about you Skyler one of the ones that I’m really enjoying that was like and I think I’ve talked about it before but I’m going to say it again cuz I don’t care is Cowoon Romance it’s so good dude it’s so much fun and it’s like it’s a love story but there’s so much more to it where it almost doesn’t even feel like a love story at times it’s more of like a mystery of like what the hell is going on yeah it’s definitely a mystery and right now I haven’t watched the latest episode i haven’t either but uh where it’s at is like man my my brain gears are turning i want to see what happens next it’s slowly opening the floods gates and we’re getting more information trying to connect more pieces and it’s like where’s this going where is it going it’s going somewhere it’s going somewhere i remember being like fairly interested in that after you guys hyped it up and I’m still kind of interested in it but I don’t know like what’s the hook like hook me on it right now like try to sell it to me oh first episode wait hold on pause because I feel like the twist is really fun i feel like just experience it just exper one twist yeah just watch episode one if you’re not hooked by then then it’s not for me well it kind of keeps unraveling to where you’re like “Wait what?” And they just give you little bits sure would episode one hook me though yeah probably says so i liked it yeah if it doesn’t then probably not but I I I guarantee that if if you’re watch episode one you’re not hooked by then then I guess it doesn’t work but I was like whoa what wait no no no wait what i’m curious about another show I know you two are watching as well that I try that I wasn’t super in tune it’s Lazarus i watched episode one of Lazarus and thought like the choreography was kind of cool but the major plot point was interesting but I didn’t give a crap about any of the characters and I didn’t really give me any reason to keep going with it it’s It’s shallow and points i still feel that way shallow and what you just described you don’t care about the characters you just kind of like have a passing interest in the plot i like the action i like the music the choreography like there’s a lot of cool things that happen but it’s like I don’t know half the characters names everyone’s trying to do stuff i don’t know what makes you keep watching that then just cuz fun mindless entertainment okay turn my brain off and listen to jazz music while I’m reminded of Bbop recently I’ve had a hard time watching something unless I can get any investment in it like if I watch it through episode one and don’t care about anything I have it’s I have a really hard time getting back to that show i’ll tell you one that I haven’t gone back to is uh Devil May Cry i want to go back to it like I watched episode one like this freak Oh I guess I watched episode two with Luke we watched two episodes and it was like wow this is freaking cool actionpacked never went back i’m going to I want to go binge that’s one I’m going to binge before the end of the season cuz it’s already everything’s already out it was on Netflix i see well speaking of a show that was hard to go back to um I think it’s now time we talk about Shoiman How to Become Ordinary the first 10 episodes of uh just season 1 so all spoilers for just season 1 we won’t be talking past episode 10 let’s uh let’s dive into it as you can tell based on my my early uh comments I don’t have great thoughts about this this series i’ll quickly give off the the I don’t think that was Was that on camera when you said that like no just barely i just barely said I said speaking of a show that was hard to go back to oh oh okay never mind um so the quick synopsis is uh you got two characters um boy girl do you guys remember their names uh I think the girl was named Oai osai osai and uh Oh I can’t remember no dude i don’t know wolf wolf girl and fox boy yeah boy and girl so they are unique in weird ways and they are trying their best to not be unique in weird ways and more or less the entire synopsis of the story is those two get into situations and the boy likes to try to solve the situations using deduction and reasoning they set this up to like I thought we were going somewhere completely different with where this show went it really stuck to the title i thought it was a romance i didn’t think that i thought it was like I thought it was going to be a romance too i thought it was going to be like a like a murder mystery investigative like these two used to be like childhood prodigies i my brain went to death not like that this is L and that’s and I saw the cover art and I saw the title and I was like oh yeah those two are hooking up like this is going to be a fun little romance i don’t look at the tags or anything i didn’t know nothing about this i just saw like a clip or something and it looked really pretty and I’m like those two look like could be cute together this could be a fun little romance let’s watch it they drew it in letter box yeah so I guess let’s briefly talk about the best part of the whole show um which is obviously the animation the art