The First AI Anime Is Airing Right Now!
This heading isn’t a troll, the new anime Twins HinaHima that’s currently airing this season is 95% AI usage, but let’s break it down.
It’s produced by a studio called KaKa Technology Studio, which launched in 2023 and this is their first ever production credited online, so let’s look at the behind the scenes of the making of.
It looks like the anime is still drawn and animated, in the sense there’s drawn panels of characters movements and actions, but with an AI filter slapped over the top of it, doing all the colouring and rendering, now i’m not defending the use of AI, but the comments raise 2 good points on this video.
Some say it’s just another part of the creative process, it’s a tool so they’ll use it, and the other half is saying it’s due to Japan’s terrible working conditions which we all know to be true, like Jujutsu Kaisen and Mappa had a huge spotlight on for overworking staff, what do you guys think?

I don't like the idea of AI taking jobs from anyone, but if AI could give us new seasons of anime that weren't renewed, it would be awesome. Feed it source material and season one of a canceled anime and hit go.
Aight first of all lets not pretend that coloring and rendering isn’t just as important as lineart. Skipping over that and leaving it in the hands of ai severely limits what you can do with a scene’s mood, composition (deciding who or what is more present in the scene), and emotion. 2nd of all…ya’ll really think that animation studios using this are going to treat their employees better? If most of the work is done by ai, then that means there’s more of an excuse for the studios to shove down an insanely increased quantity of work for their employees in every other area, they aren’t going to see an opportunity and not take it lmao (prob decreasing pay as well lets be honest). We aren’t also skipping over the fact that there are actual people doing the coloring and rendering here, those are all jobs that people live off of. In the case that this becomes a big thing, employees will most likely either lose their jobs or still work insanely hard with probably much lower pay.
I’m not saying that this is the worst thing ever for one anime, but like let’s not pretend that this is beneficial
As an artist I just feel I should state my opinion since people are saying this is a good outcome, the problem with ai itself is that the art it makes is used by stealing other artists work, there are no current laws or regulations on ai and as of right now any pieces made with ai are stealing from many hardworking artists who have not consented to their works being used in this way. Not to mention ai as it is at the moment isn’t sustainable and is incredibly damaging to the environment, the amount of power it takes to make a single ai image let alone a whole anime is ridiculous. Ai uses hundreds of thousands of gallons of water daily to cool the servers, and is currently to harmful to be used so freely, as well as insanely costly to maintain.
Instead of using ai in such a way people should speak out for artist to let them have proper benefits and work environment, why not advocate for artists dealing with these horrible work conditions, rather than ignore and go oh well we have ai now, it’s just plainly disrespectful to many artists who have been working in the industry for years when their works are used without permission.
Artists deserve better work environments and artists also deserve their works to be protected from blatant theft, and unless ai can be used ethical way and has proper regulations in place for the work they use, plus being sustainable it’s not realistic to expect this to become the future of animation. As well as where ai is at the moment it does not provide quality work, we should put our time to supporting talented artists not having their art taken from them and fed to a machine.
Ai wifus
Studios be like: “Sorry my wittle millionaire pocket can’t pay livable wages for my animwators so i’ll use ai swop instead. Wah wah wah”.
Listen to me otakus of the world you guys are being played! This is absolutely garbage slop, badly made “smooth animation” with the most generic unoriginal plot ever.
You guys are actively supporting something that might put your favorite artists out of a job! That is stopping the future Odas, Tatsuki Fujimotos and Rumiko Takahashis of the world from finding a place in the industry!
As well as telling companies you enjoy the idea of quickly made but bad media plus underpaid overworked animators! Shame on you!
If you support this anime and the excuses they put out for its creation don’t you dare say you like anime or manga or that you enjoy any Japanese creator! Because if you’re going to be a heartless soulless AI “art” supporter at least spare yourself from being a hypocrite.
As long as it’s used to help and not to do the work, it’s good
If the quality is good and it helps get more content out there at a lower cost, why not?
AI is a tool. People who would stand in the way of AI optimized workflows gor animators and CGI artists are stupid. There is a big difference between art that is start to finish made by ai, and art that is made by a person using ai the same way a person can use a pen or a mouse and keyboard or a computer program.
This isn’t a black and white situation, this is a good in between for ai use. The ai is just doing what a fill bucket tool would be doing, making production of an anime easier. I think this is a good tool for a smaller studio, maybe a show with a really really limited budget should use. In the larger scale though, this takes away work from real human artists who could be working on a production. If a major studio that could afford to hire artists to do this, used an ai solely to make more of a profit that is horrific.
Unlike in a lot of ai discussions this is less of a law discussion and more of an ethics one. We need to have open disclosure of when an ai is being used, for what purpose, and what it was trained on. Then as an audience it’s up to us to decide if this was ethical or distasteful.
Alright I know what anime to avoid completely this season
its funny how before even clicking on this short i had a feeling this is AI
Fun fact: kaka in dutch means shit
Colour and shadow done by ai is ok i guess
As Long as AI doesn't animate scenes that are meant to be Visually and emotionally impacting (Like a fight beetween rivals) i'm alright with it
Finally! I can created anime with storyline like what l want even the quality of animation is like from early 2010's japanese animation.😊
Big nope
im going to be honest i dont think its that bad but personally i wouldnt watch something that has been made by AI because it feels wrong and it probably wont come in the same quality as other shows that are not AI.
Its probably fine for less popular mangas but imagine ai on jujutsu kaisen.. Yea no thanks
Ai just sucks :/
But i understand why they use ai but just give your employees breaks and good payment but thats just me i haven't been in their shoes so nothing that i say could be easily say as done
Thats exactly what AI should do in Art: Be a easy to use tool to get work done faster. I dont get why people are annoyed about it in this case. Its nothing more than the jump from physical drawing and digital one.
Ai is really getting so advanced that it is getting scary and this looks alright for an ai
