Let me tell you a story
About an old friend of mine
Somebody left her in a shopping cart
In a parking lot for us to find
Just a fuzzy black pup
She was hungry and feeling alone
We put her in the back seat
And told her we were taking her home

Run maggie run
With the heart of a rebel child
Oh run maggie run
Be just as free as you are wild

  1. My Maggie passed 2014 , she was my best friend, still miss her and Belle and sweet Tater. They are all at the Rainbow bridge ❤ playing and waiting

  2. This is the sweetest song that really tugs at your heart. Makes me miss every dog I ever had. Chris has such a gift for saying what the human spirit feels. Thank you for all your beautiful songs .

  3. I can’t hardly listen to this song tears me up ! I had to put my Dog down after cancer came back her name was Sadie !! 😢

  4. Remembering my Miss Miesha today.
It's been a year since she had to go to Heaven. Only 6 years old. Lymphoma is not nice😢

  5. The first time I heard this song was the day after we let our Reggie cross the Rainbow Bridge. I had to pull over to the shoulder as I couldn't see through my tears.

  6. We just lost our 13 year old dog last June. Boy, could she run! It gave us so much joy just watching her. On the way home from Nashville a few weeks ago, we heard this song. We both cried because it reminded us so much of our sweet girl. We decided then that we needed another dog. Just before Christmas, we got another sweet one. We still miss Lexi, but this one is awesome too. Thank God for dogs.

  7. I had to put my gfs dog Eddy down some years ago. It was brutal. Watching this beautiful dog go see the Lord was the hardest thing I ever had to witness…loved him..😊

  8. ❤🥰 Beautiful tribute to our furbaby friends & family. So sad, when he talks about Maggie dying. I will never forget my sobbing broken heart as I had to put pets to sleep when the time came, and they still tryna comfort you thru all their suffereing 🙄 ….and they know, just like my sisters Rotty Rocky who also developed hip dysplasia which affects walking. Anyway, one day he went to lay by a tree. …sadly no one was there to hold his paw, rest his head on their laps cuz they didn't know he was dying at the time. I'm thinking too, he wanted to do it alone. Saving them hurt. I know, anthropomorphizing? Lol too bad! They are more in tune with their surroundings, and possessing an instinct to detect danger, or even knowing they or their young are in trouble, then we HUMAN ANIMALS could ever dream to be.

  9. I’m about to lose my 4 legged brother and my dad’s 4 legged son. Sarge on Tuesday you will finally meet him, you will finally be in paradise with all of the other animals. You’ll get to see Moe and become best friends with him, please tell that chubby cat how much I love him. I can’t believe it’s almost been 10 years. You’ve been the best dog I could have ever asked for and you have changed my life. You have so much life in you but your body can’t keep up with your soul. I pray God will take you peacefully but so far it seems like that is landing on our shoulders. I love you Sarge, I know you will be with me always. Run, Sargie, Run.

  10. I took my boy to the vet today to say goodbye. Before we went I laid on the floor with him and listened to this song.

  11. I’m living in Dallas Texas with my wife and we’re from Australia. We lost our beautiful Golden Retriever’Jazzy’ 4 days short of her 13th birthday 2 weeks ago. One of the hardest things I’ve ever done is call my daughter via messenger in a family group call while my eldest daughter hugged our Jazzy with every once of love we could muster as she went sleep as the Veterinarian helped her pass onto the next world. Our son was working that day so he missed the call and his chance to say goodbye. Jazzy was part of our family, I am still in shock and she will always have a place on our heart. I miss her so much already. ❤

  12. I’m crying, first time I have heard this song😢but I have been there ,Chris I love your music

  13. What a beautiful song. We just switched the name to Holly. Run,Holly,Run. Be as free as you are wild. Thank you Chris Stapleton.

  14. Miranda Lambert's voice adds something to the song, but at the same time its so personal a subject it almost feels like an imposition for her to be there.
That must have been a hard choice to make.

  15. Run Tazzy run

With the heart of a rebel child

    Oh run Tazzy run

Be just as free as you are wild

Tazz was a15yr old Blue Heeler, had to let him go a couple months ago. Dug a deep hole, out in the yard where he always used to lay. Bundled him up in his blanket with his favorite things. Alway's teased him, down deep, he was a really good boy. After I filled in his grave, I stood over him and started to sing with eyes filled with tears

Ash's to ash's, dust into dust

Kingdom's will crumble, bridges will rust

Mountains will disappear, rivers will dry up

And so it goes, with everything but love

And so it goes. (John Denver & the NGDB)

Just as I got out ash's to ash's, I caught a glimpse of movement in the sky right above, a big Bald Eagle floated over. 🦅
Your rides here old buddy, see ya later. I'm totally convinced that dogs have a soul. Thanks Chris. Mitakuye Oyasin (All Are Related) 🪶

  16. I could tell you about an ole friend of mine. … and o did she follow our kids around!….I never was a dog person but we had a lab named Maggie. And I could sit out on 😢the porch and she’d be right there with me. And boy did she love my kids! And definitely when I had to get on the tractor to dig the hole, the dog sure has a soul! RIP Maggie girl…….. Run Maggie Run😢

  17. Had no idea what this song was about. Just had a lab that had same issue one day just lost use of her legs. We had her for 11 years and I had a hard time with having to put her down. RIP Zoe!

  18. I split with my girl after 8 years. We had a dog together who I don’t get to see her anymore. I think about that dog all the time and how much love and joy the three of us shared together.

  19. RIP Duke 8/23/24 I got Duke when he was 18 months old, and he rode the highways with me for 6yrs until he retired and lived a peaceful life for his remaining years, and I'll miss him so much. He was the greatest pup there ever was. You'll be missed so much Duke. This is such a beautiful song for all of the fur babies we've lost.

  20. Dan and I have #7 and #8 cocker spaniels, we are in our 70's and maybe it's selfish to have 2 young dogs, all eight are the pieces of my heart and soul. Every dog has a soul and gives humans more than love and compassion. There is joy. There is unbearable grief. And there are memories identical to reading poetry.