style and the cinematography everything about this show looks phenomenal it just you can’t look at this show and think it’s ugly there is not one single frame of this entire show that looks bad i think you’d be really hardressed to find a frame that looks nasty every single thing looks good the art is really really clean the backgrounds are really really good the character designs are honestly spectacular i’m really impressed with everything about it even the side characters like you get introduced like within the last two episodes or last episode a new character that I’m assuming is more prevalent in season 2 and he’s got all this like unique character design in like where was this like how’d you come up with a new character in what episode like all of this crazy design aspect like I said the cinematography was very interesting they chose some very specific shots to have different meanings and different feelings behind them um overall looks phenomenal and that’s about as far as my praises really go like the story was unique there were some interesting things here and there but I just didn’t give a crap about them i really didn’t and Skyler put it best last night when I was talking to you over we were on Discord you said “Oh what was it?” You were like “Oh finally something happened.” Seven episodes seven episodes and then it was still It was kind of a nothing burger kind of a nothing burger yeah um I was more interested in those like serious plots like “Oh they stole someone stole her bike and they tried to like get it’s like turns out it was an illegal ring of like getting illegal licenses.” Like hey that’s interesting let’s lean more to that next episode who ate these m who ate our cupcakes before that it’s like why is there a dirty spoon in here let’s figure that out it’s like I I don’t care see I thought those early episodes were them setting us up for like these guys they know what they’re doing yeah yeah they’re like investigative pro proteges and we’re going to be solving some murder mysteries and then we kept going to like who ate the cupcakes why why is why is the spoon not wet yeah it’s like oh my god um so I found it interesting that they didn’t try to have more connections between the different mysteries if you will there was very little connections there were connections but not as much as I would have hoped like if there were connections it was because the arc um was a little bit larger than you thought it was like the best example I have for that is the very last one where the girls kidnapped the little girl um we have Ko i remember his name for some reason ko is like spying on them because his girlfriend said his sister was getting involved with Kobota kobota that’s his name kobota kobota kobota that’s the main boy’s name okay sorry so Ken goes spying on these girls because he hears that his girlfriend’s sister’s getting involved with them and they’re drug users or something so he’s like trying to make sure that his sister’s uh his girlfriend’s sister is okay and so that obviously progresses into the arc with uh um Osanai and her getting kidnapped and then obviously it culminates with her essentially her being the mad orchestra or who orchestrator not mad or mad conductor who orchestrated the entire kidnapping essentially and that was fun but man how cool would it have been if like they get to that shop and they like “There’s a car here.” What why did Why did somebody need a car earlier who was trying to get their license to get a car earlier hm oh yeah we could have tied it back into the dude that stole the bike and like had more interesting things back in there and no it’s just all self-contained things everything is self-contained i just don’t I don’t know i wanted something more sustenance I guess is what I was looking for well teach us why they’re trying to be I don’t want NCIS i want True Detective well show us why they’re trying to be ordinary what was the turning point like why how are they so observant and smart why are this way what happened to them you do get that for Kobota Kob Kobato whatever his boy’s name you get it for boy you see him being all like “And this is how it was done.” He’s like in middle school he’s like “And this is how you I solved the problem and he did it.” And everybody’s like “Yeah you did it.” we were kind of a freak and he’s just like “Oh and now I’m going to be ordinary.” And that was it that’s all we got the then the girl it’s like “Yeah she’s a psychopath and uh if you cross her she’ll uh she’ll ever you up she will get you dude i I wish we should have seen that maybe she like murders someone.” I don’t know yeah we don’t get any of that dark and so man I I was I was convinced there was something more to this series i really was i was about like four or five episodes in and I’m just all like they’re animal spirits the ones the fox the ones the dog they’re going to become them at the end that’s why they’re trying to become ordinary because they made this pact so that they could become humans and they will be ordinary humans no none of that i thought the same thing i’m