What I get bemused at is people trying to say that oh, Rika did nothing wrong it was all Satoko’s fault, and vice versa. Like… both of them screwed up, both of them knew they screwed up, and both of them are at fault. But more on that in a bit. I also don’t get people who say “Oh, well Satoko should just learn to study lol, so childish”. Like b r u h she spent hundreds of timelines trying to figure out studying; she spent a hell of a lot longer than you did studying – and if she can’t study after that, then understandable; and that’s not even including the fact that when she fell behind on studies and pulled a prank, she was left in a dark room and fed nothing but bread and soup for at least a week*. But that’s water under the bridge – Satoko also has functional disabilities (stemming from being colourblind (I believe?) and from her abusive childhood) along with behavioural disabilities (again, her childhood – unlike Rika, she never had a chance to grow up at all, her life was shit from the start). But, again, this is a Freudian excuse – and that’s the point. The whole thing, all the hundreds if not thousands of timelines (particularly if you put both together), is because of childishness. You’ve seen 3.0+1.0 by now, right? Evangelion? We see the same thing in both – childish fighting, bickering, tearing everything down to dust and ash, but in the end for even a slight resolution, you can’t just fight it out – you have to talk it out. And that’s the beauty of this: this ending *isn’t happy for either of the two Loopers. Satoko doesn’t get her teenage holiday, and Rika doesn’t get her study partner. For a series like this, I say this was perfectly bittersweet. It’s not a bad End, but it certainly isn’t a happy one.
I, for one, am on team Satoko here. I get Rika’s situation – over a hundred years of agony, all for your one dream to go astray – but Satoko… Rika not only had her timelines to work through, but was also born with natural talent and genius. Satoko had none of that; and, after her best friend swore to stay with her, she worked her ass off and scraped the entrance exam grade. Only for her best friend to bugger off and play fancy aristocrat on her. “She tried to help” my arse; Satoko wouldn’t want pity, she wants her friend back. She doesn’t want a tutor – she wants her sister in arms. And, to top it all off, Satoko takes in all of Rika’s experience – over a hundred years worth – and proceeds to go further*, with the implication that every finger snap is another death, another timeline; meaning Satoko experiences at least double Rika’s suffering. There remains the fact that Rika, coming off the high of victory, turned to selfishness instead of thankfulness. After all – she couldn’t have saved the town without her friends. And, finally, there’s the pure human element – Satoko, coming from a background of abuse with little to no friendship, is attached at the hip to Rika. Even without any knowledge of Rika’s suffering, for Rika to just abandon her like that, to turn away and break her most important promise – to stay with her forever – just for a happy go lucky classy school life, is unforgivable. Rika didn’t even *try to understand Satoko’s situation; she was unwilling to compromise (say, by choosing a high school closer to home? Or by, y’know, inviting Satoko immiediately to her group?), and her pride, her post-victory hubris, would become her downfall.
Tl;dr – Higurashi’s ending matches it’s story; spectacular violence with a bittersweet setting and flawed but human characters, twisted and turned by the cruel, sick hand of fate. To quote the famous philosopher and teacher Keanu Reeves, “be excellent to each other”. Don’t ignore your friends, don’t break your promises, and make conversation and ask for amends *before*, you know, descending into the pit of despair for a hundred-year romp of madness and terror.
