Chris Stapleton Maggie’s Song Lyrics Video.
According to Chris Stapleton via NPR:
“I wrote [Maggie’s Song] the day after our dog, Maggie, passed away. We had her for 14 years and I miss her quite a bit. I’m not really a dog person, either, that’s worth saying. But I loved that dog for sure. Every word of that song is just a true thing.”

[Verse]
Let me tell you a story
About an old friend of mine
Somebody left her in a shopping cart
In a parking lot for us to find
Just a fuzzy black pup
She was hungry and feeling alone
We put her in the back seat
And told her we were taking her home

[Chorus]
Run, Maggie run
With the heart of a rebel child
Oh, run, Maggie run
Be just as free as you are wild

[Verse]
A few kids later
We moved out on the farm
And she followed those kids around
Yeah, she kept them safe from harm
And she loved to chase squirrels
And playing out in the snow
She’d take off like a bullet
Man, you should have seen her go
[Chorus]
Run, Maggie run
With the heart of a rebel child
Oh, run, Maggie run
Be just as free as you are wild

[Verse]
It was raining on a Monday
The day that Maggie died
She woke up and couldn’t use her legs
So I laid down by her side
She put her head on my hand
Like she’d done so many times
I told her she was a good dog
Then I told her goodbye

[Chorus]
Run, Maggie run
With the heart of a rebel child
Oh, run, Maggie run
Be just as free as you are wild

[Verse]
I had a revelation
As the tractor dug a hole
I can tell you right now
That a dog has a soul
And I thought to myself
As we buried her on the hill
I never knew me a better dog
And I guess I never will
[Chorus]
Run, Maggie run
With the heart of a rebel child
Oh, run, Maggie run
Be just as free as you are wild
Oh, run, Maggie run
With the heart of a rebel child
Oh, run, Maggie run
Be just as free as you are wild

  1. We put our girl Honey to sleep over 3 weeks ago and it still doesn't feel real. She also lost use of her legs and we couldn't let her live in pain. She was a beautiful Miniature Schnauzer, very intelligent and as loyal as they come. I am just so lost without my best friend 😢 this song has helped my family find some peace <3 Dogs for sure have souls and they're much purer than our own.

  2. Oh so sorry the hardest thing ever. Just remember u had her and she loves u for taking her in. U gave her a loving home till she passed. What a wonderful person u were to take her in.

  3. To love is to be willing to have your heart broken as wide as the day

  4. Sweet song to celebrate all the loyal dogs we've known and loved. Tears for our life partners who've passed from our lives and left us to stumble on without their grace in our days. Thank you, Mr and Mrs Stapleton for your artistry and elegance expressing what so many feel in loss of our own Maggies.

  5. I love this song.I know it's about a dog named magny.I love it because I had a daughter named Maggie and she passed away when she was 17.And every time I go this sound that just reminds me of her

  7. When my last soul dog, Jesse passed away, I asked him to send me another dog because I didn't want to be sad. Within a week, I received an email from Petfinder showing me a beautiful girl. Her name was Megan Fox which was odd because a family member & I had been talking about a movie that night that MF was in. I applied for her on the spot through a Toronto rescue group. After a while I was approved and came to find out this beautiful girl would be coming from San Antonio, Texas. On a cold February day, we picked up this Mini Australian Shepherd/Great Pyrenees mix. I had a few names picked out to rename her and on the Sunday morning, she snuggled up beside me on my bed and SHE picked the name Maggie! She is the "girl" dog love of my life! I just discovered this song and it's so nicely written.
