Accented Cinema – Episode 14
I’m a Kaiju fan since I was a kid. But I’m also the only Kaiju fan I know. But that probably won’t be the case soon, because the the New Godzilla movie is looking good.
If you have any passing interests in Kaiju movies, but don’t know where to begin, then here is senpai’s recommendation: The Gamera Trilogy.

I just find Godzilla films boring. Too much filler. Gamera films are far more enjoyable to watch.
Totally dying to watch these films. Going to marathon them all when i have a day off
7:46 When the impostor is sus
One thing that always confused me about the Gamera trilogy was the degradation in the sound quality of Gamera's roar. In Guardian of the Universe it wasn't as noticeable, but by Revenge of Iris his roar sounded so husky and faded that it genuinely put me off finishing the movie the first time I saw it. Would it have really been too much to remaster his existing sound effects, or even just record some new ones?
i accidentally read this as "gamer trilogy" and instantly clicked
The Gamera Trilogy, in my opinion, felt like the magnum opus of the kaiju genre and the Gamera franchise itself. The cinematography of the films for sure captured the tone and scale of the films.
You really are right, this is an amazing time to be a daikaiju fan. Between Hollywood and Netflix, we're getting a lot of high-quality films and shows to enjoy. The director of the Gamera series went on to direct one of (in my opinion) best Godzilla movies – GMK: All Monster Attack. Something you pointed out in your Shin Godzilla film, most Godzilla movies beyond the first one don't show on-screen human deaths, but GMK, like these Gamera movies, made it a point to show the monsters directly causing loss of life. Even the Hollywood Godzilla movies avoid depicting on-screen deaths, save for King of Monsters.
I got to see Gamera 3 at a film festival before it was officially released on home video; at the time it's English title was Gamera 3: The Incomplete Struggle. I still prefer that title to 'Revenge of Iris', but I admit to a bias. 😀
I don't really like the heisei gamera films, the plot is really hard to follow and a lot of things don't really make sence, and even though the later heisei era gamera films have good animation, the fights are really short and not really that good compared to the godzilla fights, which lasted a lot longer and were a lot better fights even though they did not have animation or anything.
damn, I didn't know there were scenes in Gamera 3 in the Philippines.
PS
the old woman bashing a monster carcass is legendary Lillia CIntapay, AKA the "aswang" icon. RIP
Man your Channel is awesome but where is essay about great fifth generation ?
I always loved the detail and work that went into the miniature sets of earlier Godzilla and Gamera films!!
I like the giant flying rocket-powered beyblade tortoise than the radiation powered giant lizard.
Yo where can i watch this trilogy it looks amazeballs
I grew up watching 'monster movies' on Saturday afternoon tv. Gamera has always been my favorite kaiju, followed by Rodan.
👏👏👏
I'm in my late 30's and I still watch Kamen Rider lol.
i just realised the godzilla vs destroyah foreground scene at 3:59 is of hong kong
After Godzilla vs Kong, we need Gamera in the Monsterverse.
I was surprised how good the movie's were back in the 90's
The first one i loved the second and 3rd not so much, 3 i liked more than 2, but gamera gurdian of the universe has great effects and good story
I know it would perhaps be off-brand…but the OTHER time Gamera smoked Godzilla was in the Box Set Department. It would be a different but very cool video essay to compare and contrast the Arrow Set with the Criterion Set. In a video essay style and not just an unboxing commentary style.
I just wanna say this as someone who has Godzilla as their favorite fictional character of all time:
There are only THREE Godzilla movies in his history that are comparable to and better than this trilogy for me.
The two that are comparable are the 1954 Gojira, and Godzilla, Mothra, and King Ghidorah: Giant Monsters All Out Attack, those two films are the only movies to be as impactful and as powerful as this trilogy Both of these movies are as tragic, dark, powerful, and iconic as these two for me.
And the only one for me that is better than this is Godzilla: King Of The Monsters (2019). For me, at least, it's that personal attachment to this film that makes it better. The characters, kaiju, world, and everything else is just as fantastic. This was the first Godzilla movie I went to see in theatres, and it's everything I could ask for in a kaiju movie.
I keep hearing about the 90s Gamers movies I want to watch them with my nephew.
Gamera movies have so much feeling that its cheese becomes endearing, tho it's a very hard to duplicate/mantain formula… I understand why its so hard to get films like that done…
I often get positive goosebumps when I think about the final scene of the first Gamera when he shoots that huge ball of fire and incinerates Gyaos.
@Accented Cinema, I am wondering what your insight is regarding the Mothra trilogy?
It helps that this was limited to a trilogy, but this is one of the few sets of kaiju type movies that started at a very high quality and got better. I rewatch Guardian of the Universe due to the score and the great awesome moments it gives Gamera.
I always liked Gamera more than Godzilla. Even the goofy original.
I know about Gamera at the same time as I know Godzilla. But I hadn't seen a single Gamera film in my childhood, just Godzilla and Mothra for Kaijuu; maybe it's a market issue? Fortunately, this essay convinced me to start watching the Gamera trilogy.
i swear to god the scenes with the Gaos are what gave me border line Agoraphobia (the fear of open spaces) any time its slightly dark i NEED to check and make sure thet fucking Satan bird is not gliding silently behind me. that scene where it snatches a dog and almost an older woman scared me shitless as a little kid and fuck the puppets for the close ups are just so nasty and evil looking.
Here after the new gamera and toho Godzilla movie announcements 🙏
godzilla vs destroyah is not bad . i would say its equal to gamera 3 and 2
It's interesting. To think that a Gamera fan and crossover film almost made into the works–the props were set, actors from the previous films were hired, and the suits already made. Only to then see their lights cut out thanks to corporate greed on Daiei and Toho's part. It's pathetic really.
Gamera films were definitely more destructive and violent too than the Godzilla films. I actually like Godzilla more but, it’s also good to have options that are not carbon copy of another series.
Seriously!? I'm not A fan of Gamera! I hate Gamera! It's worse than Godzilla! Gamera has never been better! It's one of the worst franchises ever! and that is why I love Godzilla and hate Gamera! 😠👎
I'm visiting Tokyo and I saw the third movie on TV the other night. Even without subtitles or dubbing I watched the whole thing. Excellent movie.
This video sent me down a path which ended in Gamera being my absolute favorite.
In 3:10 wait a minute can gamera just fiy? If yes why walking?
