Exploring the Mullet Creek Tunnel | Solo Hike on the New South Wales Central Coast, Australia
A quick solo hike to the historical Mullet Creek Tunnel. Located in the Brisbane Water National Park on the New South Wales Central Coast, the tunnel (actually a culvert) was constructed between 1885 – 1889 to link Myron Brook to Mullet Creek.
Above it sits the Sydney to Newcastle trainline, passing through the nearby Woy Woy tunnel that opened in 1888 and was the longest in Australia at the time. To construct the trainline and tunnel a town of close to 800 people lived around the start of Mullet Creek. Remains of the stone quarries and “Navvies Camp” can also be found nearby.
The hike is roughly 8km return, starting on the Woy Woy Tunnel Firetrail which links to the Mullet Creek Firetrail. Other hikes of interest also starting from this location include the Mount Wondabyne track, Great North Walk and Woy Woy Waterfall Pool trail.
Although most of the hike is on Firetrails, the last 100 metres is slightly technical as you follow a small unmarked track along the ridge finishing with a small drop down to the tunnel entrance. Allow 3 – 4 hours return.
At the time of visiting, the cicada noise was extremely loud. I’ve done my best to adjust the sound profile to elevate my voice/take the “ringing” out of the background noise.

Great video, I had no idea it existed, great stonemason skills in the construction of the tunnel, fantastic story about the tunnel history. Gret work mate, thanks so much. Trevor.
Thanks for showing this awesome tunnel, it's a shame the last 500m down to the tunnel is not exactly great for those of us with some mobility issues.
I love that area such a magical place