like maybe they’re aliens and they’re trying to blend in dude I was convinced i’m just like cuz we have the intro and it’s just them hopping around as dogs and fox i’m like they have the eyes that means they’re telling us that those are them and we’re going to it’s all symbolic it’s just symbolic and I was like even more like I was just I was subscribed to this this freaking Kool-Aid for so long too it wasn’t until the fact we saw Osanai’s mom and I was just like “Oh she is a normal human being isn’t she?” Because we never saw Kubat’s parents we just knew that his family owned the confectionary shop or whatever his family you know he’s a dog so he didn’t have family i think we’re sorry go ahead th You know what’s funny like this show like it can work in a high school um there’s a Ryan John’s movie i haven’t seen it but I’ve heard good things called Brick just a high school kid trying to solve a murder it’s like yeah that could work let’s have somebody die so where I where I got turned off from this show was like because like I said I gave the first couple episodes leeway because I was like “Okay they’re going to they’re building us up to showing us how observant cool the characters are boom we’re going to get a murder or something or drug heist or a bust or something then we get the whole bike episode i’m just like well the dude stole the bike oh oh the dude’s involved with maybe illegal activity are they doing drug are we getting into a drug crime even the Kobat was like starting to theorize like different things that could be going on and then just like that solved well it’s just a bunch of kids goofing around they tried to get licensed or whatever the hell you know it didn’t even matter it didn’t matter it got solved like and we didn’t even see it it’s like here’s a newspaper clipping yep these guys got arrested yeah and I’m just like dude what and then I was like okay well maybe now we’re getting into the crime stuff cuz that was the first crime no back to cupcakes back to cupcakes oh dude this show just kept tugging on me just tugged me so funny thing about that it’s like man this show like had things but it’s like I was not interested and then at the very end of the show they show a van on fire it’s like well [ __ ] now I got to watch season two that’s what got you was just the van on fire it’s like I want to know why that van’s on fire oh my god i started watching season two that’s how nothing burger the show was is the van on fire got thing to watch more like finally something happened an explosion without spoiling anything did you see the why the van was on fire i haven’t got to that far how many episodes i think like it’s five episodes in there still on that mystery okay of the van yeah who’s like and like and now they’re lighting other things on fire and then they got the two new characters interest in the last episode so there’s just a pyroman on the loose right now yeah but it’s not like it doesn’t feel like um intense enough i think they need more intensity that this show just feel too subdued for the type of show they’re trying to do for as good as this show looks it was a let down because they could have made with better writing and cooler like like you’re saying more intense moment like like do like uh case closed like yeah it’s about kids but people get murdered in that show kaiichi case files people get the people get kids fight and that’s like all of anime is kids doing things that adults probably should but they don’t i remember I did I did watch Kaiichi Case Files like the reboot a while ago and um I remember there’s one scene where it’s like they’re at this uh retreat like this uh study group and there’s a serial killer murdering the students and I remember one where a guy gets impaled on a bamboo shoot it’s like oh that’s dark i remember that because it was like it was memorable but and then the next episode they’re like stuck in a death game it’s like this is cool this compared to this it’s like yeah some kids who ate the peanut butter and jelly sandwich my peanut butter sandwich i don’t need the the mysteries to be like super dark or even like super like um uh breaking up drug busting and stuff like that you know i don’t actually need it to be that i wasn’t even really looking for that i just wanted characters i didn’t really get that we got like glimpses of what could have been a character but they didn’t they gave the the horrible backstory of the kid just being a freaking uh what are they called when they wear the eye patches and they’re like trying to be all a chunibu he just he freaking just chuny delusions over here and he’s that’s all it was that was the backtory he was just a freaking chunib and he decided he wanted to be an ordinary dude we don’t really know why freaking other girl like the little girl is psychotic but she just wants to kill everybody who crosses her we don’t know any why she’s that way and like to be fair their characters are pretty boring and bland they kind of had a good chemistry because they bounced off of each other’s boring and blandness but you can only go so far