Diebuster has grown on me a lot over time. When I first watched it I was not overly impressed with it in contrast to Gunbuster (which is my favourite anime), with the exception of the final quarter.
However I feel like it's a worthy successor to both the original anime and the narrative set up within it. I think what put me off originally is the aesthetics and the more whimsical tone, that and Nono being quite a bit of a different character from Noriko (who is a character that I strongly identified with when I first saw Gunbuster back in the mid 90s. I still do somewhat, but I have grown in self confidence and other metrics), but as I say it has all grown on me as time has gone by.
