    There are so many songs I used to love as a kid that just make me sad now. My mom listened to this song all the time when I was little. That was back before I noticed her abuse of my dad and before that turned onto me.
    I still love this song and the others she played but it just makes me sad to think of that association being made between this song and the terrible events of my childhood.

    For many years this song made me sad, then I had my first love…It transformed into a happy song for me. Imagine listening to a song you thought to be sad, and now suddenly it brings you happiness? That realization hit me hard. I am a lover at my core, still figuring out how to express it but I'm really close to finally figuring it out. My first love didn't last, it ended really badly actually. True love is harder to sully than a diamond. Never once did I feel any anger or jealousy afterwards, I continued to admire from a distance, wish good things, and be thankful for the good times. Love might not always last but that doesn't take away from its validity. Live in the moment without fear, but make smart decisions lol. Time also does heal, living in the moment doesn't mean cramming everything into it, some things can wait. I will always have an only exception.

    My parents split during my formative teenage years. I handled it well (or so I thought) because I didn’t cry or act out anything. But I adopted a mindset of “love always ends in pain, whether it’s death or divorce.” This mindset definitely ended every intimate relationship I had over the next 10 years because I couldn’t fully commit to anyone thinking it was just going to end in pain. That was my self fulfilling prophecy. Now for the happy part! I reconnected with my high school sweetheart 5 years ago, i realized how special she was and I didn’t want to lose her like the other relationships I had. She truly was the only exception to my outlook on love and marriage. We just got married last year, I asked her if we could play this song at our wedding, but later we both decided if my parents listened to the lyrics it would make everything really awkward.

    I know that this song is supposed to be about romantic love and finding a partner but I’ve always interpreted this song as someone who’s sworn off love of every form and refuses to get too close to anyone. Then somehow she finds love in an animal or child. Finding out that there is different forms of love out there and that romance isn’t the only form of love.
