Lyrics
Speed bonnie boat like a bird on the wing
Onward the sailors cry
Carry the lad that’s born to be king
Over the sea to Skye

Loud the wind howls
Loud the waves roar
Thunderclaps rend the air
Baffled our foes
Stand by the shore
Follow they will not dare

Speed bonnie boat like a bird on the wing
Onward the sailors cry
Carry the lad that’s born to be king
Over the sea to Skye

Many’s the lad fought on that day
Well the claymore did wield
When the night came
Silently lain
Dead on Culloden field

Speed bonnie boat like a bird on the wing
Onward the sailors cry
Carry the lad that’s born to be king
Over the sea to Skye

Though the waves heave
Soft will ye sleep
Ocean’s a royal bed
Rocked in the deep
Flora will keep
Watch by your weary head

Speed bonnie boat like a bird on the wing
Onward the sailors cry.
Carry the lad that’s born to be king
Over the sea to Skye

  1. I am just wondering is outlander a true story?its an oustanding series..it touches deep down may soul..

  2. I'm not Scottish either but this song make me beat a heart. Bonnie Prince Charlie it was a sad story. For he was trying to bring Scotland back to her people.

  3. This song was written by Sir Harald Boulton. Ella sings the actual lyrics of the song. It has been sung by many folks with different versions of lyrics, most notably in the movie Outlander. The battle at Culloden, which I have actually visited, makes us all wonder and of course was the inspiration for this song. I cannot understand to this day the mind set of the Scotts. 5000 men, and maybe women too I guess, going up against 15 thousand English troops who had cannons that demolished the frontal assault of the Scots. From the books I have read the battle lasted less than 30 min. Some accounts say almost 15 min. It is like Pickets charge at Gettysburg. OMG the brutality of it all.

  4. Sing me a song of a lass that is gone
Say, could that lass be I?
Merry of soul, she sailed on a day
    Over the sea to Skye
Billow and breeze, islands and seas
Mountains of rain and sun (mountains of rain and sun)
All that was good, all that was fair
All that was me is gone
Sing me a song of a lass that is gone
Say, could that lass be I?
Merry of soul, she sailed on a day
    Over the sea to Skye
Sing me a song of a lass that is gone
Say, could that lass be I?
