The episode wasnt aired until way later because like the week it was to release was Columbine

I know another said this but I never got to watch this episode until I got the boxset… when this episode was originally meant to air, 2 weeks prior the columbine shooting happened and this episode was pulled and didn't air until around mid s4 I believe thankfully the episode wasn't plot heavy but there is a moment later that is more profound thanks to this episode

Great commentary yet again! You got all the episodes themes pretty spot on. Buffy's speech to Jonathon is one the moments that always stayed with me it was powerful and I think Buffy being able to save a life without being the slayer meant so much to her development, she fully realised that Buffy the person not just slayer has the power to save lives 🥰 our girl is growing up to be one hell of powerful woman

My thoughts about the shooters topic: I understand the idea that school shooters are just kids who're suffering and their family – or we as a society – have failed them, so we should have compassion for them, but honestly, IMHO if anyone makes the conscious decision to target random innocent people, that's such an evil thing to do that having compassion for that person should be the last thing on the priority list. Things much higher on the list should be having compassion with the parents of the kids who died, and giving them justice would be a great first step.
Also, I'd like to say that nobody (no matter how much they're suffering) who has an ounce of goodness in them would ever intentionally target random innocent people. If somebody does such an evil thing, that says a lot more about their character than about their suffering, IMHO.
On a related topic, here in Germany it's extremely rare for people to have guns. It's allowed, but you have to register for it and guns are not that readily available. I don't quite understand why guns are so easily available in the US. I don't think they should be. I'd argue making it harder to get a gun should be a good idea. As long as you don't take peoples' freedom away to get a gun, if they really want one (and are fit to have one), I don't see the problem with making it harder to get one.
The actor that plays johnathan is danny strong. Look him up he has done some great things in his career. He's a very talented TV and movie writer and director. He did dope sick. If you haven't watched it i highly recommend it.
It is really easy to accidentally glamourize school shootings in TV, but I think Buffy avoids most of the pitfalls, partly because it doesn't portray the shooting at all and partly because the actual mass murderer is in no way cool or sympathetic, they're hateful and delusional. The rat poison is goofy to take the power away from the act.
Jonathan is sympathetic because he is the one that needs help. He represents the vast vast vast majority of bullied and mentally struggling kids who, if they're gonna hurt anyone, hurt themselves. Lessons about empathy work with him. With the actual mass murderer however, Buffy says "I dont think this is gonna be resolved with logic" because yeah, you unfortunately can't really talk-therapy people out of mass killings or teach them to empathize with their victims.
Tyler! Beware the HD version of Buffy. There are many issues that compromise the original integrity of the show. One of them being seeing people such as you saw Oz this episode seeming to wink at someone. You were right on the money to assume Oz should not be in the shot. In future episodes of the Hd version you will even see cameras and crew! Love your reactions btw!

The episode Columbine had fans forget about. The 'next week on' teaser aired then Columbine pushed the episode back to airing only two weeks before the S4 premiere. It aired on September 21, 1999, and was supposed to air the day Columbine happened aka April 20, 1999. The five month gap had me forgetting about the teaser and my confusion over the episode Choices not matching it.
Tyler and Oz. They think the same way, but one is laconic and one pauses the episodes for long monologues on what he says.

Danny Strong, who portrays Johnathan, has had quite a successful career. He’s won Emmys for writing some incredible TV shows and movies. He was also in one of my favorites shows “Billions.” Strong is a very talented writer.
