versus backstory is a reference to the movie "Holes" . the exact same thing with the shoes happened to the main character in that movie.
Underworld's power is pretty much clear if you look again on the episode~
Essentially it "Unearths the Past" so when he digs or is by a hole he somewhat dug, he can manifest that past into reality.
He dug and got a disc from a "Past" Father Pucci~

Versus definitely has evil ambitions like his old man, Dio. Seeing him betray Pucci was unexpected, especially since the priest help Versus realize his gifts he'd inherited from his father. Definitely a good villain.
