Had he lived to see the end of the war, he would have seen the Soviet Union sweep into Germany, Berlin razed to the ground, Germany divided into two puppet states, and the dissolution of Prussia. To a man like him, it would have been utterly unbearable.
Brilliant performance by the great Christopher Plummer. I have to watch this movie. That said however; I would have had no sympathy for Bill. He was a lousy leader. I read that he never visited the battlefields and never saw any of the wounded. He never went to any of the hospitals. His exile was not a fitting punishment and his responsibility for WWI was huge.
Why is everyone saying that the Kaiser did such a good job he's the one who started World War 1 by giving Austria-Hungary the blank check if he didn't give that piece of paper Austria-Hungary wouldn't have the balls to mess with Russia and they would have talked it out diplomatically rather than start World War 1 don't feel bad for the idiot who started World War 1 and killed millions of people and the thing I love the most about him is that he's claiming that will of his generals betrayed him after he betrayed Bismarck The Men Who literally made the country he's ruling he fired him after they had a disagreement if that's not betrayal I don't know what is

A good peacetime leader dragged into a war by trying to seem strong only to find that he was not ready for it. This is the tragedy, because only after the war did he realise were his strengths were, but alas it was too late.

Had a crippled limb from birth that he was relentlessly reminded of by his own family.
Lost his father at a young age.
Had a troubled relationship with his mother his whole life.
Made awful political decisions that while definitely his own fault; could definitely be understood from the perspective of a man of his upbringing.
Led his country into an awful waste of a war.
Lost his throne, his people, his army and lived just long enough to see his home twisted into a fascist nightmare.
