「マダガスカルのカヌー」内容
アフリカ大陸の東400キロに浮かぶマダガスカル島。そこに住む人々の先祖はインド洋各地から移住してきた。 6,000キロも離れた東南アジアの島から渡ってきた人もいる。言葉も、太平洋から東南アジアにかけて分布するオーストロネシア語族に属す。 インド洋、アラビア、東南アジア、太平洋各地の影響を強く受けているマダガスカルのカヌー。 7世紀頃、東南アジアから移住した時に由来するといわれるオーストロネシア（太平洋・東南アジア）的要素は、カヌーのどの部分に残っているのか？ インド洋から太平洋まで様々なカヌーの写真とともに、カヌーとは何か、マダガスカル・カヌーの特徴とは何かを探り、時空を超えた文化の交流とその痕跡を求める。

Canoes in Madagascar
( Narration in Japanese only)
It is known that people migrated to Madagascar from the islands of Southeast Asia in the 7th to 14th centuries, but nothing is known of what kinds of boats or canoes people used to cross the Indian Ocean. However, a close examination of “laka”, the canoes used today along the west coast of Madagascar, reveals the existence of structural traits found in Austronesian canoes. The aim of this film is to identify the Austronesian traits in canoes of Madagascar, by reference to the types of East African coast. Canoes are complex tree-dimensional moving structures, making them ideally suited to exposition in a visual medium. Computer graphics and 3D computer graphics elements are added to conventional footage to help describe the form and function of the canoes.

Taking advantage of the possibilities of visual representations, computer graphics and 3D imagery are superimposed onto normal film footage to effectively and clearly convey the forms and functions of the various types of canoes. A good example of a media-mix ethnographic film, also featuring a clear, easy to comprehend structure aimed at inspective comparisons.
