The trashiest harem anime of 2022, Love Flops (AKA Renai Flops), just pulled something CRAZY! I’m not saying you need to watch it (I don’t think I’d even suggest it to most people) but *I* do need to talk about it.

  1. The thing is, Punchline did this, too. Started out as a super trashy anime with a ridiculous premise: If the protagonist sees panties, the world ends. And then about halfway through it reveals that this is actually a time travel/sci-fi thriller and the clues have been there the whole time. At the time, I said the writing was absolutely brilliant, but it's really hard to sell someone on such a ridiculous premise that persists for half the anime.

I give kudos to any anime willing to change genres halfway through and risking losing the audience that came her for the premise. Lol.

Love Flops, at the very least was so absurdly over the top and unwilling to commit to a single genre that I kinda figured either something else was going on, or this is one of those animes that just keeps getting more and more absurd for no reason.

The twist didn't come out of nowhere, there were clues everywhere. Even the transitions would glitch out sometimes. But man, when the reveal happens and we get that super creepy, glitched out ending, it really did feel like DDLC, lol. Especially with Aoi going all Monica on us.

Then we spend about half an episode trying to convince protag-kun that the simulation wasn't real. Then the anime just gets really sad when he basically has to go through losing Ai all over again. I never expect my trashy harem animes to make me feel things, but damn, this one hurt.

At first, I was really sad to find out Love Flops was anime original because the first episode just left me wanting more, but getting to follow it on a week to week basis has been so rewarding, letting the story play out at its own pace rather than finding a source material and binging through it like I normally would.

  2. So… It essentially turned from Girls Bravo to Doki Doki Literature Club… Well played!

  3. I'm genuinely interested to see where the show decides to wrap. That "scratching at the back of your mind" sensation about the inconsistencies was right on the money. I'm also now going to go back and re-watch the series to find the titular clip that got me watching (a kung fu fight with sex toys and lube) that I somehow managed to completely skip and not realize it because of how the show is written: like a trashy nonsense harem anime with no continuity.

  4. This reminds me a bit of Invaders of the Rokujouma, but IMO Rokujouma does it better

  5. I would like to ask without spoiling myself, is it worth watching the episodes to find out whatever the big twist is?

  6. i might've been convinced to get myself a HiDive sub, just to behold this beautiful clusterfuck myself. thank you Geoff.

  7. As there exists a specifically uncensored version available for viewing… and because the subbing is absolute garbage… I would argue that Futoku no Guild is trashier trash than Love Flops.

  8. Renai Flops feels like a more child-friendly version of the Euphoria visual novel.

  9. 0:37 I've chosen quite the frame to pause on while I look for the main channel in my sub feed that id annoyingly no longer in alphabetical order with recent uploads I haven't viewed placed ahead….
0:39 I have return!- oh my

  10. I've just realized while scrolling back that:
1 the winter list is at the start of the year
And 2, Worlds end Harme was this year 🤣 oh how time feels slow as heck but also quick… it's weird

  11. The problem is that they took too long to get to the twist. The harem genre is a perody of its self at this point. Anything that seem off will just be written off as typical harem shit. Most harem animes out there already feel like a self indulging simulation. Who's gana sit through 7 episodes of harem crap unless they already like harem animes to begin with. The twist should coma by episodes 3.

  12. That's kind of amazing.
I am morbidly curious to see where they're going to go from here, but probably not enough to actually watch it.

  13. Fuck. Ok. I'll hunt this down and watch it. Fighting the terminator with a vibrator makes me feel like this might be the successor to KissxSis and Golden Boy that I have been waiting for..

  14. So the part I'm confused about after watching your video: Is this the season/series finale, or is there still more to come? You made it sound like there's definitely more episodes but this sounds like a twist that could plausibly be the last episode of a season/series.

  15. Something that might interest you to know Geoff is there's a manga being released simultaneously, and it has some surprising differences! You mentioned that this anime often cuts around the titillating aspects and well, the manga does *not*. I don't think there's any Full Front Nudity awaiting but it's definitely far less liberal with the censorship.

Now, you might think to yourself 'gee golly I really hope the weird dog thing isn't somehow less censored', and, it . . . is and isn't? It pingpongs away from what you'd logically expect in a really odd way that's still bad just not the bad you were expecting.

It's an interesting comparison point with the anime, I'm saying, albeit the english translations are woefully behind.

  16. When he said DDLC my PTSD came back, all those repressed memories, especially of that last song during the credits. I am gonna go cry now.
