Dungeon Meshi has easily become one of my favourite Manga/Anime series, and there’re a number reasons for this! In this video I’d like to briefly explore why it feels unique in its approach, without going too heavy into analysis of the story (maybe in a future video c:)

  1. Great video! Happy to see other people enjoying the story and world Ryoko Kui has created. I would recommend mentioning that the major spoiler section also covers material beyond the anime. I have read the manga so I'm happy to see someone talk about it, however I'm sure some anime-onlies would appreciate the extra heads up!

  2. Gotta love Dungeon Meshi video essays. *Spoilers for the manga*.

I hold Dungeon Meshi, especially the stuff that will happen in season 2, to very high regards in storytelling and character work. There are so many things in season 2 that I can't wait to see animated. I want to hear the demon's voice and see him move so badly! He was so charasmatic in the manga that he genuinely had me convinced he was good up until I could no longer defend him. I hope he gets really talented voice actors for both sub and dub.

In regards to what you said about bittersweet endings, having just finished Nier Autamata, I can't help but agree that they don't land as easily with me as more happy and conclusive ones.

  3. i recommended the anime to my dad knowing he would love it, but its been many months and he still hasnt even finished episode 5. i think its such a shame because he quit when it was still in the lighthearted episodic phase and never got to see it really develop 🙁

  4. I’m soo happy that I picked the series up again. After the first 2 episodes I stopped watching thinking it would be a boring slice of life with pretty art. But I was gravely mistaken.
I picked it up again just to watch with a family member as background noise, bc none of us weren’t rly interested but after every episode we found ourselves getting more and more immersed in the story and world building, gradually falling in love with the characters. Truly happy I gave this gem a second chance. 😀
