Yes Rin couldn't see demons because of seal and him starting to see them was first sign of it breaking. You did as well catch it right, the difference is that Rin can hear Satan's voice now( the same as he hears Kuro's voice ) thanks to having his demonic part back when he couldn't back then. I think as well that what Mephisto said was a bit of mistranslation. In both english and polish manga volumes he said "it's neither" as answer to Rin so that "both" is a bit weird here. This arc is as well unique flashback because it both sets up next arc and is from MC's perspective not only that it's Rin's arc. And yeah we are ending on epic cliffhanger. To be honest I was surprised they didn't went 8 chapters more because they would have so much better place to stop. Manga is ongoing and current arc would be next season( it has 37 chapters for now but it's made of something like two parts so they do have material ) and thanks to both mangaka's words and chapters 139/140 we know it's not that close to ending.
As people ignoring BE well all of it comes down to stupid decision of making anime from popular manga when they had less than 20 chapters. That filler ending in s1 did a lot of damage in western parts of anime fandom. After that confusion when s2 went back to manga and long waits made it worse. In the end to this day Blue Exorcist fans have to explain how to watch s1 and that the full end of it is not canon. At least manga is still the face of SQ magazine so it's doing pretty well in Japan( this month they have exhibition for 15th anniversary so yeah it's still popular ).

This episode hit me in the feels and I wasn’t ready. My friends won’t watch it cause they think it’s mid. I’ll get them to watch it one way or another
