Secret Garden – “Once in a Red Moon”
Music by Rolf Lovland
Arranged by me

“Once in a Red Moon” is the title track of the album that the Josh Groban-popularized “You Raise Me Up” first appeared on. Much of the piece is written like a nocturne. On the recording, the instrumentation (e.g., Spanish guitar and Bolero-like percussion) gives “Once in a Red Moon” an interesting Spanish flavor. I couldn’t really add that Spanish quality in my piano solo arrangement, but unlike my “Song from a Secret Garden” arrangement, I played most of the trills and I even added a few notes.

I use the score from the Secret Garden Collection book (ISBN: 0757937063). The big challenge is to play the violin line of the score (originally clarinet and strings) with the treble and bass clefs of the piano together as a piano solo. For this piece it’s actually possible to play all the notes with just two hands, but the left hand has to jump around quite a bit in a few areas.

If you like this video, check out my previous piano solos of Secret Garden’s “Heartstrings” and “Song from a Secret Garden.” The next Secret Garden piano solo arrangements I plan to upload are “Reflection,” “Adagio,” and “Nocturne.” After that, I plan to take a break from Secret Garden and post some of my piano solo arrangements of other contemporary composers’ music. There are some other Secret Garden pieces that I adore (such as “The Promise,” “Papillon” and “Hymn to Hope”), and I’ll probably post those pieces sometime in 2010.

Thanks for watching!
