That is the reason he told her not to open the door bcs he didnt want to scare her again, he knew he was wrong and he shouldn't have, but I don't see people mentioning that at all
Jinshi is the single heir to the emperor at the moment because he has no sons… but he is isolated from everyone, wearing that mask, so he seems weak, so everyone sees him as unfit. Also the mask is needed because everyone knows Jinshi as the eunuch. At that garden party in season 1 he was probably going to put on the mask when he entered the celebration site.

Jinshi's mistake was to give Maomao a bezoar before explaining his situation. As soon as she have seen what's inside a pouch, she didn't hear a single word from what he said.
Maomao knows exactly how disposable a lowborn serving girl is, and she has already figured out the identity of Jinshi's parents at this point in the story. She is entirely aware how secrets of that magnitude could get her erased from existence in a heartbeat.
The key to JinMao is Jin is a pathetic babygirl and MaoMao is an unreliable narrator who lies to herself 24/7 to protect herself and thats a lechal combo

He now has siblings, 2 baby brothers. So he isn't directly in line for the throne, but he is afraid of something happening to them or even the emperor and that would make him in line for the throne (which he doesn't want)
