To clarify things, the hollow that possessed ichigo was the spirit of his zanpakuto and his hollow energy that resides in his inner world, known as white ichigo, the real zangetsu. With regard to Old man zangetsu,who pretends to be his zanpakuto spirit was subjected to a trance by a zanpakuto spirit who aims to revive his master, a former shinigami who once attempted to take over Soul Society and that was blinded by his wrath and power but failed. Thus, Oldman zangetsu and other Zanpakuto spirits were subconsciously assaulting Ichigo and the captains of gotei 13.
