PSIFF (2013) – The Suicide Shop – Animated Comedy HD

Check out the Palm Springs International Film Festival Playlist: http://goo.gl/DvZy5

In this merrily morbid animated musical from Patrice Leconte (Girl on the Bridge, Ridicule), a family in the assisted suicide business is faced with a dreadful dilemma: their son and heir is incurably cheerful, optimistic and life-loving.

Times are tough in the dark, rainy city that forms the setting for this Tim Burton-esque black comedy – which means business is booming for the Tuvanche family. Here in their Suicide Shop, folks at the end of their rope can take their pick of inventive ways to shuffle off this mortal coil, with the all-too-eager help of Madame and Monsieur Tuvanche providing the means.

All goes well until Madame Tuvanche gets a surprise bundle of joy — literally: a new baby boy who is relentlessly cheery. Will the family business be jeopardized by this happy (shudder!) new arrival? Delightfully misanthropic, and with a musical songbook that will have you whistling past the graveyard, this seriously strange new comedy from French master Leconte makes for a truly singular viewing experience.