with some boring and bland characters yeah I thought we were going to get like some sort of Sherlock Holmesesque something i was convinced we were getting some good good food here i even I even joked like when I watched the first episode like I joked like “Hey watch that show they kill a guy.” straight up kill a guy it’s like no I’m just joking i wish that happened he says that to me and I I hadn’t even seen the episode yet i just assumed it was still a romance i’m like they kill people in the romance not a romance this show is like you go to a restaurant you look at the picture and you’re like “Oh my god that’s going to be the best freaking cheeseburger I’ve ever eaten.” And you get it you get the cheeseburger it looks like the picture and it looks like the picture but then you take a bite it’s cold well I wouldn’t even say it’s cold it’s kind of just like it’s just seasoned poorly it’s not even seasoned very well the buns are kind of stale because they left them out of it they left out all the toppings you just got the burger it taste tastes uh Yeah it just tastes like really stale they didn’t even bring the bun for some reason they actually they give it to you and then they take the bun away it’s the hamburg steak only um they don’t even give you fork and knife you got I’ll tell you another one of my favorite parts too that I thought was really cool was the outro the intro and outro I really liked like the outro where it’s just a bunch of like real real places and they animate the characters in it how fun was that how fun of a show would that be i think I’m convinced I want one of like somebody goes out and films a full-on movie and then animates characters into the real world you know how you do it you film a movie with real people in the places and just draw over the top over them that was a show they had one time called Flowers of Evil they rotoscoped them but like instead of like giving them anime features they like gave them heavy shading over real characters and just looked uncanny it’s unfortunate because after seeing that though I’m convinced that somebody could do it yeah that’d be cool i think it’d be pretty neat yeah i I don’t know i I apologize guys i probably picked one of the most forgettable shows we’ll ever have on this podcast i’ll tell you how season two is and we’ll see where it ranks on my anime sheet if all of a sudden you like watch season 2 and you figure out it’s like the craziest coolest show in the world I I guess I’ll watch it but I’m not going to I won’t watch it you can just I heard there’s a I heard there’s a Kyoto animation show that’s this same concept but it’s better it’s like more fun has more fun with it but I don’t know probably looks as good if it’s Kyoto Animation yeah i don’t know i gave this show a six basically because it was carried by the animation yeah that’s about what I gave it to i give this show a beautifully mid a beautiful mid what else can you ask for in my mind this is below mid it’s freaking 10 in the animation department though feel like I was watching a Ghiblly movie in theaters if only a beginning after the end could get some treatment like this sounds like they need some help with the writing department too though maybe not i guess you’re not wrong though but like the adaptation to actually like following the story well that’s great but I’m going to pick my show yeah i’m glad to move on to the next one what do you got for us Zade and the show is Panty and Stalking with Garter Belt okay honestly this was on my list to pick eventually so I’m glad you picked it again panty and Stark Stalking featuring featuring Garter Belt wait so this isn’t the original then no no it is oh it is original because Garter Belt’s a character in that he’s the black priest garter Belt just look up Py and Stalking you’ll find P and Stalking it’s a comedy is it because it’s getting a season two is why you’re picking it people wanted the season two for years so now now we’re getting it so So you heard it the guy who made this was also the guy who did Cyberpunk Edge Runners keep that in the back of your mind as you watch this is it Trigger it no it was Gynax and then everybody who worked on this show and girl un log and all that one made went to form Trigger so the sequel trigger so this is a this is an older one yeah this is when Gynax was still alive still has Trigger making the new one yes okay they pretty much own the IPs for all that cuz Gynax is dead oh they own the IPs they have like Guran Lagon’s IP too and that was cool i didn’t know that the investors took Gynax in the back LA and went Yeah they did and even more recently when they went bankrupt well you heard it that’s what we’ll be doing next two weeks we’re gonna be watching Panty and Stalking it’s a comedy correct yes yeah comedy oh heavily heavily comedy inspired by Drawn Together nice oh that’s a weird show drawn Together is a freaking weird Cartoon Network thing or something no it’s Comedy Central comedy Central this is a weird one see you guys then have a good one bye have a good life buddy bye
Hey, at least it looks good…
