Hey everyone, this is episode 24 of “She Loves to Cook, and She Loves to Eat.” In the last episode, our little couple Kasuga and Nomoto had their curry party with Nagumo and Yako. It was their first step in showing up as a couple in front of friends. Let’s see what kind of fun stories unfold now that they’re officially dating. It’s so wonderful it almost feels unreal. I felt the same way last episode. Their group chat is actually called “Curry Party.” Aw, that’s so sweet. You have so many cats at your place! Whoa, you bought a lot. Yeah, that does sound kinda weird. (Actually, beer with marshmallows is kind of like Nomoto with Kasuga.) Kasuga still does a little bow every time she says “Good night.” The image in Nomoto’s head is getting funnier and funnier. This is how creative cooking starts—with random bursts of inspiration. Their kitchen layout makes it so easy to stand across and demonstrate things to each other. Everyone brings something, and together it makes a perfect meal. Wow, she’s really good at grilling! It’s the first time I’ve heard Kasuga describe food like that. She really likes it. I mean really. Mhm, totally. Great! And soon, these two kind and lovely ladies will be moving out. You’ve got to hold your own, you know? Be strong, and hang in there! (Wait, what’s happening?) Oh? So this is your first love too? Yeah, and that’s more than enough. They maybe just want to cook and eat together, what more could they ask for? She’s mustering up the courage to finally go see a doctor. (Is that how it is?) Everyone is working hard in their own way. Oh wow, what are the odds? That’s such a coincidence! Oh, she still doesn’t know about Nagumo being sick? So at the party, Yako didn’t know about her fear of group meals? Oh, all she knew is that Nagumo wouldn’t eat. Yeah, you can’t help but feel self-conscious about it. And that she’s eating better, Nagumo won’t have to rely on microwave food all the time. Exactly! It’s such a simple concept— —but your brain still finds ways to overthink it. That’s great. Yako sees another girl growing up. She’s so proud. Life really works in mysterious ways. Yako and Nagumo just happened to run into each other at that coffee stand. It was the same day Nagumo went to see the doctor for the first time. And Yako’s thoughts have always been consistent. If Nagumo chooses not to eat, that’s her right. But if she wants to overcome that fear, that’s her choice too. As her friend, you just support her fully. It’s the same thing she told Nomoto last time—“Just be yourself.” This episode reminded me of Ghibli films. Hayao Miyazaki’s animations always have lots of scenes of people eating together. If you look closely, the food is always drawn in exquisite detail. Even the cooking process is carefully animated to stimulate your appetite. That’s definitely a reflection of the care put in by the animation team. Food speaks directly to our primal instincts as living beings. And eating is something that helps us relax. In Ghibli films, only those who share similar values can truly sit and enjoy a meal together. Those eating scenes also help ease the tension in otherwise intense storylines. So for someone like Nagumo, having difficulty with something as basic as eating really is quite heartbreaking. Yeah, it’s a bit sad. But I don’t think Nagumo wants pity from anyone. Which is why I totally get why she wants to work through this. Let’s wish her the best. Now that we know it *can* be treated— —let’s support her and move forward together.
