So here it is, the final opening song for the entire Attack on Titan Anime series: “The Rumbling” from SiM! This piece gave me unique challenges on the piano because how does one arrange a metalcore music on a single piano? Sometimes, I feel like even 88 keys are not even enough.

But before I continue, I want to ask you something: Doesn’t the melody in 0:08 sound really similar to Grieg’s “In the Hall of the Mountain King” theme? And not only that, the string melodies in 0:14 also reminds me of the main melody in Dvorak’s “From the new world” symphony (the 4th movement). Really a crazy coincidence, since Eren himself wants to create a “new world” in a way…

Some key points of this arrangement:

① 0:41 “I’M TEARLESS, I’M FEARLESS”
These aggressive growling vocals found in metal music are almost impossible to replicate on the piano but I still needed these voices in order to fully replicate the original song. I think the best approach is to just create a fitting melody out of the growling vocals while keeping the rhythm. I “translated” the growling vocals into a middle voice in 0:41 for example.

② 2:04 Beethoven joins “the Rumbling”
This is something I rarely do in my arrangements: I reharmonized the entire bridge part of the original song and only kept the main melody intact. The reason is because no matter how hard I try, I couldn’t fully replicate the sheer intensity of the hardcore metal in the bridge part with all the guitar riffs and screaming. That’s why I had the idea to create an alternative chord progression in order to make the bridge part more suitable for being played on the piano. I also quoted a little bit Beethoven’s “Appassionata” Sonata No.23 in the left hand in 2:04, because I really like these wavy movements and they sound almost “apocalyptic” to me (plus, they are in the same F minor key)

③ 2:44 “If I lose it all, slip and fall”
I absolutely love the quiet melody before the final chorus in the original song but I wish the quiet moment of introspection could have lingered a little bit longer in the music. That’s why I added an additional musical buildup in 2:59 because nothing is more satisfying than playing an insane crescendo and then finally hammer the final chorus in 3:11.

All in all, this song is probably the “heaviest” arrangement I’ve done in a while and I cannot wait to see the rest of Attack on Titan Final Season! With that said, thank you for reading this week’s “Animenz Explains!” I hope I can see you in my next video again! It’s going to be an OST from Attack on Titan again.

  1. Rumbling, Rumbling, it's coming!
    Rumbling, Rumbling!
    Beware!
    Coming for you!
All I ever wanted to do was do right things
I never wanted to be the king, I swear
All I ever wanted to do was save your life
I never wanted to grab a knife, I swear
    I'm tearless, I'm fearless
    I'm burning, I'm burning
You tell me what have I missed?
Still wandering in the deep mist
If I lose it all, slip and fall
    I will never look away
If I lose it all, lose it all, lose it all
If I lose it all outside the wall
    Live to die another day
    I don't want anything, I'm just here to…
    Beware!
All I ever wanted to do was know what's out there?
I refused to lose without a fight, oh, oh-yeah
    Oh-oh, ooh-oh-oh
We're just too young, ignorant and innocent
Like kids stay up all night in a tent, oh yeah
How do you see me? Oh yeah
Am I who I used to be?
    Beware!
Nobody knows what's inside of me
Nobody knows what's inside of me
Nobody knows what's inside of me
    Ah
If I lose it all, slip and fall
    Will you laugh at me?
If I lose it all, lose it all
    Ah-ah-ah, ah-ah
If I lose it all, slip and fall
    I will never look away
If I lose it all, lose it all, lose it all
If I lose it all outside the wall
    Live to die another day
    I don't want anything, I'm just here to…
    Beware!
    Rumbling, Rumbling, it's coming!
    Rumbling, Rumbling!
    Coming for you!
    Rumbling, Rumbling, it's coming!
    Rumbling, Rumbling!

  2. Woah, I didn't know that there was a 10th titan form! The one that gives crazy unmatched piano abilities.

  3. God.. Animez is incredibly cool. A whole piano keyboard is not enough to reveal his talent, just a genius.

  4. Tbh for the first time I listen to this song,it is not that good but somehow it keep stucking in my head untill I listen second time 💀💀💀💀 (the curse is activate)

  5. ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😮😮😮😮😮😮😮😮😮😮😮😮❤❤❤❤❤

  6. I started learning this areangement about a month and a half ago. I was stuck between this and "Noble Pope" but felt Rumbling was a more manageable task.

I got to about 01:36 but I'm thinking I might quit tbh. Progress was faster than I expected and I could play each part pretty well for a while but it feels like after a week or two I just lose it and start being sloppy. Maybe I just don't feel the motivation to keep trying :/

It's super hard and I just feel like I can't get the sound Animenz does. I don't know how to improve my expression. I might update this comment if I eventually keep learning but :/ Maybe I'm not ready for it. I feel like I could learn the physical movements but it would be sloppy on uninteresting, like pieces I learned 2 or 3 years ago that were too difficult for me at the time.

Edit (2 weeks later): nah fuck that I'm gonna keep going.

  7. This hits way harder on piano, and this is coming from a huge, HUGE metal fan. It sounds so much more desperate and strained.
