A multi-media project created by Aniplex, Yūhodō, Liden Films, Homura Kawamoto, and Hikaru Muno, Build Divide is a card game, an anime, and a confusing mess. But it might be really fun! I might even try if it ever comes to the US.

Build Divide: Code Black is a promotional anime to hype the card game, and it makes some odd design choices. It’s a fairly standard show, albeit quick and short. Hard to recommend it to anyone except diehard fans of card games.

Season 2 (Code White) will come out in April 2022.

  1. Yeah, of course power means nothing when a unit attacks a player directly, because units has something called "Hit" (comparable to "Critical" in Vanguard).
    The trigger system in BD is perhaps a bit odd, but kinda interesting. And the fact that you can only lose when you're out of cards in your life zone is pretty interesting too (you don't lose from deck-out, but instead draw from you life zone once your deck is empty)

    And the anime is pretty good overall, especially with Code White. Code Black might seem a bit all over the place, because they're kinda just going around gathering key chips (with some other things happening of course), but it builds up towards the last few episodes of the 1st cour that way and sets up for the 2nd.

  2. Typical Card Game Anime

    Alice: I have Crazy Homeless Man attack you directly!

    Bob: Ha! In my hand, I have Meat Shield, which has the ability “Quick Summon”! This allows me to summon it on my opponent's turn. Now, I can use Meat Shield to block your attack!

    Alice: Darn you!

  3. funny cuz i understood every single part of the game xD lol.
    jokes aside. i think you missed some philisofical part of the characters. but i must agree on the characters disigns they are kinda questionable.
    also i think code black was just a rushed piece for code white. lol
    sorry if i am rude lol

  4. To caltify, the game has a vanguard style damage check system, you reveal cards from your life each time you take damage yes, and some cards make you take extra damage, (also yes) but the trade off is those cards are a LOT stronger with its stats compared to normal units, and other triggers give positive effects.

    Shot=positive
    Buster=negative

    Sorry that the anime failed to explain that part of the game, I genuinely hope it hasn't ruined the idea of the card game itself, cause it's well put together unlike the anime it's supposed to represent

    I'd even send a link to a video explaining how to play the game, but YouTube will delete this comment…

  5. Horribly designed game, Horrible anime.
    Tbh this whole franchise screams "We have no idea what we are doing."

  6. I watched the first few episodes of this anime. It made the card game look like a simplified version of "Duel Master", which was a, by design, simplified version of "Magic: The Gathering". From what I heard, that isn't true about the actual game but the show sucked at showing / explaining the game.

    Also, I feel like Naomitsu Enjō (the guy with the red deck) should have been the main character. He's more charismatic than the leads. Also, Nao wants to overthrow the oppressive system that the other leads don't care about (while Teruhito actively revels in ruining people's lives).

  7. This was an awesome anime. The soundtrack was amazing as well.
