Finally Lettuce x Ryou after talk 💚💛💛💚💚💚💛💚💛💛💚💚💛💛💛
2022年の時空ということにビックリ。
This episode was really good and I'm gonna analyse it a bit. So there will be spoil. (Sorry for the English, I'm not a native speaker)
First of all, this is the best episode so far in the season 2. For once we didn't have the repetition of : parasite, transform, fight, win. It was a genuine episode about a character who was really put on the side chair for so long.
Plus, this was the first time we had Zakuro interact with her in such sweet way. And we finally had new characters ! New Aliens, new information about the mew Aqua, the origins of what happened (not much though) ! It was refreshening !
About Ryou/Lettuce now. I know many people who ship them must be really disappointed or sad, but I don't think you should feel that way about the ship, because this was sadly not a canon ship to begin with. Mia Ikumi never suggested it, and even the OG anime never made it this far. So somehow the conclusion didn't come as a surprise.
I know many people speculated about the fact that Ryou may give her an answer later, because right now he is focused on the Mew project. But I don't believe in that, because the emotion she felt from the rejection was too strong. Lettuce is the most human character in TMM, the most normal one even. She is the character whom many girls can identify too.
And what happened to her showed that this is a normal thing that can happen, this is part of her growth as a character and as herself. Let's remind you that she has no confidence in herself at the beginning of the show. So the fact that she woke up with the desire to dress up and put earrings, wasn't for Ryou, but for herself, to feel pretty and confident. Tokyo Mewmew is not only a love story about two people liking each other romantically, this is also about self-love, self-appreciation, friendship, and family love.
This is why she said in the end " I won't turn into foam and disappear ". She had gained so much confidence, that she won't regret saying she loved him and despite the rejection, she will still walk her own path and keep her heads up.
The thing with not having Ryou liking her back the same way, is better because it would feel like Lettuce has a "Stockholm syndrome". Let's remind you that Ryou is responsable for what he has done to the 5 girls, he literally turned their life upside down, made them bioweapons, somehow forced them to fight a fight they never asked for ; so when Ryou said he was " happy that she feels like this about him ", I think it meant he was happy she doesn't hate him for what he has done to them, since it is a selfish project.
And the fact he can't love her the same way, it's his way to let her live her own life normally (at least) without having the mew mew Business interfering in every corner of her life (love, family, friends).
Her cries, at the last minutes of the episode, signed (most probably) the end of that love, because let's be realistic, crying from sadness because of a rejection doesn''t make you want to go back to this person, but it makes you move on. And if he ever comes back and say 'I love you' to her in another season, it would feel kinda bitter (well if it happens it happens, I'll be happy with it to be fair).
Somehow it's better, because it could give an opportunity to have Lettuce be in love again with a side character but this time, make this side character fall in love with her instead. This is a good chance to introduce new characters and develop her further ! Like in the OG anime ! There were so many side characters, so many ideas !
We already have Ichigo/Masaya (which their love was determined mostly by their fate), Kisshu who's in love with her too, and an innocent blooming (love) relationship between Tart and Pudding.
Let's not try to ship everyone with everyone and force it to be canon, there are only 11 protagonists. If everyone end up with everyone, it would be like putting them in a box, shake it, and when we open it, everyone is paired… it won't help the characters explore their life, and their objectives. It doesn't work for their independency either. They would be closed in a box where only the MewMew thing exist, and not have a life of their own anymore.
The OG anime explored so many things. Keiichiro had a fiancé, Lettuce fell in love, Minto had a rival (which their relationship was ambiguous), Zakuro lost (or got separated from) a man she really cared for (I'm not gonna talk about Pudding's fiancé, this one was… strange).
There are so many things to do with the characters !! Lettuce could meet someone again who's gonna love her first (for a change) or become more independent on her own ; Minto could develop a less boring relationship with her brother, and we could learn more about her love for the classical dance, we could even reintroduce her rival from the OG anime ; and Zakuro is the best one they could explore.
With the new anime Oshi no ko, this is giving them a new possibility to develop Zakuro. There are so many things to do with her since she is a star, a singer, famous, attractive, intelligent, and great at combat.
Plus this is the only character so far that had given advises about love. She cared for Ichigo's romance in the OG anime, and came with a plan for her date in the new, and is the only one to notice Ichigo's worries for Masaya, or is amused by her infatuation with him. The same with Lettuce.
It may be a theory, but I do feel like Zakuro may have been in love with someone or is infatuated with someone. But the first one is more likely since her songs had proven that she wanted to be stronger alone, and doesn't need anyone. This is a chance for TMM to give her a better story.
And since they want to do multiple seasons, this is the occasion to introduce new characters like they did in the last episode, and not crush all the characters together (because the OG anime had done a good job already, but I want the remake to do better than the OG). Like Fruit Basket did, there were so many new characters, new story, new romance, they didn't patch all the Sohma with each other.
