   I personally can't blame loulan for doing so. her home that maomao just entered out of force is not the Palace that Maomao came to know. This is Shenmei's "world." You can just tell that Loulan saw death so many times for someone who's at a young age. This is truly what life was like back then. You can just imagine what the previous emperor's era must have been like by just looking at Shenmei's face and behavior.

   To add rough timeline for understanding:

   Around 37-40 years ago or so: Shenmei was introduced to the rear palace along with Taihou as her lady-in-waiting. Then happened the same thing as with Anshi, the current Empress Dowager: late emperor preferred young maid to the actual concubine, and the daughter was born.

   A year later: said daughter was banished along with the doctor (also, nice guess that it is the same doctor that was the previous apothecary in the stronghold – he is one). Taihou remained in the rear palace, unable to leave anymore.

   35 years ago: the current Emperor was born from Anshi, Luomen (Maomao's adoptive father and granduncle) was turned into a eunuch for this childbirth, because after that story with the blamed doctor the eunuch rule was made no exceptions for doctors.

   20-something years ago: Taihou's daughter was taken in by Shishou as a wife, Suirei (then named Shisui) was born.

   Around 20 years ago: Jinshi was born along with the other child in the rear palace and Maomao was conceived after that game of Go in Verdigris House. Late emperor went completely mad after that "attack" from Anshi and sometime before that birth Shenmei was released from the rear palace as there were no need for her to be there anymore. She returned to Shi clan and basically enslaved Taihou's daughter and Suirei for usurping her place as the wife while she was idling her life away meaninglessly in the rear palace as a decoration. Some time after that, Loulan was born (she is 19 here, one year older than Maomao).

   Half a year later: one of the children died, Luomen was banished from the rear palace.

   Around 19 years ago: Maomao was born. She is 17 in the first volume, which happened 2 years ago in the story, and this world uses the old Asian system when the age increments +1 on a New Year's day, we don't know when exactly is her birthday, just that she and Jinshi were born in different years and roughly one year apart (see the story of Lakan and Fengxian). She is about to turn 19, if these events are happening around New Year's eve.

   5 years ago: Late emperor finally died, the current Emperor became the emperor officially. Somewhere here Suirei entered the outer court as a court lady and a spy, introduced by her teacher (probably that one doctor/apothecary).

   1 year ago: Loulan/Shisui was admitted in the rear palace as a Pure Consort. Taihou died in the rear palace.

   So, here we are, if Shenmei was admitted into the rear palace in the marriageable age (15-20), then now it's 55-60 for her. Crazy old hag, indeed.

   It doesn't look like any of the gunpowder was in tightly sealed containers so no major detonations should occur since the loose powder in the jars with a cloth cover would flare up and burn rapidly setting the others on fire and sending the smoke out the windows. Any powder in tightly sealed containers (like canisters or sealed boxes) would explode. Wonder what type of poison was used.