I guess with a anime literally about time loops, murder, and torture- stuff like this is to be expected… but I am still a bit weirded out by how there are comments by people talking about how their relationship is like “yea they actually love eachother isnt it so romantic!” and im here like… um. Kind of weird, but ok. 😐 Like ok homegirl has a hard time studying and is abused at home, and that sucks but that doesn’t entitle her to Rika’s life. Kind of fucked up how Satoko convinces Rika that she is the one that “cares about her the most” and is “the only one who cares about her”. I will never ever understand why people in fandoms romantcisize relationships like this. I do find the concept interesting, having two looping people who hurt eachother- but I much rather people were upfront about how fucked up it is. Like, these bitches gotta cut ties or something like fr… get over it yall. Let Rika have her own life damn.. HHCBHBDHBD
“uh um yea satoko like disemboweled and killed Rika multiple times but golly, its out of love! how could you not see the romance?” barfs my whole fucking spleen out LMAOOO ASDFGHHHJKJ,
Am I the only one who didn't felt this ending was happy at all? Just see this ending through another lenses: Satoko went through the entirety of Gou and Sotsu with one thing in mind, managing to ace St. Lucia’s tests in order of not undermining Rika's dreams, and when this did not work, trap Rika in Hinamizawa. The first thousands of years were spent in studying (R: "How many years did I make you study for that exam?" S: "Think of the biggest number you can, then multiply it by three) but she could not achieve anything; then she took a drastic measure, make Rika forget all about St. Lucia. At first, by a gentle conduction and persuasion, but when this also doesn't work, Satoko opts for a far more drastic measure that is to break Rika’s will. Make her want to stay in Hinamizawa. And so on she spent so much time doing this. She went through all of Rika’s original fragments (Rika is 100+ by the end of the original anime) & when you add this to Satoko’s own looping you get quite the lengthy number. 100+ fragments spent studying. Then quite the number of fragments spent trying to gently change Rika's mind, +100 fragments trying to force Rika to stay by doing terrible things to her, orchestrating major schemes against her friends and Rika herself, some more whole fragments resolving around learning things that would help onto her task (how to use firearm accurately and etcetera) and then the +100 fragments Rika went through. Only so in the end, nothing of what she wants is achieved and all she does is for absolutely nothing especially considering she only managed to put a bigger strain around their friendship and further drive them apart. Does that seem like a satisfying end for Satoko? I will never understand people that cry about Satoko getting away when absolutely nothing of what she wants happens in the end and she only worsens her distance with Rika. That's not getting away scot-free, you guys! Just my two cents. Though I'm thrilled by Witch Satoko (Lambda) leaving to kakera and going after Witch Rika (Bernkastel). I also like that this Hojō Satoko is allowed a somewhat happy ending, even though she somewhat must still have all her memories and feel cold from time to time. Sucks to be either of you, eh, Satoko and Rika? Also, there's no kiss. Worst ending EVER! >:'(
t.l.d.r: Satoko spends +1.000 years of her life doing inexplicably terrible things to everyone and even herself only to not achieve a single thing in the end. in fact she only makes things worse. sucks to be post-sotsu satoko? i can't believe i'm sympathizing with such a colossal ho. the ultimate toxic gf, our problematic QUEEN. love her sm!!;;
I'm happy for Rika, though I'm sure this isn't her definitive happy ending. Even after all this absolute toad crap, she will miss Satoko and feel sad she isn't there, she wanted to go to St. Lucia with Satoko. Not without her. 🙁
I am confused… (as I have watched only a few parts of this series) that is this the Satoko we have known has returned or a looper persona moving on with her life??
Satoko saying she's the one who cared the most for rika and saying she's happiest in hinamizawa sounds like satoko is try to manipulate/gaslighting rika into staying in hinamizawa with her
I still cannot believe how I was able to take this show seriously, until the whole "Rika, I fucking hate this school, the people here are completely foreign to me, and I'm only here because I want to spend time with you but you're ditching me for these strangers" thing – which was genuinely heartbreaking – turned into "I HATE STUDYING I HATE STUDYING *makes spaghetti out of your windpipe*"
Now that another higurashi season ended and have to wait and see if their gonna do another one for those who can't get the Manga version of it for some reason. It is safe to say that sotsu is a very bad season for higurashi and I'm pretty sure I spack to a good number of fans that it is a dumpster fire when it comes to all the noticeable con's it has & I'm also sure sotsu also made fans hate satoko even more because of her actions, yes both her and Rika share an even level of blame when it comes to everything was in st. Luica and all that, but satoko was the one that basically tortured and killed both Rika and all their closest friends and used everyone because she couldn't face reality and facts, and Rika shouldn't have forgot with how th sotsu ended. And as a long-time fan of higurashi, I'm very depressed in how they handled sotsu, I loved higurashi because of how they showed community bonds and unity, though friends. I didn't see any of that! All I show was satoko being a very terrible friend & shoing a very toxic relationship going on. All I could say if, and when they make another season, let's hope they don't do the same thing as they did here. And actually, focus on doing the stuff that people loved about higurashi
it's a happy ending and it's wonderful, this anime was so amazing all these years ! But I've been waiting since 2007 for Satoshi to wake up and they don't even show the reunion scene between him and Satoko? I am a joke to you ?
