Maggie Smith’s most memorable roles

Maggie Smith, a multi-award-winning actor, whose decades-long career in film and TV saw her play roles which ranged from Minerva McGonagall in Harry Potter to Violet Crawley, Dowager Countess of Grantham, in Downton Abbey has died aged 89.

The news was confirmed by her sons Chris Larkin and Toby Stephens in a statement. They said: ‘She passed away peacefully in hospital early this morning, Friday 27 September’. Here is a look back at some of the most memorable moments in her career

  1. Pure class. The first time I saw her was in the film The V.I.P.s in which she played a secretary in love with her boss who was facing financial ruin; her portrayal of a woman who knew she was all but invisible to this man but continued to do everything to support him was superb.

  2. I also remember when she was in Keeping Mum; very odd but funny movie.

    Her performance in Hook was also memorable.

  3. Gosford Park is her best film, a whodunit period piece masterpiece directed by Altman and without that role they would be no Downtown Abby. Yet it is always overlooked.

  4. The longevity of her career, the awards she won, the acclaim she achieved. Few have had what this woman reached within her lifetime. An icon and legend of British acting…….
