  1. Compared to the manga and original anime, this moment is given greater weight:

Lum's looking at the couple ahead of them holding hands, and you see her wondering if her bond with her Darling is all in her head. Meanwhile, though he's trying to shut it out, he can't deny he owes Lum, this time. He looks over, probably to grudgingly admit as much…

And then he sees Lum properly, for the first time since she invaded his life.

For once, she isn't zapping him or getting (according to him) pushy. He's able to realize that Lum really IS beautiful. When she starts to take off, his expression suggests he realizes, deep down, that it's now or never.

Then Ataru reaches out, and takes Lum's hand. Hesitantly, he suggests that they keep walking together for a bit. Lum's smile is subtle, but you see that she gets the change in her Darling's attitude. His own blush suggests that he's still grappling with this new development.

And just like that, the whole dynamic of the series changes.

  2. I used to really feel that Ataru doesn't deserve Lum when I was really young. I, now, kind of want to see how the story will play out or shifted to suit that narration. May be, not changing it would be the best, though.

  3. Lum is almost perfect waifu. Only if she didn't electrocute Ataru on earlier episode then she might not have any problem having relationship with him.

  4. This is the game-changing moment of the entire story of Urusei Yatsura. The one that helped to define Lum as a beloved character for several generations of readers and viewers.
It is interesting to compare the three versions of the story, the manga (the original one), the old anime (the most widely known) and the current one.
In the chapter 27 (or 26, depending on the editions) of the manga, after being scolded by her about what it would be happened without her intervention, Ataru tells Lum he is not happy to be in debt with her again (he already owes one to her). He then suddenly realize that Lum is really cute, but Lum, likely annoyed by his words, takes off and says she is going to leave. Ataru is taken by surprise. He suddenly makes a silly face and grabs her hand, asking her to wait. She is stupefied, but he, still sporting a silly face, asks her to walk a little longer together. She accepts and the two have a walk still holding their hands together, with the sunset at their back. There is not much emphasis on the gesture, beyond being a clear sign of affection by Ataru (some say love, but that's too much at this stage of the story). It is a starting point, though, that made many starting to ship Ataru x Lum, particularly thanks to Lum's kindness.

Episode 10 of the old anime starts with a different premise (it is Christmas time and the entire story comes from an attempt to bring Ataru to discredit in the eyes of Lum) to come to a very similar outcome. There, Ataru murmurs to himself he is not happy about being in debt with Lum again, but she's distracted and does not listen to what he is saying. Ataru stares at her and realizes she is really cute, but he suddenly toss the head on the other side when she approaches him to give him her Christmas present: A scarf she knitted by herself. Snow starts to fall, causing both to smile (Stille Nacht starts to play in the background). Lum then takes off to go home before Ataru and warm his room for him. Ataru is taken by surprise but rapidly reacts and takes her hand, asking her to wait. She is taken by surprise and ask him why. He then asks her to walk together under the snow, to which she happily agrees. The two stare happily to each others and then start to walk. Their hands causally meet while walking, and they end walking hand in hand.
In this version, the entire set-up is really romantic. Moreover, it is beyond doubt that Lum's actions, including the Christmas gift she has made with her own hands, moved Ataru's heart to the point the boy is uncharacteristically kind to the Oni girl. The viewers are left knowing that something real is growing between the protagonists of the story. It is not by chance that this part of the episode remained in the memory of many, to the point it was shown as part of the fondest memories Ataru had about Lum in the fifth movie, the one adapting the final chapters of the manga. The only problem with this version is that Ataru appears to be in love with Lum, which is a bit too much for that moment of the story. It is still a beautiful romantic scene, though.

episode 5 of the new anime starts with very similar premises of the manga, but one important point: At the start of the episode, Lum saw a couple walking hand in hand and longed to do the same with Ataru. At the end, of the episode, after scolding him, she sees another couple in front of them who are holding their hands. She then looks at Ataru, but his attitude makes her realizing that's not going to happen between them, causing her to sigh and become slightly sad. As in the old anime, Ataru does not blurt his disappointment to be saved by her (it is the first time in this version) in Lum's face, but he mumbles it by himself instead. He then takes a look on her, and slowly realizes she is really attractive. He is still staring at her when she turns her head toward him, causing him to toss his head in the other direction. Lum says she will precede him at home and takes off. Ataru is taken by surprise and appears really worried, perhaps realizing he is losing the moment. He instinctively grabs Lum's hand, sporting a stupefied face, indicating he is not exactly knowing what he is going to do and why. She looks at him interrogatively, but says nothing. He then moves his face away from her, showing a bit of disappointment or incertitude. He then gently asks her to walk together a little bit. She happily accepts without saying a word, making him blushing and then diverting his sight from her again. They start to walk together, still hand in hand, with Lum being really happy and Ataru seemly disappointed.
This version has two great merits. Firstly, it introduces a meaning for the hand in hand walking that is deeper than being a cute romantic moment. It is something Lum wanted a lot, but, this time, did not pretend to obtain from her Darling. Importantly, she might have tried to force him to do that, even asking that in return of her favor, but she did not. She obtained it because her kindness moved Ataru's heart, and not because she forced him to do so. Thus, this represents an important element of change in her. Please note that this was only hinted in the other versions of the story,
Secondly, it provides a very good representation of Ataru's internal struggle. Some feelings for Lum are starting to emerge in him, but he does not know how to manage with them; he does not even fully understand what is happening to him. Part of him is still obviously restless toward her, something expected and realistic given the way she invaded his life, besides having been his enemy in the context for the fate of the Earth. Still, he subconsciously wants to be keep her close to him. Again it is a nice starting point for something that will require some time to be fully unfolded.

  5. 何でかはしらないんですよ。でもこのシーンを見た時に夏目友人帳を思い出したんですよ😳
