panty and stocking with garter belbelt is one of the most hilarious loud bombastic inventive experimental surprisingly emotional beautifully crafted totally unique and entirely anarctic anime of the past 20 years and with the long- aaited second season coming right around the corner as of this writing i figured what better time to analyze what makes it so damn great in the first place than now one of my favorite things about hiroyuki maiishi the director of panteon stocking and my favorite anime director of all time is how far he pushes the medium of anime in everything he makes as someone who has always been predisposed to art which pushes the boundaries of its medium far past that which is expected of it it’s a quality i deeply admire and i is one of the greats at it from the exquisitly awesome artouse action madness of dead leaves to the layered allegorical hype fest of kill la kill to the meta insanity of space patrol lulu to the legendary inspirational masterpiece of tangen tapag and lagon every show emishi directs has an incredibly unique and exciting approach to the medium of anime that you just don’t often see even cyberpunk edgerunners goes vastly far and beyond the call of duty expected from a netflix ad for a video game genuinely being one of the most fun and inventive sci-fi shows of the decade thus far but even amongst such a frenetic eclectic and insane catalog pion stocking stands out as possibly his most one-of-a-kind and utterly singular work to date to the point where a lot of people can’t seem to decide whether or not it’s even anime but i’m getting ahead of myself what is panten stocking well it’s right there in the names of the two main characters anarchy panton stocking’s entire ethos is being the most ballstotheed anarchctic show you could possibly conceive of and a lot of this boils down to the way in which the show was directed panty and stocking is made up of technically 13 episodes however in the style of a classic western kids cartoon the majority of episodes are broken into two individual 11-minute parts this alone is obviously pretty unique for anime but what makes it even more interesting is that nearly every episode has at least one part with a different director now don’t get me wrong i am very aware that most anime have loads of episode directors and usually the majority of episodes have their own individual directors however in the case of panty and stocking each director’s vision is so potent and unique that you can essentially consider half of it to be something of a stylistic anthology series with a few reoccurring characters maybe the most extreme example of this is episode 5 the first half of which directed by sheen itagaki is in the show’s most common style characterized by bouncy expressive chaotic and fast-paced animation that has an infectious and kinetic charm to it however the second half directed by osama kobayashi best known for beck and paradise kiss is directed with an almost satoshi kong-esque realism and some of the most uncanny and terrifying character designs i’ve ever seen in an anime inspired by sha ohhira’s episode of the hakenden sequel ova that is until py and stocking show up at the end hilariously clashing with the entire style and tone of the episode to wonderful comedic effect other relevant examples include akira ameia’s phenomenal transformers sendup in the first half of episode 7 the three uniquely bizarre parts of chuck to the future that appear in episode 10 and masahiko ozka’s highly controversial directorial choices in the first half of episode 9 that make it look sort of like an advertisement or an episode of aquatine hunger force however with all of this being said usually the show follows a format of half of the episode being some crazy experimental madness and the other half following a fairly consistent cartoony monster of the week segment however even this is done in a quite anarchctic way seeing as there’s no real consistency to which half of the episode is going to be the crazy one whether the whole episode is going to be crazy or whether the whole episode is going to be normal or whether it randomly won’t be broken up into two episodes or the two episodes are a two-part narrative or whether it’ll be broken up into five episodes pantion stocking is allergic to any sense of stability or formula which is precisely why i think it’s so odd to consider it not anime due to the western influenced half of the show either way however you want to label or categorize it pantion stocking with garter belt is still one of the most original and creative animated series to ever be put to television and i cannot wait to see how trigger continues its legacy in season 2 if you want to see more wholly original boundary pushing and mind-blowing art check out my other videos and if you like those too consider subscribing to the channel also check out my second channel and my big playlist
